The idea of an anthology series is sound. In fact it probably would have been a better Halloween series than the one that currently exists.
What went wrong is that they introduced the idea with a really crap movie.

I may also play it extra safe and not watch any movies in the franchise. ...though, honestly, it's on my list for things to watch for So I Finally... so I may get to it some day.

If you're taking advice for that, take my advise for this too: Watch the original if nothing else. Genuine classic right there. H20 also has it's moments, though it's disposable, and both Curse and Resurrection are hilarious.

The first is definitely worth watching. After that, I always kind of liked the fourth one (Return of Michael Meyers).
Halloween could have been a decent anthology-type series, but Torgo is right, Season of the Witch was the wrong movie to try and jump start that idea. It does have a certain John Carpenter feel to it, though, but it's like someone tried to rip off They Live (poooooorly) and give it more of a horror feel. Just a strange movie.
