Every once in a while, the riffing does get a bit mean for my taste. Part of this is characterization on the part of who says what joke, but that was sort of a self-built issue since the jokes reportedly came first in the writing room before they decided which character should say them. Is Crow snarky and cantankerous naturally, or did he grow that way from getting more snarky and cantankerous jokes given to him?
I had more problems with this in Rifftrax, though. I watched a couple of their Star Trek trax, and while I generally enjoyed them I thought a few of the remarks made toward individual actors (not their characters) were just a bit too mean spirited for my taste. Still, the writers at least seem to be a bit aware of this element of their humor; during the live showing of Birdemic, they took a moment to acknowledge the fact that there was apparently a gathering of the people who made Birdemic all watching their live Riffing of it. They apologized to them for some of the things they were about to say... before immediately saying something like "But really, you brought it on yourselves by making Birdemic."

Do you mean riffs that are too harsh on the movie itself, or harsh on the person or thing being referenced in the riff? (E.g. the "Awww...Ricky! It turns out I was never really funny!" line Crow makes about Lucille Ball in one episode.) That was in Jungle Goddess.

Well, Crow started out as sort of naive and child-like, but started becoming more and more sarcastic in Season 2, and by Season 4 he'd become a full-on neurotic drama queen, so it seems natural that he'd be extra snarky in the theater. Perhaps it's just my taste, having grown up on George Carlin, Richard Pryor, National Lampoon and the original SNL, but as far as harsh humor goes, the sky's pretty much the limit for me. The more savagely they tear into a movie, the more I like it.
...and yeah, they did bring it on themselves by foisting such rotten-ass movies off on the viewing public.

I can't help but feel that Crow's snarkiness reached its zenith when Bill took over as his performer since Bill is very much that way by nature anyway.

Funny that people whine about some of the riffing being "too harsh." Not surprising in the 21st century when thin-skinned people have decided some things are off-limits for ridicule, because coping skills have died off in younger generations since the 80's and 90's. People make fun of things every day in this world. Deal with it. Just as French surrender stereotypes don't come from thin air, neither do Japanese stereotypes. Or German stereotypes. Or even American stereotypes. Nothing is off-limits when it come to ridicule. I don't like the fact that the more you watch MST3K, and I've been watching them since I discovered them in 1989, there are things that I don't like about the show. They continually make sure, extremely subtly, that you know their worldview is decidedly Liberal. They never miss a chance to poke fun at God, or religion in general. Do these riffs irritate me? Yes. Do I complain about it? No. Does it make their work any less funny? No. They savage the Japanese in both "Prince of Space," and "Invasion of the Neptune Men." And Japan has it coming. They were involved in starting a world war that cost millions of lives, and they have never said they were sorry. They are just hacked because they lost. They deserve any ridicule they receive. Their problem, not mine, since their poor behavior resulted in the problem in the first place.

I don't know why you're posting here, you can go on Twitter and tweet right at Mike Nelson and tell him all about how his writing subtly betrays his obvious liberal bias.

If it's taken to a ridiculous extreme and not explained properly, comments can be absolutely taken too far.
Liberal worldview-This is not representative of the series as a whole. The members who would go o to create Cinematic Titanic are liberals. The Rifftrax crew are so conservative that their heartbeats play "Peter was a Fireball". And that's why I find Rifftrax to be the most oppressive project to come out of MST3K. I get so tired of their riffs about having an interest in musical theater automatically makes you gay and oh dear God, their rage boner for Arby's comes dangerously close to a complex.

i recommend creating a 'Cranky Pants Boomer' page for this type of thing. cobalt1959, would you please? Cobalt isn't necessarily a boomer. There are plenty of young people who believe the foolishness of a golden age where THOSE PEOPLE knew their place and never complained. And on the rare occasion when THOSE PEOPLE did complain the right minded people in town beat the crap out of them or killed them and they learned to stop complaining. What they don't seem to get is that what they call Political Correctness has always been around. It used to be called Common Courtesy. In the old days, people might think awful things but you didn't say them in polite society. People who just went around insulting everyone were not allowed in polite society even if a lot of people agreed with them. They realized that most people in the world really didn't hate THOSE PEOPLE as much as they did and it was better to keep the hate quiet.

Bill is very liberal, and Kevin has described his politics as being closer to Bill’s than Mike’s. Mike is the only conservative of the three (if you count Mary Jo and Bridget they split evenly between left and right). I can’t speak to the politics of writers Conor and Sean.
