Just got my copy of the Vol 7 re-release, and I'm happy to report that (apparently) the master tape for the Assignment: Venezuela short has been found! The shadowrama has some visual issues and there's some tape hits toward the end, but despite that there's no time code and the video & audio quality is greatly improved from how it was on the Rhino set. I'm wondering that if they were able to find the master for this, then maybe they also could've found the lost Mylar short, but I'm not holding my breath on that.

That's really good to know. Now.... If they can just find the master for K03....
On the subject, when you play Hercules Against the Moon Men, does the slate card still cut to black suddenly as it plays like it did on the Comedy Central airings?

The MST Hour Wraps are missing. Again. Sigh.

Pardon my lateness, but unfortunately it looks like the episodes don't have any slates on them. By the way, here's a comparison of Assignment: Venezuela from a Youtube upload and how it looks on the new DVD:

I'm beginning to think Shout just took the original Rhino DVD copies from volume 7 and just dumped it on the new one. There are some things I can be forgiving with with Shout. This is not one of them.

The thing is, the episodes ARE different between the Shout and Rhino versions. The quality is usually worse due to the years-long gap between releases and that degradation of the master tapes.
Perhaps the slates aren't on the masters? Maybe there's different versions of each master tape for each episode?
Or...whoever edits the releases for Shout just doesn't care and removes them because they don't know any better.
The MST Hour wraps is the biggest thing. The inconsistency is baffling. They SHOULD know better, but they have to be reminded each time.

In fairness, Shout's been using the Masters that have the slates since 2011. I'm already assuming volume 6 had the slates for Gunslinger and Teenagers from Outer Space, so I dunno if they just kind of rushed this one.
And yeah, it is annoying that they have to be "reminded" now.

By the way, here's a comparison of Assignment: Venezuela from a Youtube upload and how it looks on the new DVD: One wonders if they didn't just rotoscope the silhouettes from the dodgy timestamped version of the short and put it over a better sourced copy of Assignment Venezuela? I'm not complaining, I think it looks good!

The thing is, the episodes ARE different between the Shout and Rhino versions. The quality is usually worse due to the years-long gap between releases and that degradation of the master tapes. I find that Shout!'s transfers are generally better from a technical perspective, in that Rhino's transfers tended to have pixellation artifacts and the like. But yeah, the analog source material is degrading with every passing year, and some of Shout!'s releases reflect that in sometimes alarming ways. Not a whole lot they could do about that, although I certainly hope they've completely digitized the entire tape library in uncompressed files by now.

Woah, is it just me or is the black level on Prince of Space WAY off?

So much for being better on a technical level.

Well they just straight-up botched Prince of Space. It's as dark as Rhino's Merlin disc.
