Is it just me or has volume of the movie audio track been lowered on many Rhino & Shout Factory discs? I just received Shout's vol XXVII set and when I checked out the SLIME PEOPLE disc I find that I can hear Joel & the bots just fine but the movie's audio is so low that I have to strain to hear it! So, if I raise the TV's volume to hear what's being riffed on, then the riffs BLAST ME OUT OF MY CHAIR!!!!! And this isn't something new. Going way back, Rhino's release of #204 CATALINA CAPER has the same problem. Riffs: clearly audible. Movie audio: very low. This also occurs on other discs (sorry don't have detailed list of which eps at moment). Is this a conscious choice made by Rhino & Shout? Or is is a quality control issue?

Whoa dude, don't get carried away and spam your own thread! I'm sure someone will reply eventually.
Although I do think this topic would be more fitting in the General MST3K section rather than News. Maybe if you asked a mod/admin to move it there, it could get better exposure.
On the topic, I don't think I've ever really had this sort of audio problem, so I can't say.

Wish I had seen this earlier, cripsyglennmanning. I would have answered if I wasn't hunkered down for the day. Or if I payed a bit more attention to the top of the board. I have the same issue with the DVDs sound. The DVD menus seem to blast, like Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, then I turn it down a bit only to not be able to hear the movie. Then it's a constant battle of up & down issues with the volume. I've always assumed it was an issue with the bad negative quality of most of the movies they used because I seem to remember having the same issue when the shows were originally broadcast.

Thanks, Lobo. Hmmm... I'm going to have to compare my broadcast discs with the official discs. I don't remember ever having this problem with fan copies or my own transfers. At one point I thought it might be that, in mastering the discs, a decision was made to lower the film audio so one could hear the riffs more clearly. Not good, IMO, if that was the thinking.

I will say that compared to other dvds that I watch on my TV, MST3K has really bad volume problems with theater segments. Now, this could just be a problem with my TV, as my old one never suffered from these problems. Stiil, this morning, I watched an Adventure Time dvd at 10 volume. I'm lucky if I can even hear MST3K episodes at 20, usually I have it turned up to 50 or above. However, I really do not mind this, but I thought I would share my experience.

Thanks, crawlinghand. But what I'm talking about is in the theater segments you can hear J or M&TB just fine but the actual movie's volume is REALLY LOW. So you can hear the riffs quite clearly while one has to strain to hear the movie--or, if you turn up the volume so's you can hear the movie comfortably, then our favorite riffers will shout you out of your chair--it's waaaayyy out of balance.. This has to either occur by choice when mastering the DVD audio or it's some kind of quality control issue because broadcast copies do not have this problem.

I don't think Shout Factory could change one individual aspect of the the sound like raising the riffing and/or lowering the movie audio because they don't have the original separate audio elements that would be necessary in order to remix the track.
I honestly have never noticed a difference between the DVD's and the broadcast versions. I've certainly noticed volume issues at times between the riffing and the movie audio, but for me that's as much an issue with my broadcast copies as the DVD's.
