Gotta have my movie riffing, Shout. I'M GETTIN' THE SHAKES, MAN! THE WAIT FOR 39 IS TOO LONG!
If you were to ask me what Shout should have done after they ran their course on classic Mystery Science Theater, my gut reaction would have been "Cinematic Titanic, obviously." I would have pictured them releasing four episode volumes like MST, but them releasing all of it in one to for the price of a volume works too. It's probably preferable, since I already own all of these features on DVD already. But I suppose those can be collector's items now, while this fairly compact set can be the real meat and potatoes when I'm in a Cinematic Titanic mood.
This isn't a traditional volume of MST per say, so it's unfair to expect it to be treated like one. There are no retrospectives on the films themselves, which would have been welcome. I'm more than a little curious about some of these monstrosities. Instead it's a celebration of the project that reunited our beloved comedians, which is understandable.
One disc one is an retrospective by J. Elvis Weinstein, as he talks the genesis to ending of CT. It sounds like J. Elvis was the backbone of the shows, contributing a lot to helping each show come together.
I would have thought Joel would have been available for an interview as well, but alas he isn't to be found outside of a vintage features called Between the Riffs, featured on disc six. I'm pretty sure this is on one of the CT DVDs but I'm not sure if I've ever watched it. It's a delightful behind the scenes interview feature with Joel, J. Elvis, Mary Jo, Trace, and Frank. It's not as in-depth as the earlier interview, but it's a great inclusion.
I'm going to try to make my way through these twelve productions within the week. It's busy for me, with a ton of family and friends plans, a new Rifftrax show, and The Defenders dropping on Netflix soon, also upcoming are the blu-ray sets of Ash vs. Evil Dead and Walking Dead allowing me to finally catch up on those shows (Ash vs. Evil Dead is OBVIOUSLY the more important of the two...and well, more important than ANYTHING really). Plus with the passing of Haruo Nakajima I've been reliving his memory with old kaiju features. My free time isn't very free anymore.
However, I haven't seen these shows in years, and since CT is my favorite post-MST project (maybe even more so than the revival), I'll make room for it. Might pop in Oozing Skull when I get home from work tonight.
Set sail on the Cinematic Titanic!
"I'm gonna sink this bitch!"
