Yesterday morning for breakfast I made scrambled eggs with two cheeses: havarti with jalapenos, and pepper jack. Came out really tasty.

I've been a picky eater ever since I can remember and at age 61 I doubt if I'll ever outgrow it. Among the things I do not eat are eggs with runny yolks (those yolks have to be COOKED for me to eat them), anything with lettuce, anything with onions, anything with tomatoes other than ketchup and pizza sauce (preferably with no big chunks), anything with chunks of fat (bacon is fine as long as it's crispy and not chewy and steak or pork chops have to have every bit of fat trimmed off because if I get fat in my mouth it makes me gag), anything with mushrooms, and anything with barbecue sauce. The smell alone of barbecue sauce makes me queasy. Also pineapple, strawberries, bananas with any brown on the peel, dark meat turkey or chicken, mashed or boiled or fried potatoes, venison other than ring bologna or summer sausage, anything heavy on garlic or other spices, peppers, any salad, macaroni and cheese (although I do like the more adult fettuccine alfredo version, especially with chicken), Jello with fruit in it, and many, many, other things. You probably get the picture by now. Some things just do not agree with me and that's why I don't eat them and some things I just don't understand. For instance, why does anybody want to ruin a perfectly good burger by piling a salad on top of it? I want to taste the meat and not some of the toppings I see offered. And seeing a burger with a runny yolk egg on top turns my stomach. Personally, my favorite burger has cheese, bacon, and mayo on it. Had one like that from Five Guys just last week. For some reason pizza sauce does not bother me, unless it has big chunks of tomato in it, but spaghetti or marinara sauce can cause very, shall we say, uncomfortable...aftereffects. I like pizza, but pretty much only plain cheese or sausage. I used to be able to eat pepperoni, but it no longer agrees with me. And I like steak, preferably ribeye, but it has to be at least cooked medium. Pink is great, bloody is not. When I was a kid my Mom once tried to pass off liver and onions as steak. Didn't work. Add that to the list of food I don't touch.

I made another thing with the havarti with jalapenos and pepperjack cheeses: Grilled cheese. I sandwiched some sliced pieces of those cheeses in between two slices of American cheese on the toast, I also added a slice of salami and some slices of pepperoni. Grilled cheese with a little extra kick.

I went to London in 2012 for the Olympics, so I had some stuff there that I liked. The obligatory fish and chips of course. It was at a sort of banquet in a pub that they gave the group I was with, so it was buffet style and sitting around. It was okay, but I'm sure if it was fresher it would've been better.
I tried a steak Cornish pasty. I bought it at a grocery store and made it in the little apartment I was staying in - just had to heat it up, it was already made. It was very tasty.
But the best thing I had was Yorkshire Pudding with roast beef (with a side of roast potatoes and green beans). OMG. That was delicious. I was on a bus tour to Stonehenge and we stopped in Salisbury at the Salisbury Cathedral where a copy of the Magna Carta is. They had a little cafe, and I ate it there of all places, and, oh my, it was good. So good I had to try it again another day at a pub when I was just walking around town. It was actually better at the Cathedral cafe than the pub.
(Wish we had spent more time in the town of Salisbury to look around at the little shops and such, it is adorable - think Diagon Alley from Harry Potter, with cobblestone streets and old lampposts and buildings that are a few centuries old).

Back in the 90s I baked cinnamon rolls from scratch a few times. Don't remember what recipe I used. I would bake a dozen in a round foil pan, frost them, and slide the pans into a Ziploc bag and give most of them away. That was before the Great Cookie Baking Orgy became a "thing". I gave a pan once to a former coworker and he insisted I bought them and didn't make them. I guess that was a compliment.
The Great Cookie Baking Orgy was cancelled last year because of COVID. Still debating on it for this year. Might do a more mini orgy.

Ben and Jerry's Cookie Dough ice cream helped get me through the side effects of my second shot in June, which was not fun for two days. If I end up getting a booster I will probably need to get another pint or two.

I had bought some skinless, boneless chicken thighs to make the dish I wrote about a few posts back - the one with chicken, potatoes and carrots. So I had a package left over as I didn't use them all for that dish. I marinated the chicken in some olive oil, red cider vinegar and a horseradish mustard that I'd had left from a dip for onion rings, and also a little salt and pepper. I let it marinade for a few hours then just baked it. It came out pretty good. No overpowering flavor, just a nice little something.
But the best part was that I had a piece of chicken left for another day and I just reheated it in a skillet and topped it with mozzarella. Mmm. I made a sandwich with it, I somewhat toasted the bread - I let it sit in the toaster just until the bread was warm and a little crusty, still white, not browned. Nice sandwich. I should make more like that I really enjoyed it.

For Thanksgiving it was just me with my Dad. Our menu was baked ham (I got a roughly 13-pound Smithfield bone-in shank ham with a gift card essentially for free, and although it tasted really good there was a LOT of fat on it, even too much for Dad and he doesn't have the aversion to fat that I do, documented a few posts above), mashed sweet potatoes, buttermilk biscuits, corn, cranberry salad, and pumpkin pie with whipped cream. The way we have always made cranberry salad is to put cranberries and marshmallows through the food grinder, add some sugar, and then mix with a tub of Cool Whip. None of us liked nuts or pineapple in it. When I was a kid my job was to whip up an envelope of Dream Whip to mix with it but we switched to Cool Whip a few decades ago. At least with Cool Whip we can freeze the leftovers. We are going to my brother's house for Christmas and the leftover salad might come with us. For the pie we had whipped cream in a can.

I made something once when I was just throwing things together. I browned steak in a frying pan and I can't remember now what kind of steak I originally used, I've made it a couple of times since and it just wasn't the same, it came out great the first time. Maybe flank steak? I don't know, it was kind of a cheap cut that when you cook for a long time on low heat gets tender. Anyway, after I browned it, I drained the pan, then added potatoes and yellow and orange peppers (sweet peppers) and covered it all in tomato sauce, then covered the pan and cooked it for about an hour, flipping the steak over once and stirring the sauce occasionally. Dee-lish. I tried this again. It came out pretty damn good, if I do say so myself. I got steak at Costco - it was labeled "Beef Loin Flap Steak." That's a mouthful. I'd never heard of flap steak. It was a cheaper cut, relatively speaking. (Less than the other stuff they had, which were all in the $50, $60, $70 dollar range - sheesh. Price gauging at it's finest). The meat was not quite a big slab of steak, not quite strips, it was cut a little wider than strips. Anyway, I should've divided the meat up, since it's Costco, there was a lot of it, but I made it all at once. That's okay. I can do leftovers. I browned the steak, searing it on all sides (even the sides). I seasoned it with salt and pepper and a little dash of onion powder and garlic powder. After that I drained the excess grease out and cut it up into smaller bits. Then I added peppers (one yellow, one orange, one red) - just cut them into long strips and took out the meaty white part with the seeds - and some Maine gold potatoes. I just washed them and chopped them into chunks, I didn't peel them. I covered them with slightly watered down jarred sauce and added a little more salt, pepper, onion and garlic. I put it on high heat until it started bubbling, then stirred it, lowered the heat and covered it. Cooked it for about an hour and ten minutes, stirring every ten or so. Tasted great.  Here's the leftovers.  Edit: Also made brownies today (boxed - Ghirardelli). Yum. Dessert.

I really hate when places serve you steak that is too thick. It gets overcooked on the outside and is raw on the inside (and is pretty tough). Even if you ask them to cook it more, the outside is already ruined and the inside still never gets quite cooked enough.
Went to a wedding today and could only eat around the outside edge of the steak I got. Blech.
