"Nobody calls him that. His name is Max. Just, just call him Max"
I thought it was pretty good for the first episode, especially if you compared it to early season 1. I think it will get even better as they get more experience.

I felt that once they re-established the premise, they were off to the races and it was the MST3K I remember. When it was over, I immediately wanted more and now the wait for the 14th somehow feels more interminable than it did when Joel first started talking about bringing the show back in 2013. Also, I saw that Tim Blaney, the voice of Johnny 5, is operating Gypsy, and that's pretty cool.

At the rate they're putting backer names in the credits, I probably won't see my name until the final episode. Mine starts with a D, and this one ended with the B's just starting. I'm assuming episode 3 is when my name will be put up. And if it is, I just realized I might be in the credits of MST's 200th episode. Oh boy! fingers crossed!

Loved it! It holds up to a second viewing. The song is just as good as I remember it being. I wonder if any of those monster figures will be the Invention Exchange Kickstarter rewards? Those would be holy grail! *Love* the Moon 13 station idents - it makes you feel like you're really watching a channel on some OTA network. I can always pick out Crow, but I still need more practice training my ears for Servo vs. Jonah. I also really liked the fan mail segment - I think we'll get a lot of the natural humor of Baron and Hampton when those are read.

I had high hopes for this venture and this opening salvo has left me with even more anticipation for the coming episodes. For me, it truly captured the vibe of the show while nicely incorporating new elements and the updated cast and crew. I also caught not one but two Prince-related riffs (RIP) and more than a few that retained the show's Cowtown/Midwestern feel. I loved the "Monsters Of The World" song and I'm greatly looking forward to getting more time with Kinga and Max.
The only criticism I would have - and it's minor - is that it did seem slightly overstuffed, but overall I am thrilled beyond repair.

It was good. Ok.
Faults are obvious and everyone else pointed them out. (what the heck WAS Gypsy doing in the theater?) I'll just add that it felt very rushed in the host segments. Except the song, everything else was very quick. Too quick.
And the episode itself is short. 90 minutes, but with 4 while minutes of credits!
The shortest episode this season is 86 minutes. So it'll be 82 after the credits are removed? That's nuts!
Overall, it was ok. Just ok. Judged against the rest of the show, I give it...B-/C+. Leaning more towards C+.

Also, I would like to note that in the opening credits to the show, Gypsy is in her old right-side-up configuration.
So...will she be switching throughout the season, or...?

My guess is the the host segments seemed more rushed because the first episode has an extended opening, or at least that's what I assumed. However I will say as not thrilled as I am about Gypsy's being twisted into basically and entirely different character.....I'm probably never going to like it. I will say other then a few rough edges I thought it was a good episode, I feel that Crow and Servo (though I'm not totally used to how much higher his voice is) are spot on, and Jonah despite being rather stiff in the opening host segment is actually quite good. I'm mostly quite impressed by the end result.

I've been watching the opening again, and the theme does feel like it's something that will be altered later, though I don't know to what extent.
On Gypsy being traditional in the opening, remember in the first segment Jonah claimed he tinkered with her to make her run on the ceiling. I'm assuming the opening was representing her when he first met her. Though that might change if they need her on the floor for whatever reason.
Also rewatched the opening host segment. I must say, Felicia's line about franchising the property and selling to Disney for a billion dollars SLAYS me. Really great line.

Saw the first episode earlier today (in my time zone), and I actually really enjoyed it. While some of the host segments felt a bit short, the new cast did a good job with the material. Patton and Felica played off each other really well and the song Jonah and the 'Bots did got into my head really fast (that's how I now they did something right). If I had a complaint, it's that they didn't mention how Crow and Tom got back to the SOL though it might be too early to call foul on that. The riffing on [RETRACTED] was a bit hit and miss at first, seeing as though this is their first effort things will be rough, but as the film went along the jokes started to land and some of them were very funny. I also liked some of the visual humor the 'Bots did, which allows them to be a bit more active with the movie.
Overall, I'm looking forward to what the new season has in store later down the road. I probably won't do a review of each episode though as that's honestly exhausting for me personally.

I loved it, and they really went out of their way to make it feel fresh while preserving the spirit of the original show. I believe they succeeded spectacularly. I don't mind them working Gypsy into the theater segments, or even her new voice, but I have no clue what she's "doing" in the theater. Maybe it will be explained in a later episode.
Opening sequence was a lot of fun but a little unorthodox, with the theme song interweaved with Jonah being captured (and talking over it), stopping and starting, etc. I guess a more traditional main title sequence will be used in subsequent episodes? Can't see them using that same opening every time.
I think my ONLY minor complaint is that the pacing of the riffing in the theater is just a little too rushed. I hope in subsequent eps. they slow it down a bit. In the Mike/Joel era eps. the riffing was almost conversational, but here it's like they're trying to throw out jokes as fast as they can. I get they don't want a lot of dead spaces, but sometimes their riffs butted-up against each other with no cushion between the riffs. I think this will smooth out eventually as the three of them relax into their roles, but if I had to nit-pick about something it would be that. Otherwise, funny as hell. I'm really looking forward to watching the next 13 eps!

