Have started early this year. Gonna try to watch one or two every weekend. So far: "An American Werewolf In London." Still love this great horror-comedy. Still in love with Jenny Agutter--but not as much as I love Mrs. Shep of course "The Wicker Man: Extended Version." 70s version, of course. Not quite as good as I remembered, but a lot of fun nonetheless. The music is amazing. Still to come--stuff from John Carpenter, Dario Argento, and whatever's being shown on British TV.

American Werewolf is such a fun, yet depressing, love story, and Jenny Agutter is a dream in that movie. Whenever something disappointing happens to me that's completely unexpected, I always think of the boy saying "A naked American man stole my balloons."
I always get way too ambitious with October horror movies, and this year is no exception. Right now, I've got more movies than days left before Halloween.
Since I'd been watching a lot of English tv shows lately, I started out the season with 28 Days later. Like the shows, It's a shame they had no budget for 35mm film, because I love everything about it but the video quality. After that, I went with the Fog and Halloween, two more of my favorites.
Right now, I'm finishing up Alien. I complained about this movie last year, and I'm finding it on par with MST3K fodder right now. The direction/set design are great, and the actors are excellent, but the rest is so stupid. Between the weak creature effects, the stupid cat, and insane logic of the story, I think this might be the last I watch this one for a long time. When Tom Skerritt's character dies, I was laughing hysterically. It looks like the alien just desperately wants a hug.
I'll probably keep up the theme of space ship horror tonight, and watch Event Horizon. It has its own problems, but I love the psychological horror. It always manages to freak me out.

So far I kicked it off with The Monster Squad, a true classic.

"The Fog." Probably my least favorite of John Carpenter's early films, but certainly has some good moments/scares. The ending absolutely terrified me as a kid.
"Phenomena." Surreal, beautiful and completely bonkers. A must-see for horror fans. Probably Dario Argento's last truly great film.

"Night of Dark Shadows." A mess in it's current, butchered state, though there's still some spooky atmosphere at times. I'd rate the existing film a D (Sam Hall's original script is a B/B-). Am still hopeful we'll see a restored version some day.

Watched two 1950's classics last night.
The Thing from another world from 1951. A must watch for the Halloween season.
And
It! The terror from beyond space from 1958. This is the movie that 21 years later would be "unofficially" remade as ALIEN.

Started the month with all the Jamie Lee Curtis movies.
Halloween. Still one of the best. Jamie is baby sitter Laurie Strode, who is stalked by the boogeyman, Michael Myers. Scary and there's hardly any gore at all.
Halloween II. The more violent sequel and more of "The night HE came home". Laurie is taken to the hospital and Michael comes to finish what he started. More gore, but not a bad flick.
Prom Night. Much better than the 2009 reboot. Jamie is planning on going to prom with her boyfriend and all her friends, although her friends have a secret that will get them killed. With Leslie Nielsen.
Terror Train. A college prank goes wrong, putting freshman pledge Kenny Hampson in the hospital. Four years later the seniors, celebrating graduation rent a train to have the party to end all parties. Unfortunately for them, Kenny has crashed the party and he's out for revenge.
The Fog. Already been mentioned but it's a pretty good ghost story. Has some really good scares in it, and the ghost sailors are creepy.
Halloween H2O: Twenty Years Later. Laurie has changed her name, moved to California, and now has a teenage son. Bad for her, but her brother Michael has found her and coming out west. Has some great lines and some good scares too.

As per usual I keep it on AMC's Fear Fest when I'm just sitting around the house doing nothing. They always put together a good mix of movies to get you in the spirit. So far I've caught significant portions of Friday the 13th 4 and 5, Stephen King's Silver Bullet (a true guilty pleasure of mine), and Cujo.
Late at night they played a true hidden gem, Graveyard Shift. Not sure how many people have seen this one, but I've been a fan since I caught it on video in the early 90s. Based on an excellent Stephen King short story, it's about a decrepit old textile mill that's infested with rats (and something much worse). It oozes disgusting, sweaty atmosphere and has some great hammy yet affecting performances. I never get tired of revisiting this movie's horrid universe, and I encourage others to take a look (if they have the stomach for it).

I might do the Ring (US version), I've been thinking of picking up the BD.
Criterion released "Eyes Without a Face" - I haven't seen that in years (last time was on the big screen at the Belcourt in Nashville), that could be a goodie to revisit.
