If it leads to a more confident product then I’m up for a shorter season, I mean one issue with season 11 (as much as I did genuinely enjoy it) is that if felt like it lacked confidence at times. Given how this is their second season back maybe if gives them a better chance to put their best foot forward.

As far as the movie from within the last 5 years, I'd say it's probably Neil Breen's "Fateful Findings".

Cutting down the episodes to six might allow for more time on each episode given the schedules of everyone involved and produce better episodes as a result. I choose to remain optimistic about it.

So less episodes and the reason given is that people binge watch... and they're asking for more $$$ despite a deal with NETFLIX? Something about that rubs me the wrong way... Joel isn't asking for $$$ to fund this new season, that money is coming from Netflix.
What they are doing is offering people the chance to get involved with season 12 in a similar manner to what happened with season 11. Some fans wanted to see another crowd funding campaign but this isn't on the same scale compared to the season 11 campaign since there aren't nearly as many rewards this time around. This pledge drive is offering chance to be a producer, get one of the Tom or Crow puppets used in the season or get your name in a "special thanks" section during the credits. Besides that it's the chance to get a collector's boxset or digital copies of the episode, a new poster and a tote bag. My guess is that most of the funds that'll be generated by this new pledge drive will go towards the production of those items, so the cost of them will (hopefully) be lower than what the prices were for the items during the season 11 campaign when they were offered as add-ons.

Half as many episodes is okay by me. I liked Season 11 overall, great talent and creativity behind it, but the frenzy of shooting 14 episodes in such a short production time certainly showed in its weaker moments.
Of course, I dislike binging MST3K. I like watching one episode a week or so... maybe I'll simply put on all of Season 12 in the background before I actually watch it so that Netflix will receive one of those little 'pings' that the show is doing well by whatever metrics they're using.

Okay...so...
6 episodes isn't much...but...it could be viewed as quality over quantity...

A film from within the last 5 years?
*Thinks*
Jupiter Ascending?

If 6 episodes per season means at least 6 episodes anually. Or if things get going, perhaps two seasons a year I can live with it. Let's hope , like say stranger things, episodes are not cut for time , run the whole movie plus segments
Also with a shorter season, quicker turn around will be nice, let's hope for turkey day 2018!

I'd be fine with six episode seasons, IF we got two seasons a year. Producing and releasing episodes in smaller doses makes a lot of sense for quality and keeping interest in the show up all year... but if we're looking at only six episodes total per year going forward, I am a little disappointed. Between this and finding out Doctor Who is going from 12 or 13 episodes plus an Xmas special each year, down to ten episodes INCLUDING Xmas special this year, I am seriously bummed out. Life sucks, I need more entertainment than ever, not less. As for them doing a movie made in the last five years, I'm actually not against it, depending on what it is. With more modern cheesy movies, there's often the problem of the movies being too graphic (either in a gory or sexual way) for MST3K, or the issue of them being intentionally made bad which is less fun, but a movie that's a good candidate for the show shouldn't be ruled out just because its too recent. Back when MST3K started in the late 80s and early 90s, they'd sometimes show movies made in the 80s, and towards the end of the original series's run in the late 90s, they were sometimes doing movies like Future War or Time Chasers that were from the early or mid 90s. In hindsight the old show feels like all old movies, but some of them are only old looking back at them now.

While I can see how 14 eps could be difficult (considering how they were filming them), for me Carnival Magic was a gift from the Gods, and I enjoyed the Christmas ep... so I can't really complain about length of the season.
6 is less than I expected, but its quality rather than quantity that decides whether a season is a winner or not. If I only like 3 of the eps, then yeah that'll suck. But if it's like Season 7 where it was all pretty damn good...
For fan requested flicks, there's Gymkata. For the movie released in the past 5 years, it could be one of Netflix's crappy originals (and/or those movies that have sat around a while that they picked up)

This new update today feels like the plan might be to see more frequent shorter seasons, which would make sense with how Netflix has been releasing half seasons of things recently (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Arrested Development both just had half seasons released, with their seasons being concluded in 2019). For a show like MST, if they're planning something like this, it make sense to just call each half a new season. I wouldn't be surprised if we get a new season this fall, and another one some time in the spring (although the tour plans might complicate a spring season...)
If we get to a point in the next year or so that we're getting two six episode seasons a year, that seems pretty ideal.

I'll never be unhappy at the prospect of getting more MST3K. If I could go back in time, even a few years and tell myself that we'd get twenty new episodes over the course of two years, I wouldn't have believed it. Still, I can't help but feel a little let down by the scant episode count this year, compared to the big season last year. I hope they're all gems. As for the "one's five years old or less" and "one's a long-time request" teases... I'm thinking Sharknado and Plan 9. Sure, Rifftrax already covered 'em, but I'd still welcome them to the MST3K canon all the same.

I do like the idea of the pledge drive, though. Maybe Pearl and Brain Guy should come out and sing "Loving Lovers Love" during half-time.

As for the "one's five years old or less" and "one's a long-time request" teases... I'm thinking Sharknado and Plan 9. I really hope it's not Sharknado. MST3K has been doing genuinely cheesy movies for the past 30 years and stayed clear of those that are intentionally bad, meta, winking at the audience. You know, Samurai Cop as opposed to Samurai Cop 2.

I'm actually glad we're only getting 6 episodes for season 12. If it means they'll have more time for writing and shooting the episodes, I'm all for it! It's less risk on NetFlix's part too, so getting a season 13 might be easier as a result.
The "long-time requested" film has me very excited! Could it be THE GIANT CLAW, THE GREEN SLIME, or KILLDOZER? I'd imagine they're going to steer clear of titles RiffTrax has done (Which is a shame, because I really want to see them riff STARSHIP INVASIONS, NIGHT OF THE LEPUS and PLANET OF DINOSAURS). As for the "within the last 5 years" I'm at a loss... I don't keep up with modern bad movies.

I hope they don't do plan 9. They choose not to originally for sound reasons. From the MST3K FAQ on satellite news;
Q: So how come they didn't do "Plan 9 From Outer Space," which is touted the worst movie ever made?
A: BBI said that they did not want to do this movie for several reasons. First, the voice-over from Criswell would interfere with the commenting that Joel/Mike and the 'bots would make. Second, making fun of this movie is just too easy. Everybody has done it. The Brains would prefer fresh territory. Third, it's kind if redundant: The movie really makes fun of itself. Also, while "Plan 9" is certainly awful, MSTies know better than to think it is the worst movie ever made. MST3K has unearthed several cinematic train wrecks that make it look like "Citizen Kane."
