I found a copy of the Rhino DVD. Here the comparisons. The Rhino release really is better.

Look at Joel and Servo's heads in the theater segments of the Rhino release - there's some scan lines present. Maybe Shout tried to deinterlace or detelecine, and it caused the drop in quality.
As interesting as this is, I'm not personally bothered by it. Both Vol 3 releases are close enough in quality for my tastes.
In fact, it's kind of funny discussing this given the terrible quality of many of the movies they used, and the low budget feel of the host segments. MST3K was the antithesis of high quality visuals. That said, it's definitely still interesting to see the differences between releases.

Well, good thing I bought all the Rhino releases back in the day. The quality seems to be notable judging by the screens.
Still... could be worse. We could get the terrible mess that Quantum Leap fans got with their DVD and Blu-rays.
First they removed the music they didn't want to pay to license, and now it's in the blu-rays, but the quality of the transfer is... not good.
Film grain, dust, cropping errors, color issues...

I'm hoping they'll port the Rhino version over and issue a replacement. I like Shout Factory a lot, but I can't believe how much they screwed this one up.

Shout has never bothered to issue replacements, so unfortunately, there might not be any hope for a replacement on Sidehackers either.

I wouldn't have guessed. Well, for what it's worth, I did ask them on Facebook so we'll see what they have to say about the issue, in terms of re-issuing the disc if another (non-Rhino, unless they choose to use that as a last-minute option) source is found.

They also issued a replacement of Halloween 4 in the complete collection set. Although that replacement actually wound up coming from Anchor Bay's stock.
I highly doubt they'd do one for this though.

Honestly, if Shout ever considers re-issues for Mst releases, i'd love to see any re-issues for pre-volume 21 episodes that lack the "Turn down your lights" or "Reel 1" cards.
There's also the issue with 2 episodes missing their MST hour wraps.

What was wrong with their Weird Al Show release? I don't think I ever sent off for a replacement of that- and that set is OOP now.

If you watch episode 11 The Competition the audio constantly cuts out during the episode. It's impossible not to notice.

I just recently watched Pod People on the Shout re-release of Volume 2 and the picture quality looks absolutely horrible compared to the bootleg copy I own. I don't know how the Rhino version looks because I've never owned it, but criminy! The Shout version is almost unwatchable for me.

I think the problem is with the master tapes deteriorating, Shout has digitized remaining episodes that haven't been released by them (cause we were all giving them crap about Lost Continent and Beast of Yucca Flatts). That's why a lot of episodes probably look blurry/pixelated. Take my assumption with a grain of salt.

it's a bad transfer, plain and simple. in the case of pod people, it looks like they combined two sources (primarily a new digital transfer and part of the old one that was on the rhino dvd) to patch up one spot that was corrupted and just dumped it on to the new dvd.

That makes sense. Oh well... I'll try not hold it against Shout because I'm impressed with almost everything else they do. I'll have to check out their re-release of Merlin's Shop of Mystical Wonders. I've heard it looks better than the old Rhino version, which was so dark you could barely see anything.
