Well, this isn't TV, it's the Internet, but that's the new thing these days for watching shows. You crazy kids with your Hula Hoops and video game cartridges.
Anyway - Has anyone seen these? It's fan based episodes of Star Trek leaving off from when TOS stopped airing, bridging the gap from the original series with Kirk and crew until The Motion Picture, continuing the idea of the "Five Year Mission". They took the idea from Gene Roddenberry who wanted to do a show with this title in the 70's with the original cast but it was never done.
They have some short snippets of one off scenes, and they have entire hour-long episodes and a two-hour movie. (Edit: well, an hour and a half). It's completely made by this big group of fans, financed out of pocket by them and by donations from other fans. They have a studio and recreate the feel of the old sets and do some exterior CGI's which are quite good. (They even go so far as to start each ep with the NBC peacock - brought to you in living color).
I was actually binge watching a mini marathon of the first few episodes up until the movie, which I'm going to watch today. There's a playlist on Youtube where you can watch all the eps they've done in chronological order (in the timeline of the show, not the order they made them).
Pretty damn cool.
It's fully endorsed by Paramount and whoever else owns the rights, as long as no profit is made off of them. They got a writer from the original series to write an episode, Majel Barrett-Roddenberry (before passing) lent her voice for the computer, Walter Keonig and George Takei both did guest star stints on episodes that focused on their characters.
The writing, special effects and costumes are all very well done, I think. Some of the acting is very good, some of it isn't. There were two actors (that I've seen so far) who have done Spock, neither of them got it quite right. They are doing their own interpretations of the character, of course, and they're not too bad for maybe someone else, but it's not quite Spock; one spoke too haltingly, and the other is just kinda wrong.
The first actor to play Kirk (James Cawley) does a good job. He's not trying to do Shatner, per se, but he's got some of the speech style and mannerisms to a point. He kind of looks like a cross between Shatner and the guy who plays Bones in the JJ Abrams versions, heh. (Edit: Karl Urban, his name escaped me for a moment). Cawley is the one who started this whole endeavor with like minds. There's a new Kirk now, and Cawley did a cameo in one of the episodes, cute, just like a "real" TV show.
I'll write more on this as I watch it. If you like Star Trek, you should check it out.
