I think this is the first time MST3K will be on basic cable since 2004.

Nice! I can't recall all the details but I remember much earlier in the decade they polled viewers about what kind of cult TV shows they'd like to see, and one of the options was MST3K. I'm no fan of IFC but it's nice to see the show back on cable, even if it's not exactly at the most accessible hour.

If I were a channel looking to fill a 1am to 3am slot MST3k is perfect. Unless I've seen it 100 times, I like to watch a movie from beginning to end. But with MST3k, you can really start and stop watching at anytime. Come home at 1:30, flip it on and watch for 45 minutes. The plots don't matter.

My guess is most cable channels find it more profitable to get paid to run infomercials after midnight.

I wonder if infomercials are getting less common. There are more and more channels out there. At some point, it would be more cost effective for a company which used to run infomercials to set up a website with the video and then put adds on platforms all over the place, youtube ads, etc.

Someone made mention that IFC and the horror streaming service Shudder share the same parent company, AMC Networks. Perhaps Shout! Factory (current owners of the “MST3K” IP) have quietly negotiated to air classic MST3K episodes on IFC, and then new seasons on Shudder? 🤔 That would be cool!

I had no idea this was happening. Imagine my surprise a few moments ago when sleep deprived me was channel surfing and suddenly the MST3K version of The Crawling Eye is on!

On February 8th, they list that MST3K is playing, but they don't have an episode name yet. Maybe they're going to start airing more than the usual six episodes they've been playing.

They updated the schedule and yes, they are going to start airing different episodes! However, they're gonna be playing a lot of season 1 episodes. So, yeah not the greatest episode choices, but hey it's at least something. I'm thankful to have MST3K back on basic cable at all. And this will at least give me a reason to rewatch some episodes I haven't seen in a long time. Here's what they're playing the next couple weeks. All of the times listed are in central time.
Feb. 1 - The Hellcats (5 AM) Feb. 8 - Women of the Prehistoric Planet (3 AM), The Crawling Hand (5:15 AM) Feb. 15 - Project Moon Base (3 AM), Stranded in Space (5:15 AM)
I also added a complete IFC broadcast schedule to my MST3K spreadsheet. The only times I'm uncertain about are episodes 101 and 102 on Jan. 11. Anybody know when exactly they aired that night?

I'm curious as to what IFC's end game is with this. Because as far as I know they're not doing any advertising on this and it's pretty much strictly all in the wee hours of the morning. And it's all really terrible episodes what is, I'm assuming, a cheaper package then some of the better ones that CometTV plays.
So I have to wonder if this is just them filling 2 hours or a test run for something later. I'm leaning towards the former, but why MST at that point and not just infomercials or something?

Aren't all the Comet episodes public domain movies? This is definitely a weird package of episodes.

Funny enough, there were originally infomercials scheduled for Feb. 1st, but they were recently replaced with MST3K. Personally, I'd take just about any MST3K episode over infomercials. Maybe they'll get better episodes eventually? If they're going to keep playing season 1 episodes, then that at least means that we should get Robot Holocaust and Moon Zero Two.
