So... this is happening... I've never before participated in a Kickstarter, and there've been a few things I truly wanted to participate in. But for this? Yes... yes, I think I will... -EDIT- Wow... as of the time I posted that, only one of the $1000 backing rewards were left. These people really want Twilight to be Riff'd. (Plus... those are awesome rewards. I think I'll stick closer to the twenty dollar level personally... more affordable for me.) -FURTHER EDIT- And in less than two hours they have met and surpassed their goal. I knew that the Internet wouldn't let this slide... I think it's still a good idea to contribute, though. For the next twenty-nine days, the more cash they can bring to the negotiating table, the more likely that they'll be able to convince whatever people they're talking to about the rights to the broadcast.

That was amazingly quick. I'm very glad to be a part of it!

Right now they're at $150,000. That's insane. Looks like a lot of people want Twilight to get punted live.
It would be funny if they made enough money to do the entire series.

I might actually be able to handle a Twilight riff if I were in an audience full of like-minded people. And also a bit drunk. On my own I couldn't make it through.

My sympathies. I think the first Twilight movie is their best work (though I've not heard the later Twilight Riffs yet). I can understand how even with their help the movie might not be tolerable, though.
Still, in a crowd of friendly strangers eager to see the movie torn asunder, I think you're right that it might be easier still.

I wonder how many fangirls would wander in, never having heard of Rifftrax, thinking it's just a screening of "the best movie EVER!" Imagine the nightmare of half MSTies and half-TwiHards.
I envision riots breaking out and thousands dead. Mike releases a statement the following day saying "It seemed like a good idea at the time."

It'll be time to whip out the old Twilight Board if they pull this thing off. I'll be squealing with the fangirls! Just maybe not at the same times.
I kicked $20 toward this. Money is tighter but the digital download of it is a great prize.

You'll have to pardon me for playing devil's advocate here, but I have to be honest: this strikes me as disreputable and I have to express disappointment in Mike and company for going this route. The whole thing sounds to me like, "Hey, Bill! Hey, Kevin! I've found the money tree! Let's shake this bitch!"
I don't know a whole lot about this Kickstarter / Indiegogo phenomenon. The examples I've heard from it are ridiculous, and the system strikes me as a means of generating consequence-free money without being obligated to fulfill a return on your proposed product.
I could respect the system a little as a means of giving a KICK START to talented individuals that lack the credit and the finances to make their aspirations a reality. That is not the case I see here. RiffTrax is a company that generates revenues.
I am not against helping people out, but I prefer to get something for my money. When I was a CAD draftsman, I enjoyed a nice income. I said to myself, "I'm in a good mood. I've got a good job. I've got a fair amount of money. I can see that some of these artists online would like some commission work. I'll order a commission from them." What they do with the money is their own business so long as I get the product I was promised. My view is that, if RiffTrax wants to do a special event that requires licensing Twilight, they should budget the cost into their revenues. Furthermore, the video stated that, even if they generate the money, they might not be able to license the movie. Thus, they haven't even hammered out a deal yet.
Anyways, that's just my humble opinion. I probably have a limited perspective on the issue and would probably appreciate if other board members could correct any misconceptions I have about this issue. Thank you.

I'm actually inclined to agree with Mad Plumber on this one. I could respect the system a little as a means of giving a KICK START to talented individuals that lack the credit and the finances to make their aspirations a reality. A big part of the problem here is that Sturgeon's Law seems to have hit Kickstarter and its rivals- most of the people looking to raise money via those sites seem to me to be either people looking to make off with others' money, or established creators/entities that could easily get whatever funds they may need via more traditional means.

Rifftrax indicates that money raised will be spent on the show one way or another. Either by getting a movie they typically couldn't afford, improving production values, or bringing in guest talent that would be above their means without the additional funding. On this basis, I have no problem.
I bumped my donation up a tad to get the new shorts (including a new Mr. B Natural).

Considering the success of a Kickstarter in funding the restoration of "Manos", the blanket dismissal of it as "ridiculous" is ridiculous itself.

Project Update #6: MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT: WE HAVE A TITLE! Posted by RiffTrax: Mike, Bill & Kevin Like Greetings loyal Kickstarter backers and/or confused spouses who share email addresses with our loyal Kickstarter backers!
Let’s cut to the chase: we have bad news and we have great news. The bad news? We were unable to secure the rights to Twilight for our live show. (Remember, we have great news in just a paragraph or two, so don’t break out the pitchforks just yet.) We had long talks with the folks at Summit, who turned out to be very nice people and not Volturi-like in the slightest. They understood what we wanted to do and didn’t object to the idea. They just felt that the Twilight series is still very much a going concern for them, i.e. something that’s still going to earn them millions and millions more dollars, and it didn’t make sense to let a few guys crack jokes on top of it - at least not this summer. They’re probably right, dag nabbit, and they did leave the door open for us riffing Twilight in the future.
We knew this was a risk going in, which is why we were simultaneously talking with other studios about backup plans. Which brings us to the great news. We have acquired the rights to another movie for the August live show and it’s a darn good Plan B. Heck, it’s not even really a Plan B, we consider it more of a Plan A-1.5, Subsection C. For our August live show we will be riffing...
STARSHIP TROOPERS.
We’re excited about this for a number of reasons: It’s big. It’s goofy. It’s got giant bug aliens. Folks have been asking us to do this movie ever since we riffed excerpts of it on the 1998 MST3K Blockbuster Special. And IT’S FREAKING STARSHIP TROOPERS! It’s basically a cheesy 50s sci-fi flick, the kind we know and “love”, but made in 1997 with a massive Hollywood budget! NEIL PATRICK HARRIS as a psychic who talks to giant bugs! DENISE RICHARDS as a brilliant starship pilot, before she was a brilliant nuclear scientist in that Bond movie! MICHAEL IRONSIDE, because it’s a war movie, so of course Michael Ironside! JAKE BUSEY, hanging out and making it weird! This movie’s got it all!
Getting Starship Troopers is especially exciting because it’s owned by Sony. Thanks to you guys, we now have a relationship with a great big studio, which we’re incredibly excited about going forward, because of the fantastic potential. They’ve got shelves and shelves of fun, famous movies we’d love to sink our teeth into, and we can’t wait to see what doors this opens in the future. And we couldn’t have done it without you.

Boy that's a letdown.
I mean this might be a great one to do, could be hilarious. But for all the money they raised... and this is the movie they get? It's like paying for filet mignon and getting Del Taco instead.
And I wonder what studios think of Rifftrax? If they don't want it done in theaters, how do they feel about the downloaded tracks? And would there be anything they could do to leagally precvent them from doing them?

I'm glad they opened relations with Sony. Maybe there's a chance they could do the 1998 American Godzilla. I'd love to see them rip apart that turd.
