I'm blogged in. First I'll get this out of the way. There. I know how popular that picture is. I have grand plans for this glob blog. I plan to make wild-eyed rants and splatter opinions all over the walls and let them drip to the floor. And I'm not cleaning it up. But I have to gather my thoughts before I get started so be sure and check back. I promise, you will be disappointed.

OK, here ya go. I can't stand prog rock. I know prog is short for progressive but to me prog has become a word unto itself. I mean I would call The Beatles progressive because over their career they changed and, uh, progressed but I would never call them prog. To me one of the main attributes of prog (besides pretentiousness) is musically complex for the sake of complexity. At work I listen a lot to SiriusXM Deep Tracks station and one of my (many) issues with them is, boy howdy do they love their prog. I would like to live in a prog free world.

You can send all the prog to me. I'll take it. I just love pretentiousness. Heck, recently I listened to Jethro Tull's "A Passion Play" & Yes' "Tales From Topographic Oceans." Insane? Maybe. Deaf? Probably. Irritated most of people that was around at the time? Definitely! At least I didn't share a video....

Wow, you start your blog off with a picture of a donkey and a profession of your dislike for prog music? I'm still waiting to be disappointed. Incidentally, when I played in a darts league in college, there was a bartender where we played who would pump about $15 into the jukebox before anyone from league showed up. He would load it up with nothing but Yes tracks. Prog has its place, I suppose, and I'd be lying if I said I hated every prog band and track I ever heard. But four hours of Yes is not what I want to hear when I'm trying to get drunk and play darts at the bar on a Friday night.

But I have to gather my thoughts before I get started so be sure and check back. Well, that is a popular approach, but I always favoured the "make the post, let Dog sort it out" school. So, are you figuring on musical themes particularly or just whatever strikes you?

There will be a lot of arrogant musical opinion but I can be narrow minded on other topics as well. Wow, you have suffered. 4 hours of just about any group/artist can be painful. Ever try to play a 4 CD group/musician/artist box set at once? Halfway through the second disc I usually start thinking that maybe I should listen to something else.

That's why you should call a doctor for an erection lasting longer than 4 hours.

i've never been positive what prog rock actually is. there's a lot of crap out there, musically speaking, but i like almost all types of music to some point - except for country, unfortunately. i mainly listen to classic rock (even though i'm sick to death of it, but that is all there is around here) when i'm in the car. i haven't kept up with rock much since my beloved pearl jam's heyday. at home i stick with jazz, blues, classical and world stuff - irish, middle eastern, etc. hell, i'll listen to rap sometimes in small doses, but only beastie boys, usually. i find it incredible that i still do, but i also find it amazing that i even like opera. what kind of rock is it where they just scream - literally, just screeeeeeeeam into the mics like insane people? i draw the line there. but i'll listen to anything, even if it is only one time. and abominations like sirius is killing small radio stations. even so, i know if i didn't work for one, i'd probably be a customer. and phantom is blogging. my, my.

That's right baby, I'm bloggin' up the ying yang. You made several points I would like to address spicy. Satellite radio is not killing small stations. That first blow started I believe during the Bush administration when the rules were changed allowing corporations to own more stations in a given market. That helped radio to become more corporated and homogenized and squeezed out a lot of small stations. But I can't listen to commercial radio anymore because of, well commercials. And even though I am of the classic rock generation there is just so much of it I will not tolerate. There just isn't a commercial radio format that I can take, SiriusXM comes a little closer but I could go on with complaints about that to, and later probably will. I'll continue with musical comments with you later spicy. I need breakfast.
