Well, how did week 421 go?
I celebrated our nation's birthday with "Patriotic Shorts" from RT. And I was reminded of the really important things our country stands for, like Freedom of Speech ("The Bill of Rights in Action"), fruit farms ("What it Means to Be an American"), beer ("As We Like It"), and Bob Crane ("Patriotism"). And great riffing from the guys; that's patriotic, too.
Regarding the latest "Chit-Chat & Tid-Bits" with MJ & Chris, I can't say anything. They pushed it back another week. (To quote Charlie Brown, "AUUUUUUUUGH!!!")
And as for "Track of the Moonbeast", it's not too bad, as far as low-budget 1970s pseudo-scientific watch-on-Saturday-afternoon-on-Channel-9-after-"Doctor Who" movies go. And it got Bill Finger, the only-recently formally-acknowledged co-creator of "Batman", a paycheck. And I really think "California Lady" is a nice, catchy song. The riffing was good, though. And I liked the host segments, especially the "Legends of Rock" sketch.
Well, shall we move on to week 422? Both Outsider selections are off-rotation. The first selection is... "The Mads are Back LIVE: A Night of Shorts XII"... - They're celebrating the third anniversary of their on-line shows tonight. This should be good. ... and the second Outsider is... "Chit-Chat & Tid-Bits"... - It's supposed to go out live on Saturday morning... we hope. ... and the Originals selection is... TO BE ANNOUNCED. - I'll post this later on today. My apologies.

So, this week's Originals selection is... "Being from Another Planet" (Show 405). - Where'd I put those crystals, anyway?
We now return you to your regularly scheduled program...

I'm a bit pressed for time, so I'll recap week 422 later. But here are the selections for week 423. Both of the Outsider selections are off-rotation. The first Outsider is... "Movie Jo Night: 'Daughter of the Mind'"... - That's live on-line on Tuesday night. It's a TV-movie with Ray Milland, but that's really all I know. ... and the second Outsider and the Originals selection are combined this week into... "MST3Kon". - It's part of this year's BlobFest in Phoenixville, PA, combining screenings from Season 13 and appearances by Joel, Jonah & Emily.
We'll be right back...

It seems I posted too soon. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I couldn't get back to Phoenixville on Sunday. So, we have these last minute substitutions. For the Outsiders, we have... "Return to Eden Prairie" (Pt. 2)... - I never get tired of hearing about the show's history. ... and the Originals selection is... "Jack Frost" (Show 813). - Hey, the cat was just doing its job with the broom thing.
I hear things went well at the Colonial on Sunday. I'll have to ask around for more details.

Sheesh, I have the worst sense of time possible. Anyway, here's what we have for week 424. The first Outsider (non-rotation) is... "The Mary Jo Pehl Show: 2023 Shareholders Meeting"... - That's live on-line tonight, assuming I don't lose power. I don't know if they're providing meal vouchers. ... while the on-rotation Outsider is... "RT Live: Octaman"... - Does he have blue or black ink? Sometimes, that's important. ... and the Originals selection is... "The Atomic Brain" (Show 518). - Is there a green version of this movie based on solar power?
Stay tuned...