Having now watched it twice, here are a few detailed thoughts: 1 I like the tone. It's very close to the original 2 Everything looks great in HD. 3 Agree with other comments. Riffing is too fast. I hope they slow down a little in the coming episodes 4 Gypsy is different. Not necessarily bad but definitely going to take time to get used to. 5 Kinga and Max have good chemistry already. Felicia and Patton already seem like a good fit 6 Jonah is fine. It will take time to flesh him out a bit. 7 Bots are good. Crow's voice in particular is a really good fit
Overall solid episode. Really looking forward to see where it goes from here.

Gotta say, the biggest feeling I had while watching it (other then bleariness because it was 3 am) was just the surreal nature of watching a new episode of MST3K! Love Patton and the band's little 'commercial' bumpers.

So here's the thoughts I have on the new season premiere, which I also posted on Tumblr:
Despite some minor reservations, I enjoyed it as much as I hoped I would! Here’s some of the thoughts and impressions I had: (And I’ll try not to be too spoilery)
-Right off the bat they’ve already nailed the cheap DIY feel of the original show, just with a bit more polish and larger scope. -Slightly disappointed that they’re filming it at 24fps instead of sticking with the shot-on-video look, but they probably did that to avoid “telecine jidder” when showing the movies, among other reasons. -Jonah’s character seems to get dropped right into the premise of the show and so far there’s little to nothing connecting it with the end of Diabolic. A little concerning, but I remember hearing how Bobo And Brain Guy will be returning as some point, so perhaps there’ll be more of a connection showing up later on. -New theme song isn’t half bad, and what little I’ve seen the new Mads so far (Felica and Patton), they seem too play off each other really well. -*deep breath* I LOVE CROW’S NEW VOICE!!! Hampton’s version of Crow seems to take from both Trace and Bill, the voice somewhere between both of them and the personality leaning towards Trace, and I totally love it <3 The new Servo is damn good as well, and most importantly he can sing like hell. -Yes, Crow and Servo’s arms work now! ‘Bout time if you ask me. -Not sure where I stand on Jonah right now, but overall he’s pretty good. He gets the job done and maybe I’ll warm up to him more as I see more episodes. -Gypsy, hmm, it’s gonna take some some time to get use to her new voice, but she’s not bad. Hope she gets more of a presence on the show this time. -Host segments range from decent to really good. There’s a catchy musical number, and also a segment involving Servo that fits right in with the old show. -The movie choice for the first ep is excellent and perfect riffing fodder. I also like seeing the widescreen shadowrama in the theater. -Jonah and the bots all interact with the screen a little more, I personally found it kinda cute. Vaguely reminded me of some of the sight gags from Joel’s Cinematic Titanic. (which I still think is pretty underrated) -Also the riffing is…pretty darn great to be honest! It’s a lot more rapid-fire then previous seasons and there’s hardly a dull moment. That said however… -I think the one significant issue I have (and apparently I’m not alone on this) is that the pacing & timing of the riffing could use some work, because much of the time it sorta feels like the riffing is a bit overstuffed. They’re saying riffs really fast and sometimes it’s difficult to match the jokes to what’s on screen, and sometimes the jokes come almost a little too early. Despite all that it’s still really good riffing, it’s not a huge deal for me but I just have to be a little more attentive when watching. Hopefully they’ll learn to add some more breathing room to the riffs as the season goes on. -Last but not least, the new ending theme is amazing. Seriously, it is epic
So overall, I think this is a rock-solid premiere for the new MST3K. Sure there’s lots of new things to adjust to, but there’s lots of ways this could’ve been worse and what I’ve seen so far is very promising.
MST3K is back, baby. Bring on the rest of the season!

I just finished watching the first episode, and I'm overall very impressed with it. The riffing was good, even though they packed so many riffs in one episode, it's hard to catch up on them, sometimes. (I did get a kick out of the "Sailor Moon" compliment. XD) I thought it was pretty cool to see Tom Servo fly around in front of the screen. It's also nice to see Gypsy chime in on the fun during the movie. The door sequence when heading into and out of the theater is neat. All in all, I'm looking forward to the rest of the season!
