I've probably said this before, and it's likely that I'll say it again. But even with some just A-plus riffing from Joel and company, I have never thought of Manos as a good episode.
I won't call it bad. The sheer weight of fandom respect is enough to convince me that there's definite quality there, and like I said it has some great jokes, riffs, lines, and ideas (plus one of my favorite invention exchanges).
And yet, even in light of all that, the movie's just so unpleasant for me.

I think I've only watched the Manos episode twice in the last ten years, making it one of my least-watched episodes (although not one I'd consider a "bad" episode). I definitely agree that the unpleasantness of the movie makes it a tougher watch than most episodes. I also watched it too often when I was younger, when it was one of only 10 or so episodes I had access to, and because of that it's lost some of its luster.

Along the same lines, episodes that aren't necessarily WORST, but unpleasant enough that I refuse to watch...Kitten With a Whip. Such an ugly, mean-spirited film. I've probably only seen the episode in full twice. Probably myleast watched of all post-Season 1 episodes for me, I've watched Castle of Fu Manchu and Unearthly more often.

Similar to Manos, other beloved episodes I've never fallen for are the Eastern Bloc fantasies (422, 505, 617, 813). I acknowledge the goofiness of the films and the fine riffing, but those are in one eye and out the other for me.

Glad to see mentions of Kitten with a Whip and Starfighters. Sure, I rarely revisit some of the early not-quite-there stuff like Slime People or later not-quite-there-anymore stuff like Projected Man. But Kitten with a Whip and Starfighters -- those truly grind my gears.
I love the 'punishing' material like Monster a Go Go and Fu Manchu.

Why do you feel Kitten With A Whip is a mean-spirited film? It's a repressed 60s sex fantasy lol. I think it's hilarious. But just curious as to why someone would think it's mean.

Everyone in it is either hateful or an idiot. Its cynical misery porn and makes me actively uncomfortable. Anne Margaret is nuts. The supposed would-be Senator is a spineless idiot that does the exact wrong thing at EVERY turn, but what gets him in trouble to begin with is his patience and charity, which Anne takes advantage of. Its a movie with a dark, ugly vision of humanity and no amount of riffing can make me want to watch it. I think the worst part is that its a major Hollywood movie.

I wouldn't call it top tier myself, but I've always enjoyed it whenever I've watched it. I think the movie is fairly watchable too.
I think it's coming up on my "Next up" episode selection on my blog. As soon as I start that back up, I should be revisiting it. And that should be fairly soon, I think.

I don't think the Senator is spineless, I think he's enjoying what's happening. I just like laughing at horrible people, like It's Always Sunny.

The movie is quite enjoyable on its own imo. Maybe my love for Anne Margaret also gets in the way of that.