I apologize for the delay. It was due to a combination of getting ready for my annual vacation at my Ancestral Home, and ProBoards blocking my IP address at home. (What did I do to offend them?) Anyway, here's a look back at week 424.
The Shareholders' Meeting for MJ's show went quite well. She gave a listenable keynote speech, then we got down to the details. It seems the show is doing quite well and providing a good return. I'm not sure how I'll be listing this on my next 1040 form, though. There was also a nice video review of the previous year, and a guest (whose name escapes me) providing a dizzying bunch of stats re: Movie Jo Night. (Which movie had the most walking scenes? How many animal attacks were there?) Yes, I didn't get my meal choice for lunch, but you can't have everything.
As for "Octaman", it's basically an uncredited, vastly inferior remake of "Creature from the Black Lagoon". Poor production values, pitch black photography, lousy characters, an ending that's supposed to be sad but isn't...this movie has it all. And I'm pretty sure this was one of those movies Channel 9 would run on Saturdays right after "Doctor Who". The program also included an anti-drug short featuring McGruff. And if the sight of a trenchcoated anthropomorphic dog growling at you isn't enough to get you off drugs, what will? The riffing, though, was fine, even if the movie made Bill quit RT for a few minutes. I watched this from the DVD, which included the great pre-show titles.
As for "The Atomic Brain", I think Channel 5 ran this one back in the day. It's dark, gray, depressing, and filled with characters that are evil, stupid, or both. Well, at least there was a black cat who survived, albeit with an evil brain. By comparison, the short on Juvenile Delinquency is a big ray of sunshine. Nice to know there once were kids who believed enough in democracy to try and use it for good purposes. Great riffing on this one. The host segments were OK, including the return of Magic Voice. And we got one of the better Invention Exchanges. I wonder how tough it was for Trace to play Crow playing Dr. F.
So, that worked out well, I guess. Let's move on to what's left of week 425. I'll do my best to set aside enough time for it, whenever I'm not at the harness racing, the horse pull, the demolition derby, the tractor pull, the fireworks, the baseball game, the revival showing of "Beach Blanket Bingo", and the rest. Anyway, the first non-rotation Outsider selection is... "RT: Farm Family Shorts"... - Well, I'll be at the farm, anyway, so why not? ... and the on-rotation second Outsider is... "CT: Doomsday Machine"... - Not the good one with William Windom. ... and the Originals selection is... "Fire Maidens of Outer Space" (Show 416). - Yes, I recognize that lovely melody "A Stranger in Paradise".
Enjoy!

Reporting in from somewhere in Northeastern PA, here's a look back at week 425.
The "Farm Family Shorts" are among my favorite RT efforts. The riffing from Bridget & MJ is very funny, and more affectionate kidding than harsh. Plus, I figure that's what life was probably like for the farmers in my family around that time (circa 1967-68). It seemed very familiar to me from the farm work I did a few years later. (However at my Uncle Bruce's farm, we didn't have a pipe system to get the milk to the bulk tank. I lugged it there in a bucket.)
As for "The Doomsday Machine", I can only figure the reason this isn't mentioned more among the worst movies ever made is that people don't know about it. They should, because it rots. The later-shot footage doesn't match the older stuff at all, the production values are ultra-cheap, the script makes no sense, the acting isn't very good, and the ending is just plain awful. At least the Titans did a good job with the riffing, and Josh's bit near the end was very funny.
By comparison, "Fire Maidens of Outer Space" is still bad. But is marginally better. Yes, it's heavily padded, sexist for the period, ridden with cliches, and pretty nonsensical. But the music reminded me of one of the better Time-Life offer commercials. (I still remember the 8-tracks cost $12.98.) The riffing was great, and the Invention Exchange was good, too. But the main attraction is the appearance of Timmy, the evil doppelganger of Crow. That was pretty cool, especially when Joel goes into Ripley mode.
Well, I'll be getting over to the horse pull momentarily. But first, here's what's up for week 426. The off-rotation Outsider is... "The Mads are Back LIVE: I Accuse My Parents"... - That's live tonight, but I'll have to catch it on tape delay. ... while the off-rotation Outsider is... "Life After MST3K: Kevin Murphy"... - Actually, he's been pretty busy since then. ... while the Original Selection is... "Hercules Against the Moon Men" (Show 410). - SAAAAAAANDSTOOOOORM!
We'll be right back...

Slight problem, folks. I'd hoped to keep up during my vacation at my Ancestral Home. Unfortunately, one of the DVDs I brought locked up, and I forgot to bring the other one. I'll catch up ASAP, and let know how things turned out. In the interim, here are the selections for week 427. The off-rotation Outsider is... TBA... - I could've sworn "Movie Jo Night" was tonight, but it ain't. I'll get back to you. ... while the on-rotation selection is... "Movie Sign with the Mads: 'Citizen Kane'"... - I'm not going to Sing Sing! SING SING!! ... and the Originals selection is... "Mighty Jack" (Show 314). - At least it isn't "Simple Jack".
Stay tuned...

