Van Cliburn, who won the 1958 International Tchaikovsky Competition, in Moscow died Wednesday at the age of 78 from bone cancer. After winning the Tchaikovsky Competition Cliburn played to adoring crowds both in the United States and Russia, and became an musical ambassador between two superpowers. Cliburn retired in 1978 but returned to concerts in 1989, but, he was not the same performer.
