Anthony Cumia of the "Opie and Anthony" show was fired fired for racist comments on twitter last week. He's a shock jock . Let him say what he wants. Don't listen if you don't like it. I've been a Sirius subscriber for a decade but won't be one much longer.

i don't get how shock jocks get hired, and then they get fired for saying something shocking.

Like Spice, I'm always amazed at how people react when "shock jocks" say something shocking. Why are you surprised? Isn't that why you hired them in the first place?

His tweets came after a woman assaulted him when he was out playing with a new camera he had gotten recently and was playing with on the show that day. So he was really pissed off and venting at the time.

And they fired him for things that he tweets all the time honestly.

Reading his comments it seems like he's some kinda of crazy racist. He might not be, but that's what it sounds like to me (someone who's never listened to his show aside from a few Louis C.K. interviews). Even though he went through something bad it doesn't give you license to say horrible things. Example: if Mel Brooks hit me in the face with a baseball bat I don't have license to go on an anti-semetic tirade.
And Remember, a company doesn't fire someone like this because they're morally outraged: they do it because they don't want people pissed off at them. They weigh their options: Can we get this guy apologize profusely? Will he go to rehab to say booze made him say bad stuff? If we stand behind him will we be judged as supporting his views? How much money is this guy making for us? The company is out to make money and cover their ass, and this decision is entirely based on that.

It is but SiriusXM is stupid here. They are doing this to placate people that don't subscribe to their service and are pissing off the people that actually do subscribe. They have the 2nd or 3rd most popular channel on the platform.

I have a feeling if Mel Brooks ever hit you with a bat, it would be explicitly in order to coax an anti-Semitic rant he could then play off of for a few laughs.
Anyway, I'm only seeing the tweets CNN quoted but the ones I saw don't strike me as racist. As a matter of fact, they may be the first non-racist things i've ever seen Anthony utter.

I saw a lot of it unfold live. There were some racial things tossed about but he was calling her every name in the book that he could think of. He called her the c word more than he referred to her race.

i'm not scandalized by his firing. way i see it, being a shock jock is a bit like playing in a professional hard rock band. if you're doing it right, it sounds like it's totally spontaneous and there's no craft or thought to it, but there actually is. Van Halen worked very hard to sound like a bunch of lazy beach bums, Opie and Anthony should be working very hard to sound like put-upon working-class taxpayers. Or whatever it is they do.

I think it makes SiriusXM hypocrites but that's just my opinion.

I think he was fired more for his tweets than his on-air rant. Apparently he repeatedly referred to all black people as savages repeatedly, although he deleted them so I have to take others' word for it. If so that's pretty reprehensible.

I've been a Sirius/XM subscriber since around 2005, I wonder what is going to become of Opie and Jimmy Norton in October when their contract negotiations come up. I just can't see them being re-signed without Anthony, and maybe that's a good thing as the show will not be the same without Anthony. I don't visit O&A message boards but the common opinion on youtube video comment sections (for whatever that's worth) is that they won't be resigned and maybe they will all hook up again in the future in a different format, namely a podcast.
I don't know, I'm just sad, I love this show. Anthony seems to be a Mystery Science fan as well. He has referenced MST a few times on the show.

I have to admit i'm really not sure why anyone would ever voluntarily "tweet." As far as I can tell it's only useful for getting oneself fired.
