I bought the DVD. $47 for 14 eps and a documentary was too good a price to pass up. Plus I'm a more relaxed and patent viewer when I own, as opposed to renting or subscribing to a site to watch shows and movies.
The Doc? Though it was mostly filled with self congratulatory positives, I did like the behind the scenes material. However one word keeps popping into my brain now that I've seen it... "excess". There's so much, and it's so slick. For example, look at the bots. All those puppeteers, the voice actors standing to the side... all those cooks in the kitchen and all the extra stuff they can do (fly, move arms) and yet they don't have anywhere near charm and personality of the old Schoolers from the first 10 seasons.
Still, it's a nice set to have. Most of my opinions have stood on these second viewings. A few changes - Reptilicus, while not the best, was a little more fun this time out. Avalanche got me worried because it was good, but not great as I remembered... then the actual avalanche happened and it got hilarious... so, "phew" glad that happened.

I had the set for awhile because I backed the Kickstarter at a certain level, but I only just sat down to dig through the extras. One interesting moment in the doc was when Joel mentioned that it bothered him how the Satellite of Love got turned into a spaceship during the Sci-Fi era (or at least Season 8), though he acknowledged that this was driven by the network mandate for a story arc.

My blu-ray set was a Kickstarter reward, because I knew if I let tlthose collector's extras slip through my fingers I'd never forgive myself. Really enjoyed the documentary, though I struggle to remember the rest.
One disappointment I had was that there were no extras related to the movies themselves. I really enjoy those and hoped there would be some good ones for this batch.

at what level was the reward?
And yeah, I would have liked a few of those movie extras... especially for Carnival Magic

The documentary was the centerpiece. Most of the other extras were archival stuff like Turkey Day bumpers and clips of the telethon. I'm forgetting stuff, but that's the gist of it.

$47 for 14 eps and documentary on DVD? Didn't I just spend $99 for a pre-order on that? Can anyone explain this?

Amazon sometimes sells things at a loss to attract buyers as loss leaders.

If you're referring to the Kickstarter set, the a la carte price for the DVD was $80, Blu Ray $100. Those people got it several months earlier and the eight disc has more bonus features than the general release one, which only contains the documentary.

Well, I bought mine straight from the Rifftrax website. I'm glad to own it, but somewhat miffed at the price discrepancy. $47 instead of $99 is substantial! And it was touted as a special "pre-order" deal. Gives one the impression that you're getting a bargain of some sort.

When you compare it to the standard Rifftrax price ($10 per episode), $99 is a bargain for 14 episodes. Plus, you get to know the money is going to the guys rather than a faceless corporation. It's like spending more to get something at your local record store instead of Best Buy*
*In this example, local record stores still exist and Best Buy still sells CDs.

The files Rifftrax offers are in HD, so it would be more accurate to compare the price to the Blu Ray set, which I've seen for $66-$75 on Amazon with a MSRP of $99.

HD doesn't matter to me on a show like this. So I was happy with DVD, it looks fine. But yeah, I pre-ordered with Amazon, and they give you the lowest price. So even if you ordered it at $60 or whatever, you'd get it for $47 by the time it's shipped. Oh, and 'zon isn't faceless to me, I know people who work and toil there (I live in the area).

Like you, I didn't want to shell out the extra bucks to upgrade to HD or Bu-ray. All the episodes of the original show I own are in DVD format so I didn't see the need to spend extra money just for the new season.

Mine arrived a couple of days ago from Amazon. Been bouncing around it and I have to say that they play much better than upon my first watch-thru on Netflix. Especially with later episodes in the season, I almost forget I'm not watching an old ep until the non-theater stuff comes up.
