Both episodes are considered to be the first great episodes of the show, and both are episodes that got people into the show. They even aired practically back to back. But, which is the better episode? Personally, I say Pod People is the better overall episode because it has great riffing AND great host segments. Idiot Control Now is an iconic moment in the show.

Well, I haven't seen either episode yet. So... the better episode is Ator.

Gonna second Pod People. It was the first Joel episode I ever saw, and I later discovered it was a really great episode for introducing other people to the show.
With that said, the moment in Cave Dwellers where Ator suddenly has a hang glider... that moment is priceless.

I love them both, but I'll go with Pod People. The "Idiot Control" host segment alone makes it hilarious. But Pod People seems a little more well-rounded, especially for someone seeing the show for the first time, I would think. Kids in a camper, rednecks, campy aliens and great riffing. Hard to go wrong.

Pod People for the win. Because I'm old however, The Mike Douglas Show send-up in Cave Dwellers has always been one of my favorite bits.

Cave Dwellers by a goddamn mile. But anybody who knows me already knows this. Alright I had to read a little too far to get to the first vote for Cave Dwellers here. Come on... I don't think it's even close. Everything about it is better than Pod People, which I think is one of the more overrated episodes of the series, tbh. It gets boring fast and the only real funny bits are when they break into Gary Numan's cars during the stop motion scene in Tommy's room and when Crow has Trumpy looking at Tommy's pets as food. There's just so much to Cave Dwellers that it holds up as well as any episode on repeat. The geometric nucleus, Jodie Foster's sister getting shot in the heart with an arrow drawing the "ah, she's in love" from Joel, the invisible cave dwellers, the scrawny villian ("it's brassy, it's sassy, a myoo-sical humdinger!"), his sorcerer ("you may call me Sandy"), the infamous hang glider scene which Tom sings to, pecs like melons and knees of fringe ("dingggggg... dong"), the extended back-story flashback (" this should have been the movie"), Thong wrestling fish out a creek - with Joel wondering what Ator is sitting on (it's weird!). I'm almost upset that these two are being put together.

I agree with the OP, these two are the first truly great eps of the show. I love 'em both, but I have Pod People at #10 and Cave Dwellers in the 25th slot (and they are the only eps from the first 3 seasons and KTMA to make my top 25). Pod is slightly better because it gets bigger, more steady laughs out of me, and the host segments are a hoot. The look on the Mads faces (for example) when the gang do their "magic things" skit, was priceless.

Cave Dwellers, would you expect anything less from me?

"This is the part of the film we like to call, 'She HAD to ask'." vs. "Morning comes to cheap, white trash." Hmm. Kind of a toss up with the edge going a bit toward Cah-vay Dwellers. More funny lines in that one, though the host segments for Pod People may be a bit better. Idiot Control Now, I mean, c'mon. But, "Son of Flogmar, Keeper of The Seven Keys of Fantoozler." I mean, c'mon. ("Then he worked out on the Charismatic Solo-flex of Zantar.") If you can look bored, and speak haltingly, you're in. In the famous words of Servo and Joel: "So, let's recap the action, shall we?" "Uh --- nothing, really."

One of these was my first episode, but it's been so long that I can't remember which. I give the slight edge to Pod People. "Idiot Control Now" pushes it slightly ahead.

Pod People, but they are pretty equal. Both 10-out-of-10 stars for me.

Well, I've seen both episodes now and I can say that I'm not really a big fan of either of them to be honest. They were both just kinda okay. I guess Pod People edges it out a little bit, but not by much. I'll have to rewatch them to get a better opinion. Until then, season 12's Ator still reigns supreme.

If someone handed me the two discs and told me I had to watch one, it would be Cave Dwellers. Both movies take themselves way too seriously and both have their issues, but Pod People takes it a little further into Annoying Land IMHO. I like Pod People, but long stretches of it are just tiresome for me. Back when I first watched that episode it actually took me two or three tries to get through the thing, where Cave Dwellers won me over immediately with its moments of sheer strangeness.
