normally, i love winter; it's my favorite time of year. but this is some serious weather. it's supposed to get down to about -8 in tennessee tonight, but i know that is mild compared to other parts of the country. right now it's snowing like crazy, but we aren't supposed to get much in accumulation.
what's in yer forecast?

It was -17 when I left for work this morning a bit before 9 a.m. Around a 28 mph wind is giving us somewhere in the neighborhood of -50 or -60 wind chill. No snowfall. Most schools called off today, which is weird as the skies are clear and so are the roads. Usually schools only close around here for visibility/snow accumulation reasons, but the cold has them all scared today. Don't want kids waiting for the bus in these temps. Better safe than sorry.
In all honesty, it was -10 a few weeks ago when I left for work, so this is cold, but it's not that bad. Just a few years ago it his -25 overnight twice in the span of three weeks and nobody said anything about it. Nobody cares until it starts to encroach on the east coast. Then national news treats it like nobody has even heard of sub-zero temperatures.
I wish I didn't have to deal with work today, but those are the breaks. Good day to stay indoors.

It was -15 this morning when I went to work. Coming home it was only -11. Glad I got a new car battery before the new year. Our high tomorrow is supposed to be 0. A heat wave.

Just here, strummin' my old gee-tar in this dark room, singin' the polar vortex blues... i agree with mod - the media has blown this into a monster. it is unusual for us to have temps this cold, but it isn't as if it hasn't happened before (i believe it was '85 for the last time). it's 9 degrees here, with a wind chill of -8. but when you get to a certain temperature, does it even matter what it is? cold is freaking cold.

To be fair, when I say "it's not so bad," it means that winter has once again broken me and I find it impossible to care anymore

Ahem...I hate to join weather talk because, well, you know? We've had a number of lightning storms over the last two weeks with electricity going off quite often. Last Monday we had +13" of rain in a 24hr period. Temperatures have been hanging around 65 during the day and going down to the mid to high 50's at night. Volcano hit a low of 43 this morning; remember Hawai'i houses have no central heating, just small fire places, so if it's 43 outside, it's 43 inside, if not colder. My room was a refrigerator this morning. We have high winds from 20-45mph going until 6pm tomorrow which now adds a nice wind chill to my refrigerated room. The electricity has been having fits today. It's gone off five times so far.
Still, it's nothing compared to the freeze you're having over there.

With the wind chill we are in the teens. I can't remember the last time that happened. But I also can't remember where my heavy coat is. Where is it?

With the wind chill we are in the teens. I can't remember the last time that happened. But I also can't remember where my heavy coat is. Where is it? You can borrow Pearl's sweater. It's good enough for absolute zero. We've warmed up today. Right now it's -15 with a wind chill of -30. That's almost 20 degrees better than this time yesterday.

we have a winner!
damn, SS - that's harsh. i hope you weren't expected to venture out in all that.
it was 1 degree when i got up this morning. it's warmed up to a balmy 3 degrees with a -14 wind chill and 18 mph winds. when i got to work i knew it would be cold, because our office is in a big, drafty building. but some idiot turned the heat off upstairs, so it's like a meat locker up there. it's about 53 downstairs where i am. i'd like to say screw it and go home, but my boss beat me to it so i have to stay. good thing i found sky's coat.

damn, SS - that's harsh. i hope you weren't expected to venture out in all that. I was originally supposed to work by myself until 10:30PM on Monday, but my boss said go ahead and take a vacation day. Didn't have to ask me twice. I'll be going in tonight because I won't be alone. Friday night I made it home OK in the blowing and drifting snow, but then I got stuck in a drift in the driveway. With help I got out. Yesterday I only ventured out to the nearby Piggly Wiggly and the Post Office. Such is winter in Wisconsin.

Beer is a winter refugee's best friend! Chicago is one of the few major US cities that really know a cold winter (Minneapolis/St. Paul is another). My dad still says the coldest he's ever been is feeling the wind from the lake effect in Chicago. Respect, crowfan Chicken - I've been to Hawaii (beautiful place), so I can see that being cold for the climate. Being from the Great Plains makes the idea of not having a furnace in the house unfathomable, though it makes perfect sense in tropical places. Like spice said, it's all relative. Cold is cold for wherever you are. We're warming up, too. Supposed to be in the 30s tomorrow and Thursday. Things are looking up.
