I just got an e-mail announcing that Rifftrax is now offering MST3K episodes for stream and download from their website. There's also a page on their site for this: www.rifftrax.com/mystery-science-theater-3000They are starting with The Final Sacrifice and The Pumaman, and new episodes will be added each "MST3K Monday." Apparently each episode will also have a new intro from Mike. The email had some interesting wording: "This is finally a chance for Mike, Kevin and Bill to benefit from their work on Mystery Science Theater 3000 thanks to the help of our fans!" So the real question here is "what's changed?" This + new social media accounts + mst3k.com selling their stock and closing is certainly pointing toward something happening. Either Jim Mallon is finally loosening up the reigns, or - my theory - Shout has purchased the rights to the show from Jim.

Glad to hear they will finally be getting some money from it again! Though I do hope the rights haven't been sold. I though it was cool that they still belonged to someone involved with the show, even though that person was Jim Mallon.

I'd be interested to know how well these are selling. I mean, most everyone that wants them has to have these episodes by now. And, are even the die-hardiest MST3K/RiffTrax/Mike fans willing to pony up $10 bucks for a minute or two of Mike commentary?

From the latest Rifftrax email:
As we all presumed, but it's still interesting to see it confirmed.
No one just gives away money, so I wonder why Shout is doing this? Presumably they're getting something in return.

If you feel like supporting Mike, Kevin, and Bill you can donate at Rifftrax. Since I also have purchased every Rifftrax download I wish they'd add a donate button for me.

I think it could be good for new fans like myself who don't have any of the dvds. Ah, right. forget about them. And there's probably going to be more and more of them with the ongoing success of RiffTrax and the return of MST3K proper.

From the latest Rifftrax email: Good will can be worth a lot on its own, too. With Shout! bringing back MST3K with Joel, it doesn't hurt to have positive vibes coming from the rest of the old BBI camp. Trace even commented on his Twitter feed that he was really surprised and happy that Rifftrax was providing the episodes with a significant portion of the money going toward the old cast - (Mike, Joel, Frank, Trace, Josh, Kevin, Mary Jo, Bill and Bridget). Sales of regular MST3K DVDs and such are not distributed that way. So while it is kind of odd, I can see at least one reason why Shout! would do this.

I'll be honest, I've never seen Puma Man, so I may at least drop ten bucks on the download of that one. It'll support the cast, I'll get the episode, I'll support Rifftrax, and it'll theoretically increase the goodwill bonds between the Brains and Rifftrax and Shout! Factory and the new MST3K. Win-win-win-win.

Affy, how can you be a member of this board as long as you have and have never watched Pumaman of all episodes? I could understand if it were It Lives By Night or something barely talked about like that, but PUMAMAN?

I was wondering about that since earlier Trace said on Twitter he didn't get money from sales on Rifftrax but glad that it's the opposite.
