It is, despite the fact that the Mads aren't yet introduced. But hey, it took a few episodes into Season 8 for that version of the theme song to make any sense, too. So they still mention "Servo" during the Robot Roll Call, but "Beeper" is still mentioned in the actual episode. Odd. If I remember correctly, the idea of the opening sequence and the theme song didn't occur to them until after the first two episodes were completed, and that it was taped around the same time as K03 (since Joel is wearing the same shirt and has the same haircut). That would explain the discrepancy: they taped K01, then they replaced Beeper with Servo before taping K02, then they wrote and recorded the theme song and added it to K01 and K02 after the fact.

Ok, first of all I'm REALLY happy the episodes saw the light of day - here's hoping K03 will too someday.... but do I really have to pay 1000 dollars JUST to view 2 episodes?!
Even that's too rich for me....

Honestly, I'd give $100 or so to them if they made them available at that range, if only to help secure the rights for future releases.

This is great! I've downloaded both and am on the second episode. One question, would you say the audio sync is a bit off? The opening Joel segment for K02 is the most apparent. Can't really judge by the movie itself, as the characters are made of wood! I hope everybody gets a chance to see all the KTMA episodes one way or another soon.

Clarification on the availability of K01/K02 from Ivan (as posted to Kickstarter):
I figured the $1000 price tag had a reason like this behind it. I also understand the dilemma: it would be great if all the fans could have free access to K01/K02, but Shout has legal restrictions on how they can distribute them. Also, in fairness, the bonus classic collection—of which K01 and K02 are a part—was always a reward specifically for Kickstarter backers of a sufficient level, and Joel left some pretty strong clues during the campaign that the KTMA shows would be a part of it (although he was understandably reluctant to promise anything he wasn't certain he could deliver at the time).

One question, would you say the audio sync is a bit off? The opening Joel segment for K02 is the most apparent. Can't really judge by the movie itself, as the characters are made of wood! I noticed that, too, but it's only barely noticeable ... and I'm certainly not going to complain about it, considering how long I've wanted to see this episode! I've only started on K02, but the thing that was most surprising to me (so far) was the introduction of Servo: there was no introduction! He doesn't appear in the opening segment; he just sort of rises up from the theater seat next to Joel after the first commercial break (at about 14:25) and joins in the riffing thereafter. Considering all the ideas that Joel had for other robots, perhaps Servo was seen at this point as just one of the robots who would come and go without explanation. So far, Servo's voice in this episode seems fairly close to Josh's natural speaking voice: he's affecting some sort of character voice for Servo, but it seems to go in and out and isn't as much of a departure as the "Marvin the Martian" voice he started experimenting with in subsequent episodes. Servo also seems to be serving snacks from his head, which I don't recall seeing him doing in later episodes. One cute moment that I liked occurred at about 12:15, when a spaceship started landing and happened to come down right between Joel's and Crow's theater seats. They both started and ducked out of the way, as if the ship was about to hit them. Unless I missed a similar moment in K01, this was the first instance of J&TB interacting with or reacting to the movie in a physical way. It must have gotten Joel thinking because I've noticed him playing with the idea a few subsequent times already in this episode (reaching out to touch objects in the movie, coughing at dust clouds, etc).

The fact that Mallon had an immaculate clip of K03 on the old official site (though I can't remember if that one was also on the Scrapbook tape) means there's still reason to hope for K03. I mean, just look at how Joel describes the discovery of these episodes - a full year after Shout!'s acquisition, they just happened upon a box that had the tapes? That tells me they haven't even gone through all the stuff they got from the BBI archives, much less catalogued them.

Yeah Mallon definitely confirmed having all three of the lost episodes and uploaded new clips to MST3K.com. I personally think this release has been planned for some time and they have a planned release date for K03 as well. But only time will tell.

Technical question... The update says to "just log into your VHX account" - and I don't know and where and how. I have a feeling I missed doing something months ago. (I backed the Kickstarter at the $200 Blu-ray level.)

VHX is the streaming service that they're using to deliver the digital rewards; an e-mail link with account setup instructions was sent out to all the backers late last year. Once you have the account set up, go to mst3k.vhx.tv/ and log in, then click "Browse" in the menu at the top. You should see "The #BroughtBackMST3K Bonus Collection" in the list of titles. Open that title, and the links to K01 and K02 should be listed at the bottom.

And there they were: the very first episodes of MST3K ever made." Final boxes, so that would suggest they have at least seen the inventory- though that doesn't mean there couldn't be things they missed or are mis-labled. I suggest that we bring up that Mallon used clips from K03 before and see if we can get a update on its whereabouts. I really would like if the full Green Slime pilot would be uploaded too, instead of the cam-ripped versions. Though I still want to push for special DVD releases.
