i forgot to add that i love the relationship between herschel and rick. herschel is awesome. he heals people, he's folksy and looks like santa claus. and now he's dead. Good 'ol Herschel. They make the older, wiser characters quite likable on this series, and then kill them. Sigh. You're rolling along, spice

here it is, #4. turned out great. the guy that did it is starting his own shop, though he's had 4 years experience as an artist. i reviewed his past work and read reviews, so agreed to give him a chance. my bff from barrow got the same one. he was a little heavy handed with the gun - it hurt more than the other ones i have gotten, but it's healing nicely.

we saw the opening for the iditarod today - many dog sled teams from all over the country were there. it's been such a mild winter they had to cart 7 train cars of snow in for it to downtown anchorage. the best part was the booties all the dogs wore.

That's awesome. You may have been shown in the background on the news stories of this. What's the story on the guy who ran into two of the sleds and killed some dogs? Was he drunk or something?

yes, the as$hole was drunk. it was horrible. i was already on the fence about the whole thing because i've read about how hard this is on the dogs - many have died over the years. their hearts just give out because it's so stressful on them - they get ulcers in their stomachs, they get dehydrated, etc. it's better now that vets are available at all checkpoints, and the dogs can't race until they pass a physical.
apparently the guy was loaded and came out of nowhere and mowed into a team and then got them again. one dog died and a couple of others were injured. the guy at least did turn himself in, but i don't know what's happening with the case now. i assume he's out on bail. i don't know the amount, but i heard when it was set the judge over the hearing said he would have agreed to just about any amount no matter how high it was.
i feel the same way i did when i went to the site where the whales were slaughtered last fall - i'm more on the side of the mammals. but these are traditions that have gone on for decades and centuries. these dogs are bred for this race - their whole lives revolve around it. all the ones i saw were terribly excited to race. and again, those booties. they just killed me with their cuteness.

this is the chukchi sea - all frozen over. it's kind of hard to tell where the ocean begins. it was too cold to get a better picture. but i'll try to get another one the next time i go to a co-worker's apartment - she lives right on the ocean. that sounds great if you live on the kind of beach where you can go out and drink a mai tai on the sand, but not so much here. it's basically an entry way for the polar bears. but it looks really pretty if you can get a good shot of it, which i did not do here.
