A good reason for me: captions. As a non American and a non English language native, MST3K unsubbed is frequently hard to follow for me because it's so busy (and because the poor sound of some of the movies). So the Shout! releases and re-releases that include captions are the ones I'm interested in. Pity it's not all of them. It can be hard for us native English speakers. I really appreciate the subs, too.

it's very blurry but not to the point that you can't tell what's going on. "unwatchable" is an exaggeration. (it's still pretty bad though) Easily the worst print of any MST episode that is commercially available. I stand by "Unwatchable".

Even worse than Lost Continent from season 2 on the Volume 18 DVD set?

Shout! has confirmed that the low sales of the re-releases is what prevents them from investing in new extra features or commissioning Steve Vance posters. I don't think that's true. I'm sure that Shout! mentioned that they weren't going to do Steve Vance posters when the Volume 1 re-issue was released or announced. They had a reason behind why, I just can't remember exactly. I believe their reasoning behind why was due to how Rhino packaged their volumes before Shout! took over.

Prior to volume 1, Shout projected lower sales because fans who buy MST3k would have already bought the reissues. At some point after they had started with the reissues, they confirmed that sales were lower, as expected.

I have all the Rhino and Shout box sets. I can't speak of whether or not the slates are intact on each episode, that would take a lot of intensive work I don't have time for (but secretly wish I did!). If you want superior sound quality, Shout blows every Rhino release away in terms of audio. However, the ball was dropped several times as far as picture goes. While every other episode has superior image quality of the Shout DVDs, these are the exceptions (most are muddied or darker copies): -Sidehackers -Hercules Against The Moon Men (absolutely horrible. it has a strobe effect throughout, similar to Starcrash and Carnival Magic, and it's the worst home video release of any episode. downright embarrassing.) -Rebel Set -Beginning Of The End (the Shout solo release is not bad, but it has considerable more tape hits than the Rhino) -Parts: The Clonus Horror -Prince Of Space (what, did they decide at least one episode needs it's silhouettes to be un-viewable? it's sooo dark! They fixed Merlin, but then gave us this terrible transfer of Prince of Space. On the bright side, that set has Assignment: Venezuela without the timecode imprinted!) -Time Chasers -Overdrawn At The Memory Bank
8 bad transfers isn't too bad, but there really should have been zero. Still, all the Shout sets are worth the purchase, especially if you can find them around the $20-$30 range.

Question for those who own the re-release of Volume 8, how does The Dead Talk Back look since Shout! re-did it?
Are there still many tape hits?

The Dead Talk Back Shout re-issue gets rid of the really bad tape hits from the Rhino copy. I don't remember if they were all gone, but the really bad ones were absent.

For the remaining volumes (6-12), were there any extras or better quality transfers that made upgrading to the Shout versions worthwhile? I have all the original Rhinos, but I'm now on a completist kick.

For the remaining volumes (6-12), were there any extras or better quality transfers that made upgrading to the Shout versions worthwhile? I have all the original Rhinos, but I'm now on a completist kick. I never got around to doing A/B comparisons on 8-12; I'm cataloging what I have left to get / do with my MST3k projects, so that's something I'll be doing over the next month or so.
I can tell you that, as far as the transfers go, volume 6 had no improvements; by far the best release of "The Gunslinger" is the solo Shout release. It puts either volume 6 release to shame, you can keep that and throw away the other(s). As far as Shout volume 6 goes, there is one new extra "Shortsighted: An Interview With Film Archivist And MST3K Shorts Supplier Rick Prelinger". So whatever you value that at is what you should pay to get the Shout Volume 6.
With volume 7, "Prince of Space" and "Hercules Against the Moon Men" are BAD transfers by Shout. "Hercules Unchained" is fine but certainly not an upgrade. "Killer Shrews" is the big one -- according to the notes I have, both versions are kind of flawed, but ultimately, I found that the movie itself looked slightly better on the Shout disc. The host segments look slightly better on the Rhino disc, and the short looks best on the Rhino "Shorts" disc. Another oddity worth noting is that Shout has a completely different copy of "Assignment Venezuela" than Rhino.
I think that volume 11 is the one where Shout messed up; it's one of the "Spider" movies, from the SciFi era, a whole segment is accidentally black-and-white. Could be the one on volume 10.
