That's very sad news. RIP.
Effect on new MST3K--you never know, he might be the kind of person that pulls back for awhile. Or, he might be the kind of person that wants to continue working, especially something as unique and 'fun' as MST3K to keep him going and keep some positives in his life.

Whatever decision he makes in regards to continuing with the series I support fully, though I personally would love to see his talents onscreen so I would obviously prefer him to stick with it.
Though it must be pointed out that his onscreen presence would only require one day of shooting per episode, so I doubt it would be too strenuous. It would probably be more likely he ducks out of the writing process before dropping out of the show altogether, especially since he considers this a dream project. Hell, maybe building up to a "Creation of TV's Son of TV's Frank" story arc during the opening episodes might allow him a leave of absence should he require one.

I totally understand if he pulls out of the season. It's so heartbreaking. My thoughts are with him and their daughter.

So sorry to hear about this. Totally understandable if he doesn't continue.

Just got an update asking for a moment of silence and saying they will postpone the next update until next week.

That's terrible news, and surely must be completely devastating to him. I hope he can find some comfort in knowing that we're all behind him and his daughter during this most difficult time.

I'm not sure if Joel realizes this, but if he twists the SOL like in the drawings he's showing off, from the side it looks like a giant penis.

We've got Update Sign!
Joel talks about the design for the new SOL. One thing he says is that he wants to tweak the shape to fit widescreen movies. Which is interesting, but seems unnecessary based on the theme song. I mean, they can show whatever size movies they want and I'll just accept that it's happening in the SOL regardless of logic. So I wonder why he is interested in doing this.

I agree, to both the previous comments. I don't think he needs to redesign anything from a plot/continuity perspective. Although I actually think it's very neat and cute that Joel apparently actually envisioned the locations of the various sets within the bone ship all these years. MST3K is my favorite show by a good measure, and I've never thought once that the bone ship had any relation to the host segs, tunnel transition, and theater sets. I don't really care, in fact the contrary, these are the exact kinds of updates I was hoping for from the Kickstarter backer 'rewards.' And I'll say again how cool I think it is that Joel is finally getting the chance to 'play' in the world he created and, it turns out, never stopped caring about. ...But I do agree with Torgo--I hope someone mentions to Joel the new likeness to -ahem- parts of the anatomy. ...it's amazing what rotating one set of ball like objects can do.

I'm trying to unsee it...I just can't. It's nice that Joel wants to put a new creative "twist" on it, but all I can think of is...

Maybe just because it's Friday, but I can't wrap my brain around why, as he technically explains, this needs to happen. I don't really care either way, but we did see the SOL in the movie and it looked just fine, inside and out. But no biggie!

What, you guys didn't change the shape of your house when you got a widescreen TV?
