I've seen the present of tv as far as I'm concerned. Bought a Roku 3 for the upcoming WWE Network. It doesn't launch for another month but two days into it I cut back my satellite service and ordered two more units for my other TVs. There are many channels with a diverse range of on demand movies, shorts, and documentaries . For $4.99 per month there's a package featuring almost 500 Something Weird Video releases plus a few other channels. All commercial free. There are hundreds of free niche channels that include commercials with varied programming but the commercials seem to be few and far between. Fair enough. I watched a good horror flick in 1080p and an excellent documentary on Texas garage bands in the sixties. Nothing to speak of in terms of live stuff yet but a la carte will be the way of the future.

I've got a Roku as well and I really enjoy it! I mostly just use it for Netflix and Amazon Instant Video at the moment, though it works great for watching stuff on my downstairs TV. And even though they don't have an offical YouTube channel for Roku, there's a workaround for it.

Google Roku private channels and you'll find a number of additional stations that aren't on the official site. There are tons of them. Eventually networks will offer themselves a la carte. I tried a digital antennae once and picked a grand total of zero channels. They don't reach here on the edge of nowhere. If I could get they right mix of twenty stations for live sports, local news, etc. I'd say goodbye satellite.

I bought one because Time Warner offers an app for it, so I can get cable in my bedroom without paying them for the extra box, etc. The free channels and Netfix are just gravy. Most of the free movies I've found are pretty crappy, but I like crap so it all works out.

I just switched back to Time Warner today for tv service. I loved my Direct TV but it was a money thing. I got 200 channels, their sports tier, and an ultimate internet upgrade for $85 per month. Plus whole home DVR and HBO, Showtime,... for a year. The Roku app is icing on the cake. Working well for me so far. I'm streaming AMC now. Time Warner equipment us 1080i not 1080p but my eyeballs can't tell the difference. And I'm saving $30 or so per month for 50 more mostly useless channels plus the premium movies. Drawback is no NFL package but I need to save the bucks. And TW equipment isn't up to par with D TV.

I get the NFL Network and NFL Redzone with Time Warner but with Direct you had to buy the $300 NFL Sunday Ticket to get Redzone. I'd talk them down to $180 but still. Now that I'm trying to support two households and a nut wife's treatment I've got to count my pennies.

Hey, I'm back with Direct TV! They called me with an offer I couldn't refuse. 205 channels plus Sunday Ticket for $66 per month for year. I was sad to leave them in the first place. Their equipment is better as is their customer service. They'll be here tomorrow to hook me up.

Just goes to show, you play hardball with these crooks and they'll cut a deal to keep you around. My in laws played this game with Time Warner, and I suppose I will too when they try to ratchet up my bill.

I was ready to leave Time Warner the day they hooked me up. I had told sales that I wanted one Radio Frequency box because it had to be mounted on the back of a wall mounted TV. Sales said no worries, they would make note.
Saturday Larry the Cable Guy (yep, his name) shows up and says that we ain't got no RF boxes. That sales lies all the time. They give him too many installs a day to do, won't hire him as an in house installer (he's a sub), and their equipment sucks.
I already knew their equipment wasn't as good and he was there and I was saving money so he hooked me up. My wife would have to live with the cable running from the wall mounted TV should she ever return. We also have telephone with them and internet so he changed out my telephone modem and away he went. Before leaving he gave me his cell and said to be sure to call him if I needed anything at all.
10-15 minutes after he left I decided to get on the internet. No connection. Tried to call LtCG but he didn't answer and his voice mail was full. So I called Time Warner. Only took FOUR HOURS with technical support to get going. After having me suffer most of this time with barely english speaking folks, they finally gave to to a tier 3 rep. After about 5 minutes he figured out that the installer hadn't connected the new modem properly to my router. A+ to him. F- to everyone else. At least I'm rolling. I called Direct and told them I was sorry but I had to go. They responded professionally and tried to retain me but I said it was a done deal.
All my cable cover plates are white. Saturday night I noticed LtCG used a brown one when he hooked up the line that's going to piss off my nutty wife should she return.
Sunday Direct TV calls. I had told them I was reluctantly leaving. They told me that life wasn't the same without me as their customer. So for $66 per month I could have their 205 channel package plus they would give me NFL Sunday Ticket free next season. That worked for me.
So I called Time Warner on Sunday to downgrade my service. ONE AND ONE HALF HOUR later we had it done. They wanted to charge me $38 per month more than before to put me back the way I was. That my old promotion wasn't available anymore. Despite reminding them that the nice Indian salesman named Mix lied about RF, I had to work through about three levels to get to only $6 more per month. Then I surrendered.
If someone would come along that could offer high speed internet here, I'd leave Time Warner in a heartbeat. That was the sorriest service I've ever had in my life.

Back to the Roku. WWE Network has their stuff together. Streaming flawlessly. Something Weird Video is a hoot and there are a couple commercial free public domain movie channels that I paid nominal fees. I think one is $1.99 per month. The other (less titles) was $2.50 for life. Plus a free channel streaming a horror host named Dr. Lobo. Some west coast dude. I like the cut of his jib. Funny stuff.

I used to have a Roku box but when I got a smart TV (a panasonic in my case) it seemed redundant to have the Roku box. But is it something I should be considering getting back again, if I have a smart TV? I actually use the smart TV to access youtube, which is where I watch MST almost always.
