I checked the movies I wasn't familiar with up on IMDB. I want to say I want to see the episode of The Day Time Ended NOW! That sounds like a really fun one. Also Lords of the Deep features Priscilla Barnes? I'm all in on that.
One minor note that I think nobody has commented on: this season is subtitled "The Gauntlet." It sounds like Kinga is pushing thes movies on Jonah all at once! Pretty fun idea for a binge-a-thon.

I'm very pumped for Ator most of all.
I'd also like to chime in that Atlantic Rim is indeed a straightforward bargain basement ripoff and not a spoof or intentionally bad type of film.
Gotta say; I like the balance of films here. We have three films of the ilk that would've always been on MST3K, one well known 'cult classic' bad movie, and one newer Asylum film. It's reaching out to be a bit more accessible but still keeping one foot firmly in what they've always done well.

As for there being an Asylum movie, it certainly not my favourite choice....but at the same time it all comes down to the quality of the riffs, I hope it fares better then the rifftrax takes on the Sharknado movies. Either way I’ll be keeping an open mind, and some of those others are far more encouraging!

I'd also like to chime in that Atlantic Rim is indeed a straightforward bargain basement ripoff and not a spoof or intentionally bad type of film. I'm really glad to hear this. Like I said before, it has been a good while since I saw it. I didn't remember it being AS intentionally garbage as some Asylum movies I've seen, but I couldn't be entirely sure. I was actually thinking of looking it up and watching it later to get a better idea how I felt about the choice. With that said, it's still gonna be a little weird (but also kinda neat?) seeing the first CGI heavy effects film on MST3K. We've seen them riff on guys in cheesy costumes, crappy hand-puppets, stop motion and claymation... but this will definitely be new. I'm crossing my fingers that the episode not only turns out good, but that having a much newer movie on MST3K gets a few new viewers to give it a shot.

My issue is more that I prefer seeing movies that haven't been riffed before. I've had that preference all the way back to Cinematic Titanic (and I assume if I were a fan during season three I'd have grumbled about seeing the Sandy Frank films a second time). Wizards at least had the virtue of the Rifftrax version being pulled after a few days, so I hadn't seen that one. The Rifftrax version of Ator however is pretty good. It's no Cave Dwellers, but I'm not chomping at the bit for an alternative riff of it. And in an abbreviated season, seeing a movie that has been "done" before kinda stings. If we got another fourteen episode season I might have shrugged though. i get it. I can't say I'm a huge fan of when other riffing enterprises do their take on something the original MST3K already covered. That said, I have to admit CT's version of Santa Claus Conquers the Martians and Rifftrax's version of Manos definitely had some great moments. But all things being equal, I'm with you: I'd rather they come up with a fresh movie to include in the MST3K canon. Then again, since I haven't yet seen the RT version of Ator, I guess it will be fresh to me...

I'm really excited to see what they do with MAC AND ME. That is one of my favorite "so bad it's good" movies for several years now. That and ATOR are the only two movies I have seen from the announced episodes this season. After doing some research, THE DAY TIME ENDED and LORDS OF THE DEEP appear to be perfect fodder for the show.

Thinking a bit more about how short these episodes are, and decided to look up the ACTUAL runtimes of each movie.
MAC AND ME - 95 min. / MST version - 81 min. (Difference = 14 min) ATLANTIC RIM - 85 min. / MST version - 80 min. (Difference - 5 min.) LORDS OF THE DEEP - 77 min. / MST version - 78 min. (Difference = 1 min.) DAY TIME ENDED - 79 min. / MST version - 82 min. (Difference = +3 min.) ATOR - 98 min. / MST version - 82 min. (16 min.)
Seems like clearly Joel & Co. were targeting a brisk 80 min. total runtime for each episode. Still, with the exception of the first and last eps., the other movies are more or less in the 80 min. runtime neighborhood uncut, anyway. But considering we have main title, host segments, and end credits to factor in...that means a TON of cuts must have been made to MAC AND ME and ATOR! So help me, if they cut the McDonald's musical number from MAC AND ME I think we should bring a class-action lawsuit.

The amount of hard editing to the movies last season was particularly distracting, and detrimental in some instances. It looks like its only going to get more severe.

With the exception of the sudden end to Time Travelers, I didn't find any editing distracting at all.

With the exception of the sudden end to Time Travelers, I didn't find any editing distracting at all. I didn't notice any major editing issues either. The only times I could tell something significant was missing were in Land That Time Forgot and Wizards 2, and that's partly because Ardy told us what was missing at the beginning which made it even more obvious. ("Actually looks pretty cool, might've saved the whole movie... oh well!" ) EDIT: I've been thinking about it more, and I do enjoy the "liquid video spill" gag/explanation for why parts are missing when they need to edit the movies for time or content. I'm imagining if they were doing Sidehackers for the first time on the show today, they'd just have Ardy there to say "Let me see what spilled... Oh Jesus! Uhhh, yeah, this was probably for the best anyways..."

They also cut the closing credits from the films that had them. That shaves a couple minutes off in some cases. I lament we'll never get them making fun of end credits anytime soon. The episode credits ought to be shorter this season, since they don't have to list hundreds of Kickstarter backers this time?
Kind of a drag 90 minutes is considered "too long" these days. Are we eventually going to be loathing Netflix the same way Comedy Central and SciFi were loathed for their meddling with the show?

Deep down I really miss the closing credit riffs. I'm sure they were a pain, but they got really creative during some of them.
TUSK!

I'm a little bummed about the episode lengths, but I'm digging the list of movies. After watching the trailer for Atlantic Rim, I'm very intrigued by that episode. It definitely looks like an earnest attempt at making a quick cash-in off of Pacific Rim's success...which probably isn't that different from a lot of the older MST movies.
Regardless, episode lengths aside, I'm excited to see what this season looks and feels like.
