You can be disappointed in Joel all you want, but it's misguided. He said the version backed by fans would be free. And it was. This season is NOT backed by the fans, so you can't hold him to that statement anymore It's a bit of a bummer, but network interference of some kind is to be expected. Classic MST3K benefitted from several years of Comedy Central just letting them do their thing (as it was their small-potatoes network's notable show) and a few years of Sci-Fi letting them do their own thing (since the network's pervious regime had already greenllit two more seasons which they let run out). These were both happenstance, and in no way reflect how you can usually expect to make a show.

I do agree that any platform that they decided to move forward with was always going to step in for future seasons. That's just the way production and distribution works most of the time.
On the subject of a season arc, I'd say the season 8 arc failed not because of the format of the show itself but rather the production crew had no interest in it. It was something they were told they had to do, so they did it. They had no vision for it, they just did...something. The crew working on the Netflix series seems more keen on creativity, so if they want to nurture an idea for an arc I'd say let them try.

But "optimistic BoB3K" is like "the REAL Seymore Skinner" replacing "Armin Tanzarian."

I don't recall ever seeing him. Maybe you just saw regular BoB3K standing next to Diet Kolos and got confused.

...it's not so much pessimism as it is a reaction to most of the Season 12 news, which after a Season 11 that I ended up liking really quite a bit, just keeps coming up short in so many ways.

We're just a few weeks away. Maybe you're better off avoiding news that you might take negatively so you can take in season 12 with the possibility of enjoying it.

Update: checking on the BBFC website again for updates on the missing episode, and it looks like all of previously listed season 12 episodes were removed. Did some more searching, couldn't find them again.
Not sure what that means. I don't know if a distributor can ask for their work to be "hidden" from public view, or what.

I watched a few minutes of LORDS OF THE DEEP on Tubi, it's from Roger Corman and looks like a solid choice for this season.
I hope the writing this season is as good as the scripts for the live shows were!

One thing that occurred to me the other day about episode lengths this season: they aren't obligated to list thousands of Kickstarter backers this year. On the surface these episodes might seem shorter than last year's, but they're probably the same length once you take the mega credits out of the equation.

The arc naming appears to be a Netflix categorization thing. Instead of listing it as "Mystery Science Theater 3000" and grouping all the classic and new content in one place, they have "Mystery Science Theater 3000", "Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return" and presumably "Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Gauntlet" or they will include the 6 new episodes in the current "The Return" listing and instead of "Season 12" they will have "the Return" and "The Gauntlet".
The Shout home video releases will just be "Season 12".

I’d be really happy if 1205 was The Brain or Deathstalker II - they were really good movie choices for the live shows.

I’d be really happy if 1205 was The Brain or Deathstalker II - they were really good movie choices for the live shows. While I wasn’t fortunate enough to see the live shows, Deathstalker II always struck my as an odd choice given how straight up comedic it was, I mean the movie was basically a spoof on sword and sorcery movies!