Well, the TBA Outsider this week is... "The Mary Jo Pehl Show: Chit Chat & Tid Bits". - That's live tomorrow night on the Clubhouse...assuming I didn't mess up the schedule again.
Now, there are TWO REASONS I haven't mentioned the RT Live show of "RAD". The first one is because I just plumb forgot it was this week. And the second one is that I'm currently fighting a summer cold and will have to miss it. I'll catch it when it's on home release.
DRAT!!

I don't know why people keep putting up with me. Thanks to my still getting over my cold and getting back to work after my vacation, the selections for week 428 are a bit thin, right now. The off-rotation selection for the Outsiders is... "Movie Jo Night: 'Death Cruise'"... - That's on-line live tonight. Hope the captain doesn't decide to sink this b---h. ... while the selections for the on-rotation Outsider and the Original are... TBA. - Gimme about three hours and I'll pull the cards for them as soon as I'm home.

And, as promised, the on-rotation Outsider selection is... "RT: Fist of Fury"... - Bruce Lee. 'nuff said. ... while the Originals selection is... "Wild Rebels" (Show 207). - I'm doing this for the kicks.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to the Clubhouse...

It seems I've been falling behind again. I'm going to have to come up with a whole bunch of new excuses, I suppose. In the interim, I do have the selections for Week 429. The off-rotation Outsider is... "The Mary Jo Pehl Show: 'Phone Trouble- A Play in One Act'"... - That's on live tonight. Have the names been changed to protect the innocent? ... while the on-rotation Outsider is... "Life After MST3K: Mary Jo Pehl"... - Well, life before her current shows. ... and the Originals selection is... "City Limits" (Show 403). - And a belated Happy Birthday to KIM CATRALL!
We now pause for station identification...

Sorry, again. First it was my vacation, then it was recovering from my vacation. Now it's getting ready for the fall season. I'm just a fountain of excuses. Anyway, for what's left of week 430, the first Outsiders selection is... "RT: Wide World of Shorts" (1st half)... - Is Jim McKay in this one? ... and the second Outsider is... "Movie Sign with the Mads: 'Ed Wood'"... - Better get an angora sweater for this one. ... and the Originals selection is... "Robot Holocaust" (Show 110). - Yew and yor dawter awe doomed!

Hey! This week I can do a review of the previous week. How quaint. Anyway, week 430...
"Wide World of Shorts" featured the usual assortment of "educational" materials. There's "Snap Out of It" (get a grip and accept you're a failure), "Alcohol Trigger Films" (little kids can be bigger drunks than Otis Campbell), "Carnivorous Plants" (they kill bugs DEAD), "Aqua Frolics" (think "Snow Thrills", but with liquid water) and "Why Vandalism?" (be careful with rabbits). Fortunately, the riffing is very good.
As for the Mads' look at "Ed Wood", they & Carolina were very complimentary of this, as well as the actual movies Ed did. Yes, they acknowledge his technical ineptitude and his personal problems (alcoholism, not transvesticism), but they note his passion for film. It's a very interesting segment of the late, lamented podcast.
As for "Robot Holocaust", there have been lousier post-apocalypse movies, but not too many. Poorly acted, very low budget, and very derivative, it's one of the worst. But, unless you watch it, Mike's later Hexfield appearance as Valeria makes no sense. However, the host segments were OK, and the riffing was good. And we even got to see part of another Commando Cody chapter. (I wonder if RT will feature the chapters MST didn't get to.)
Well, let's look forward at week 431. The off-rotation Outsider is... "Movie Jo Night: 'Bad Ronald'"... - That's on-line live tonight. I saw this movie back in the 70s, and it's pretty disturbing. ... while the on-rotation Outsider is... "RT Live: Manos, the Hands of Fate"... - Oh, dear. ... and the Originals selection is... "Monster a-Go Go" (Show 421). - Double oh, dear.
Enjoy!

I'm a bit short on time, so I'll do the review later. But here are the selections for week 432. The off rotation Outsider is... "The Mads are Back LIVE: She Shoulda Said No!"... - And you thought that "Reefer Madness" was the last word on pot! ... while the on-rotation Outsider is... "FC: The Giant of Marathon"... - Which marathon? Boston or New York? ... and the Originals selection is... "Hercules Unchained" (Show 408). - Sword & Sandal twin spin!
Stay tuned...
