Ok, so. The campaign may not get to 5.5 million. And it probably won't end exactly on 3.3 or 4.4 million.
Joel's been asked about what happens if the campaign ends with enough for an episode or two, but not all 3. He's said that those episodes that've been funded would be made. Complicating matters is the extra $200k raised after the first goal.
There's a $200k cushion built into the budget, because each episode actually takes a bit more to make than the 1.1 per 3 episodes that's listed. Each group of 3 episodes uses about $50k of that cushion (which means the first goal wasn't really met until they reach 2.05 million). So each episode uses $16,666.66 of the pooled cushion. The Kickstarter for some reason says this only applies this $200k to the last 9 episodes, but that wouldn't make any sense, unless the first 3 episodes are made for cheap.
So. With the cushion money sitting unused for funding towards new episodes until each new episode is funded, each episode, with all the costs and fees associated, would be equal to $366,666.66. That's the important number.
If, for example, the 3.3 million goal isn't reached, the remaining $150,000 of cushion money could be used to fund part of an episode.
If the 4.4 million goal isn't reached, the remaining $100,000 of cushion money could be used.
If the 5.5 million goal isn't reached, the remaining $50,000 of the cushion money could be used.
Whoo...ok. With all that in mind...
3 episdes = $2 million
$200k cushion = $2.2 million, $50k used on first 3 episodes
Episode 4 = $2.566 million (if 3.3 million or more is made)
Episode 5 = $2.933 million (if 3.3 million or more is made)

If less than 3.3 million is made, the cushion is used:
Episode 4 = $2.433 million ($133,333 of extra cushion left over after 4 episodes)
Episode 5 = $2.816 million ($116,666 of extra cushion left over after 5 episodes)
_____________________________
Episode 6 = $3.3 million
Episode 7 = $3.66 million (if 4.4 million or more is made)
Episode 8 = $4.03 million (if 4.4 million or more is made)

If less than 4.4 million is made, the cushion is used:
Episode 7 = $3.58 million ($83,333 of extra cushion left over after 7 episodes)
Episode 8 = $3.96 million ($66,666 of extra cushion left over after 8 episodes)
______________________________
Episode 9 = $4.4 million
Episode 10 = $4.76 million (if 5.5 million or more is made)
Episode 11 = $5.13 million (if 5.5 million or more is made)
Episode 12 = 5.5 million

If less than 5.5 million is made, the cushion is used:
Episode 10 = $4.73 million ($33,333 of extra cushion left after 10 episodes)
Episode 11 = $5.11 million ($16,666 of extra cushion left after 10 episodes)
My math...isn't 100%, but that should give you a general idea of what milestones are reached and when/if.
As of now we've raised $2.47 million. If no more money was raised, we'd be able to afford 4 episodes.
