Well, there's a New Update out today... and in addition to a lot of notes from Joel we've got some first looks at a new robot, the title sequence's design, and a... crazy geodesic dome weather balloon thingy that Joel says we'll never guess. Also: it's a shame about the delay due to international film rights. I can see how that kind of problem might not've been considered until now, even with all the pre-prep.

As someone once said, it wouldn't be MST3K without movie licensing issues. It was a nice update, and it's clear they're still in the early stages, even with all they've gotten done. Personally I'm in no rush. Just let me know when and where to tune in and I'm good to go.

I thoroughly enjoyed that email. Joel's updates are the only commercial emails I get that I take the time to read from start to finish.

I am really excited for the new robot and opening sequence. Joel is wonderful.

That new bot prototype is so cute! It looks kind of like a cross between Crow, Gypsy and Beeper.

As someone once said, it wouldn't MST3K without movie licensing issues. I said the same thing when I read the update. I'm glad we got a huge update.

Where da upd--oh, there's da updates!
Lots of cool info. The production delays do not surprise me.
The new robot is cool. It definitely feels like a relative of Tom, Crow, et al.
I really, really like this vibe of Joel's where he's going to share info and some inside stuff, but keep a lot of the final details for the show. I wish more of the entertainment world still worked that way.
Always nice to hear from from Joel; he just seems like a truly nice guy.
My one concern-- they plan on shooting the entire season in six weeks?!! C'mon! That's like 20+ hours of TV! I mean, maybe that schedule made sense when they thought they may only make 6 or even 9, but I don't now. It worries me. How can a show evolve over time when there is no time to evolve? I really hope this is a part of the plan that is reconsidered, and I wouldn't mind it slipping the schedule at all. It would make me feel better if I heard more like a week per episode (post pre-production). I know that's 14 weeks, but it worries me that they'll be writing all this material and not filming it, and it will lose that organic episode-to-episode, movie-to-movie feel.

I dunno, it does surprise me a little, cuz you'd think that Joel and Shout would be pretty good at the whole licensing thing by now. Probably no big deal, but I hope we don't lose any could-have-been-classic cheesy movies just so some silly [insert random mildly offensive--but said in jest--European slur here] can watch.

I hear ya, but Patton and Felicia in particular have multiple gigs to juggle and I'm sure their schedules are challenging. Plus, I'll bet because they're in California and involving so many more people on the backend of this effort, it may have to be done this way. It'll just have evolve from new season, to new season, to new season !

Don't forget: Joel is an old hand at this by now, and that counts for a lot.
The evolution of the original show from its KTMA days to, say, to the quality levels of Comedy Central Season 3 (and beyond) appears slow in retrospect because the Brains were blazing new ground at the time.
The new Brains should be much quicker at tweeking whatever needs to be tweeked because they already have a pretty good idea what works.

The new Brains should be much quicker at tweeking whatever needs to be tweeked because they already have a pretty good idea what works. I'm not so much worried about the tweaking as I am just the feel of each ep. If you've read about the show, they usually did a show a week, where they watched the movie, wrote the riffs over a few days, wrote the host skits, and then came in one day and did something like tape the host segs in the morning and then the film segs after lunch. So, what you would have is a whole show created from watching to writing to filming encapsulated in one week, and I think you can tell, especially in the earlier season around 2, 3, 4 that many episodes have their own 'feel'. I worry that churning everything together like this will give the show a more homogenous cookie cutter feel. I know that's how I feel about RiffTrax--they're pretty good, some I like a lot, some I don't even finish, but they rarely ever have a 'feel' to them. They're just another movie riffed from week to week. I think part of this is no host segs or 'characters', but I think another part is how they produce them. Did you know that on Rifftrax, they don't even all watch the whole movie anymore? They divvy out sections of the movie to the various writers and each writes jokes for his part.

I see what you're saying.
Well, I guess the smartest approach would be for people like Joel and Paul to get a head start on the writing ahead of time, fleshing out ideas here and there, before the new gang gets together to collaborate as a group.
That way, the final collaborative process won't feel as rushed.

You sum up my feelings about RiffTrax PERFECTLY! And I agree the show should have some room to breathe... I have a feeling the final effort will be a lot more "slick/modern" than we're used to with MST3k.

I've heard that's what happening with the new MST3K, as well. Also that the robot voices are going to be dubbed, and not even puppeteered by the actors. Definitely not holding my breath for this new season. Seems like it's gonna be missing that charm that made MST3K so amazing.
