I love Squirm. Guess I like bad, ugly movies.
A couple excellent episodes. A couple fair episodes. Some nice extras. I've already pre-ordered mine.

Very excited about this one. "Painted Hills" is (obviously) my all-time fave ep. Also love "Squirm" and "Screaming Skull." ("Jungle Goddess" I'm not so fond of.)

Have there been any pics of these "coasters"? I'm tempted to order from Shout for these Coasters, but I mean, 10 bucks difference plus shipping is a lot if these are lame little cardboard thing-a-majigs. Anyone?

These extras are looking sweet! New TD intros from Joel, possibly the 91-95 marathon bumpers, and a look int the making or history of the marathons? I've really got to pre order this set, although I'd still like to see the coasters before I make a decision.

Haven't seen Jungle Goddess or the 'Phantom Creeps' short, though it's part of the 'serial short' collection Shout released last year. Loved The Painted Hills and 'Body Care and Grooming' short. The Screaming Skull is another fine episode with one of their best shorts. I haven't seen Squirm yet, but 'A Case of Spring Fever' is yet another fave.
I kinda hope they release both Radar Secret Service and The Amazing Transparent Man for Volume XXXII so we get both Union Pacific shorts at once ('Last Clear Chance' and 'The Days of Our Years').

Ugly movies? While I don't have Mr. Atari's delicate constitution (I don't know how I could enjoy this show if I let so many movies get to me like that) but I'm with him on Strange Creatures... that one is murder. Squirm is cake walk (as were the CT movies) by comparison.
As for the extra's I like 'em, it's a good mix, a fun theme. And I'm happy that Screaming Skull is getting the featurette. There should be some interesting stories there.

Ugly movies? While I don't have Mr. Atari's delicate constitution (I don't know how I could enjoy this show if I let so many movies get to me like that) The show didn't really specialize in those types of films until the end of the run. Let's be honest, the earlier seasons never had anything as ugly as "Touch of Satan". "Girl in Gold Boots", "Boggy Creek II", or "Squirm". Sure, they had terrible crap, but nothing that felt like those films. Not that I don't enjoy ToS, GIGB or BGII, I'm just making a point about the nature of the films. But you're right-- if MST had used more of the type of films that CT used ("Oozing Skull", "Legacy of Blood", "Blood of the Vampires", etc.) then I probably wouldn't have been a MSTie. I don't think it's a matter of my constitution, there are plenty of genres I wouldn't sit through for 200 episodes. Shaky-cam films, for example. Or Rogers & Hammerstein musicals. Or Michael Moore documentaries... *shudder*. In a perfect world, Cinematic Titanic would have been solely dedicated to riffing old Love Boat episodes.

I never really considered Gold Boots or Boggy Creek to be ugly myself, and if they were I found that aspect to be overwhelmed by the goofiness of the production. But I think I understand your point.
I think the style of movie changed as the style of riffing changed, as it became less laughing with the movie and more along the lines of (to paraphrase Rifftrax's tagline) "this movie has it coming." There's less "angry" riffs that can be made at the expense of harmless fluff like Phantom Planet as opposed to Devil Fish, which is a harsh movie in tone and viewing. The most glaring difference between Trace and Bill's Crow is Bill had a more temperamental vibe, most likely because they found that tone worked for Bill and in riding with it Mike and Kevin followed suit and they found movies that complimented it. Or maybe that's just my theory. Of course I became a fan in the Sci-Fi era so I might be biased and used to it.

In his 007 intro Joel said that the movie created an environment for them to work on. And I can see how a movie like 007 can foster a more pleasant environment than say, a Sidehackers. I can also understand how certain environments could become so unpleasant for some folks as to detract from the riffing.
But I believe for the most part, the humor wins out.
Considering CT: just saying the name “Johnny Incest” gives me a fit of the giggles. That’s an example of how they took something ugly and made it work for them, made it hilarious. I believe it’s a mistake to forget that first and foremost, this is a comedy. Locking in on the movie at the expense of the humor is a kin to throwing out the baby with the bath water.
Though I admit my own failing in that when it comes to Strange Creatures, it’s one case where I can’t give the baby its due.

I think Incredibly Strange Creatures had it's moments at least, on the other hand I personally find Touch of Satan too slow and ugly for me to fully enjoy the riffing. Anyway like you guys have been saying, there was definitely some changes in riffing style later in the series. And frankly, the extra "angriness" is part of why I don't really warm up to the Sci-Fi era as much the CC days. (Torgo's comments on Bill are also why I largely prefer Trace's Crow too)
Keeping on topic, I wonder if the XXXI pre-order coasters will have new artwork from Steve Vance on them, I'd enjoy that.

Though I admit my own failing in that when it comes to Strange Creatures, it’s one case where I can’t give the baby its due. I think we all get different things out of it. I personally think the relationship of the movie to the riffs is symbiotic and that the movie itself is at times the most important character on the show. A show can be funny but feature a movie that tests your endurance then you'll end up disliking it. Similar to how if you were a fan of another comedy show, where if there were jokes that made you laugh but you didn't care for the plot you'd give it lower marks. I for the most part love digging out these wierd movies I've never seen before and sitting through them. The variety of film and not knowing what I'd get next is part of what kept me coming back to it. I personally love Incredibly Strange Creatures because not only is the riffing excellent but its such a strange WTF acid trip of a movie that I felt worked well for reactions from the crew ("You know what I'm looking at right now? That exit sign."). I understand that its a putrid movie, but it worked on the show for me and I got my lulz. Though personally the movies I find tedious are movies like Moon Zero Two and Village of the Giants, so I'm probably not looking at it through the same eyes as you.

Torgo, As my original post shows, I don't dispute that. I even point out that I understand that.... to a degree. But the primary function of comedy, ANY comedy, is to make me laugh. I don't care if it's dark, ugly, silly, smart... if you make me laugh I'll follow you to hell and back.
Hell, Bunuel's "L'age D'Or" (for example) is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. I howled with laughter... but much of it is in bad taste (a little boy is shot, Jesus plays the part of a serial killer rapist). Part of me was like, "I should feel guilty about laughing at this..." but the other half was saying, "Screw it, this is brilliantly subversive." But yeah, I can understand someone being upset with it, and feeling that it's not funny or brilliant, but offensive.

Well, couldn't quite pull the trigger on the $65 Shout pre-order. Went with pre-ordering from Sears again with the list price of about $40, but by using a coupon and rewards points, getting it for something like $17. No coasters are worth that difference. I really wanted to have the set well before Thanksgiving, but oh well. I've used some of the savings to get The Frank. It plays like an excellent, extended MST3K host segment with a (relatively) big budget. Fun stuff. Almost could be considered to be in the MST3K canon. Several MST3K references. Must watch again. Also have not watched much of the extras yet.

If you go to Shout Factory's Website you can see all the mini-posters for the set. I have to say none of them are really that great this time around.

I know this sounds silly, but I think they should of saved Night of the Blood Beast for XXXI so they could put the Turkey Day version of Night of the Blood Beast on here instead of Jungle Goddess.
