I don't mind the bad movies if they're also cheesy, plus the old ones are so innocent. I watch MST3K late at night, so if I watch Monster a Go-Go and chuckle a few times and then fall asleep that's fine. What I don't like is the sleazy bad movies like Manos (very likely my least favorite MST3K), TISCWSLABMUZ, Hobgoblins. Blech.
Usually though, the thing that will put me off an episode is the riffing. I don't mind sparse riffing at all, I have no problems with Season 1 and I like KTMA a lot for its movie choices and fun improv feel to the light riffing. But, when the riffing is lazy or bad, I might not come back. The Sci Fi seasons are much worse at this. There are episodes where Mike and the gang just come off as lazy and sometimes mean spirited. I can't stand the Final Justice ep because roughly half of all jokes are making fun of JDB, calling him fat and talking about eating. And, not the character either, but JDB. Lazy AND mean spirited. Blech.
They also go overboard on single topics often in the Sci Fi years. I used to think Prince of Space was a funny ep, but on repeat viewings it really started to annoy me that half of all jokes are just Japanese culture jokes, many not very good or clever, just shouting out Japanese culture in a negative light, like bringing up tentacle porn, more than once. Blech.

My choices for are worst episodes are probably:
-Invasion Of The Neptune Men: Film's just boring and a lot of the jokes just boil down to nasty comments about how Japan sucks.
-Red Zone Cuba: The film was just that bad........no riffing could ever make it watchable.
-The Crawling Eye: Mainly because I actually think the movie's good.

Because I've watched more since I last commented in this thread, my least favorite list:
-Sidehackers is still number 1. I'm in the minority but the movie is just so BAD that even Joel and the Bots can't save it for me. First episode I couldn't watch all the way through. Joel's Sidehackers song is ok though. -Swamp Diamonds. Boring and forgettable. Only thing that redeems the episode is What to Do On a Date, which is one of my favorite shorts ever. -First Spaceship On Venus. Also boring and forgettable.
I get why Hellcats isn't popular but I do love it. There's personal reasons, since it's one of the first I owned on DVD. But I also love the musical 60s freakout scenes ("I'm losing my dignityyyyyyyyy"). I will say the host segments are probably the worst but I get why the episode relied on flashbacks.

The KTMA version of Gamera. Joel is completely alone in the theater, the riffing unscripted. There's long pauses between the riffs, and he has nobody to bounce off of. So much dead air.

Honestly, when it comes to my personal pick for Worst MST3K Episode... I'm not really sure. I would say any of the usual episodes that get brought up for such a topic (Robot vs. Aztec Mummy, Invasion of the Neptune Men, etcetera), but I'd have to say my personal pick goes to either Hobgoblins or Merlin's Shop of Mystical Wonders in the end.
Literally the only redeeming thing about Hobgoblins is the second host segment, and combine the fact that this is a movie that Mike Nelson thinks is EVEN WORSE THAN MANOS and the fact that Mike and the Bots are riffing on stuff that can basically be considered war crimes when it comes to relationships... Yeah, I don't see why the episode is as popular as it is. And don't even get me started on the petty reason as to WHY Pearl sends up the movie.
As for Merlin's Shop of Mystical Wonders... it's a horror movie that has Ernest Borgnine slapped on it in order to make it as kid friendly as possible. That alone should explain the problem with this episode. Did anyone at Best Brains CONSIDER WHAT CHILDREN WOULD THINK ABOUT THIS IF IT WAS THE FIRST EPISODE THEY WERE INTRODUCED TO? This was one of the first episodes I saw on Pluto TV when I truly got invested into the series in late 2020, and this traumatized me. Avoid at all costs.

Ironically, that was one of the episodes I grew up with on the Volume 5 DVD. LOL. Now if you really wanna talk about trauma and MST3K, the beginning of 812 screwed me up back........legit refused to lay down looking up for years because of that for fear of acid.
