I don't know why, but I've been lately fixated on the KTMA episodes. I've actually watched a couple of the older ones (K02 and K04) a while back and I found them to be relatively enjoyable. Of course, you kinda have to grade KTMA episodes on a curve because of how early they are. But I didn't find them to be unwatchable or anything. But that's not the point! I've been thinking about K03 in particular, the lost episode. I feel like there has to be a copy of it somewhere, if Joel managed to dig up K01 and K02. Shout might not have it, but somebody has it. To maybe help out with anybody who's also interested in finding it, I put together a document detailing what we know so far about the lost episode. If I'm missing anything, please let me know and I'll add it to the document. I'm not sure how helpful this will be, but hopefully it will at least spark some interest in finding K03. I know it may seem like a lost cause at this point, but I'm remaining optimistic. Here's the document. docs.google.com/document/d/1tI1UIMSAP54sn-mojGTSzkUJ-RLVCWeH38lpGXrkic8/edit?usp=sharing

Hopefully somebody at one of the MST3K Live meet and greet Q&A sessions asks Joel and reports back what he says.

I hope so too. I mean, there's no harm in asking, right?

Jim did seem to be attesting to having all the KTMA masters tapes in the 2008 interview he gave to Satellite News, and the clip from K03 would seem to put beyond all doubt that he had that episode in his hands...at that time. But who knows what happened between 2008 and Shout!'s acquisition of MST3K. I mean, when K01 and K02 were unveiled, Joel described finding them in some "final boxes," suggesting that the BBI tape library didn't exactly make it to Shout's LA headquarters in a particularly organized way.
If there was some way to contact Jordan Fields, he would probably be more of an authority than Joel about the assets, which surely must have been collated by now. We still never got a straight answer about why the KTMA host segment compilation got cancelled aside from a vague reference to quality concerns. Regardless of their condition, it would be nice to know if Shout in fact has all twenty-one master tapes. We don't even know that much, and I don't get why.

I'm sure that someone, somewhere, has a VHS in a back room with that episode recorded on it without knowing what it is or that KTMA's old shows would be of particular interest to a huge group of people online. Sadly, this person, since they already don't know, probably aren't the sort to just happen across the information that might make them think "But, wait... *I* obsessively recorded TV off of KTMA back then! Maybe I should check for these people..."
One of the curious things about "lost episodes" and things like them is that they carry a certain amount of weight to them by being unknown. Did the tape get lost? Is it damaged in a way that'd make it impossible to retrieve safely? Is it in perfectly fine condition, and awaiting the day when they want to mobilize the fanbase for some project that might need an incentive? The truth is almost certainly mundane, but the fact that we don't know *which* mundane truth is true makes it so much more tantalizing. I hope we learn what it is someday, and someday soon, but I also kinda like that there's a huge mystery surrounding it.

The mystery aspect is kinda fun. However, out of all the lost media out there, this is the one that I want to be found the most. Again, I really like the feel of the KTMA era and I want to see another piece of its history. I've even had dreams about this episode being found. That just goes to show how much I think about it. Hopefully, somebody finds that tape and shares it with us. Until then, I'll keep updating the document.

It's probably something along the lines of, "I know it's here somewhere. I seem to remember putting it in this box. Or did I?" Or maybe it just got mislabeled. We've heard about long-lost films and TV shows located simply because somebody was looking in a random box and happened to find them. At least we know it was recorded, unlike a few of the CT shows. Unless some fan shows up with a bootleg copy of those, they're only memories.

There was recently a tweet sent to Joel asking about releasing K03 to the public.
However, his response seemed kinda rude, like finding this super rare episode that fans have been wanting to see for years just doesn't matter to him. Then again, this kind of behavior from Joel isn't really new to us.
IFC's schedule was recently updated to show that on April 11th, both Fugitive Alien 1 and 2 would be playing. They will most likely be the season 3 versions, but maybe this will be how K03 is revealed if it has been found. We'll just have to wait and see.

I can understand his reply, given that he'd just finished up a long and no doubt exhausting tour, and that the whole country is facing a major league crisis. I think he just figured there are more important things to deal with right now than looking for K-03. Maybe when things have calmed down and we're back to semi-normal, he'll be more even-tempered about it.

I guess that makes sense. I didn't even think about the tour. I just figured it was Joel being Joel again, judging by his recent Twitter posts. But I could see why he would stressed out right now and not find it important. He at least has replied to this tweet. So, he knows there's still demand for it. Maybe after the storm has passed, he'll try to find it again.

Maybe even a nod to the fact that episode isn't "lost" anymore--as in, at this point, all that would be needed to bring it to release would be busy work.

I don't know. I just kinda saw it as him finding K03 not being that important. But hey, maybe you're right and Joel didn't mean to be rude. And hey, maybe the episode has been found and he's just working to get it released. Maybe he found the tape and needs to transfer it again. It's possible. Since all we have of Mallon's transfer are clips, he could have just deleted it thinking it wasn't that important. All we can do is wait and see.

I've finally updated that document again, since it's been basically confirmed that Joel doesn't have it. It's sad, but at least we have some statement on it.
I still think that a tape for it could exist somewhere. I highly doubt that the master was destroyed or anything. It was probably just misplaced somewhere and nobody knows where it is. Even if we don't ever find K03, it would still be great to get high quality releases of the rest of the KTMA episodes. All we can really do now is wait and see, though. Or just get insanely lucky and find a home recording of it.
