I caught one of the KTMA Fugitive Alien eps once (on YouTube), and I'll say this for the Brains -- considering the fact that they were pretty much winging it back in those days, the riffing results weren't half bad at all.
Sure, the later seasons were worlds better, but for those guys to sit there in the theater and ad lib as many funny riffs as they did was quite the accomplishment.

The singular thing I gained from watching only parts of a few different KTMA episodes (i was TKOd in the early rounds of every attempt) was the appreciation of the evolution of the show I still hold today. The quick turnaround from those episodes, on through Season 1, and to E1 of Season 2 is nothing short of remarkable and worthy of awe.
So imo it's at least worth the effort to go back and hold the acorn of the old giant oak it grew from; to see from what and where these writers/creators developed the show as most know it; to understand on some level the amount of love and work those people put in to mine your favorite episodes out.
But I never thought much of the acorn.

I need to get out my old set.
What I'd really like is a master torrent or archive set of the best of the best examples.
My set for KTMA was the Lee Lovingood version, but now there's mst3kguy and Cheesyflix... it's hard to figure out which ones offer the BEST quality for your buck.
(Obviously, I've bought all the official releases.)
I really like some of the fan projects people have made to, like versions that splice the original film back into the mst version. That was always a great thing Rhino did with a few of them and it's a shame it wasn't in more of them.

Personally, my favorite KTMA is a tie between SST Death Flight and Phase IV.

Personally, my favorite KTMA is a tie between SST Death Flight and Phase IV. Phase IV was pretty good. So far for me the worst was Cosmic Princess.

Of the KTMAs I've seen, I'd say "SST Death Flight" is my favorite. A good combination of a highly-riffable movie and good lines in the theater.

But I never thought much of the acorn. Funny, but I like acorns. Plentiful, nutritious, chewy. Some varieties are difficult to digest unless you boil them first, but then you also made a beverage for imbibing or fermenting later. Don't drink on the same day that you eat them, of course, because then you've done your body no good. Ahem. As for me, perhaps the KTMA episodes aren't quite the same as the later episodes. My favorite, which I mention here because the poll is closed, is The Green Slime … because I am a person who often enjoys seeing the alpha or beta versions of computer games — especially for the differences and the what–could–have–been. TGS has a very different premise, for those who've never seen it: Joel is visiting the Earth from his satellite, and is watching and riffing the movies voluntarily. I wonder what MST3k would've been like if it never had the Mads as the nemeses…

I saw a detailed fan comparison on a private torrent site which leads me to believe that neither MST3kguy nor Cheesyflix are definitive. I don't remember which is which, but the one whose recordings have fewer generations also has a more cropped picture. Neither one has a significant advantage, and while I always say "Don't pay pirates", in this case I can say that I honestly don't think either one has quality worth paying for. Oh, but if you don't know, KTMA 1 & 2 are available in quality copies, originally distributed digitally as a Kickstarter reward.

They didn’t have anywhere near enough time and money to do a better job writing during the KTMA era. I used to teach TV/Film production, one of the first things you learn is how much more time it takes to make a show than it is to watch it. KTMA was a cheap operation, they had to produce the show in something like a single day. If the ACEG book is accurate, they also had to do their regular jobs at the station, doing stuff like produce wrestling shows and cheap local carpet store commercials and such. ACEG says they were sometimes doing the riffs while seeing the film for the first time.
When they got to the Comedy Channel, they had a decent budget and could spend much more time writing and focus solely on the show, no more commercials for Henry’s House of Headstones. It’s a pretty long show, too, compared to most comedy shows that aren’t any longer than about 22 minutes long, MST3K is 90 minutes, that’s a lot of jokes to write in just a week or so, so that the did such a good job for as long as they did is pretty amazing.
I agree, Mike Nelson’s arrival certainly gave the show a boost which is reflected in how quickly he became head writer.
