Is it a slur to the people who actually have gypsy for their real name? Context is everything. Given how people find something new to be outraged about on twitter practically every 24 hours, it might have been better if Joel hadn't responded to them at all. Somebody else will find some other aspect of MST3K that offends them sooner or later. A colleague suggested to me a few years ago that Joel and the gang were a bit racist in their riffs on Gamera and Godzilla, but wouldn't elaborate further. I honestly didn't know about the deal with Fantasia, but the name was never spoken onscreen. And the people who think Disney puts sinister hidden messages into their movies would certainly have issues with old Scratch being in an animated film, so it's easier to pretend Chernabog is simply a devil, but not THE DEVIL.

Yeah, my childhood love of Ghostbusters won't at all be ruined by Gypsy's name changing or not. It also wasn't ruined by the new Ghostbusters movie with an all female core cast, despite the claims of many that it was ruining the franchise. Rebranding goes to some weird places sometimes. I honestly didn't know about the deal with Fantasia, but the name was never spoken onscreen. The first release of Fantasia did, in fact, have the narrator refer to him as "The Devil himself" before the Night on Bald Mountain sequence began. There have been numerous rereleases of Fantasia since then, though, that have edited the movie in various ways, and that line has since been removed in nearly every release. Disney covers its tracks well. And hey, almost no one noticed or cares! Rebranding can happen without mass fan backlash, it seems.

Recent reports from live shows say she is called "G.P.C.", which some fans have coined "Gypsy, Politically Correct" That's technically the name of her more puppet friendly version, which is attached as an extension to the normal Gypsy. There's a lot of things from this live tour that doesn't apply to the Netflix series so far, so I'm curious if GPC will make it's way into new episodes.

The only power words have is the context in which we use them. People never take the time to actually think about something like that. This is a really good point. It's nice that Joel is being open-minded to such discussions, but I don't think there's anything wrong with her keeping her name the way it is. MST3k is generally a "PC-friendly" show, that's one reason why it's great. I feel like the vast majority of people aren't even aware that gypsy is considered a slur. For example: I'm a huge fan of 60's songwriter Donovan, who has all sorts of folk songs that mention enchanted gypsies and the like... nothing offensive, just romanticized views of traveling people. I wasn't aware it was a 'bad word' until my current girlfriend informed me. I had only previously known that saying "I got gyp'd" was non-PC, I had no idea it went beyond that. It's just a show, we should really just relax.

As noted in the MST3K Live thread, I attended the Chicago show and at the robot intro where Joel plays an acoustic of the intro song, he calls out "Gypsy" and continues to use the name until the travel sized version appears and then he and the rest of the cast say "GPC". My guesses are either Joel was using this as a transition to the name, or that GPC is the travel sized version and Gypsy is the large version.

Great-Grandpa was adamant that we're shepherds but put my dad's side of the family in the sun for a hot minute and we'll pass for tech support like anybody out of the Indian subcontinent. As much as I'll get uppity about some instances of "gypsy" being used in pop culture with no regard I was cool with Gypsy and would be mildly disappointed if this became a thing. MST has always been pretty broad towards everybody and I don't want to illegally download their future endeavors knowing they compromised.

I'd be fine with changing the name back to Gypsum. The name was never meant to offend anyone, so if it does and the criticism is legitimate than its actively distracting from the intended spirit of the thing.
Keeping things going just for tradition's sake is stupid but it's easy to fall into and I have to remind myself not to fall into that trap.
