Adam Schlesinger, co-founder of group Fountains of Wayne and writer of the song "That Thing You Do" for the movie died April 1st from complications of COVID-19. I was saddened when I heard this. Listened to them a lot in college. He was one hell of a songwriter. Pretty much anything he wrote got stuck in your head. Shine on, sir.

I lost my brother to Covid-19 last week. I look at the ridiculous protests in the US and I see signs like "Give me liberty or give me Covid-19" . Believe me, you don't want Covid-19.

The protesters are really making me sick. Toting their guns and waving flags and harassing medical care workers, and calling them "fake" when they stand out in counterprotests. Yes they're actually saying they are fake nurses and actors. Saying "Jesus is my vaccine". Holy sh*t. I read on some other forum that there is a joke going around in Germany: What borders on stupidity? Mexico and Canada. Can't even get mad at that. I'm embarrassed by what I am seeing. Of course the news always has to broadcast the sensational and the extremes on both sides. Show some POSITIVE things people are doing to combat this and how they are coping with it. We have no leaders in our country. Our #1 is giving guidelines for staying in lockdown and EASING into reopening in one hand, then in the other he's Tweeting giving praise for the protesters "liberating" states that are having them. I really want to shake him and tell him to start acting like a responsible adult and LEAD - by example - and to TALK TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE to ease their fears and reassure them and tell them what they could be doing now to cope with all this mess. Not arguing with members of the press when they ask legitimate questions and call them names like a bratty child. Not inciting division and unrest. Did you hear or read about the mayor of Las Vegas? Holy sh*t. What an as$hole. Let the chips fall where they may, I guess. Pun intended. OPEN the CASINOS???!!! I can't take the stupidity anymore. If only the stupid were the only ones affected by this. Again, not wishing this on ANYONE, but if people are dying why can't it just be the selfish and stupid and not the innocent bystanders? This species. IDIOT!!!

The phrase "It takes all kinds" comes to mind, only I can't take this kind. Hard to believe there are so many plain ignorant and stupid people in this world. Harassing the life savers is waaaaaaay over the line though. What planet did these people come from?

Hilary was right. Around 30% of people are deplorables. They are willfully ignorant and self absorbed. They want to hear what they want to hear and will actively ignore anyone who says something they don't want to hear. In good times you can ignore them. But when the times get tough they are dangerous.
Openly willing to let millions of people die so life is easier for you is deplorable.
Now the Republican's are talking about letting the states go bankrupt. The real purpose of that is to eliminate pensions and health care for retired workers. That's what is so frustrating to me. I wouldn't be surprised if several million retirees on red states will be losing their retirement income and health care in the next year or so. And the state government will say that its all the fault of the Democrats even though all three branches of the state government are Republican. And the depressing thing is that many of the people losing their pensions will still support the Republican party.

Do they even look at their past selves? I know both sides do it, but Fox seems to do it more.

Do they even look at their past selves? I know both sides do it, but Fox seems to do it more. Just say it like it really is. The other networks get things wrong and change their mind. But Fox has made an art form out of saying one thing and then saying the exact opposite. Sometimes in the same sentence. This is not against all conservatives. There are plenty of conservatives who have been consistent in what they say for years. Fox News is not in any real sense conservative. It's extreme right wing and will say anything to keep its base happy and keep making money.

Another scary aspect of this is the couple of meat plants that had to shut down because workers were getting sick.
Start planting those victory gardens, people.
All we need now is food shortages to add to the strain of this whole mess.

^^^^^^ So, here's something a little more upbeat.
I heard a bunch of cars beeping on my street earlier today. When I looked out the window, there was a parade of like 20-25 cars driving by with signs and beeping, they stopped outside someone's house further down. I believe it was someone's birthday. Pretty neat of them to do.

I find it so sad but unsurprising that people are willing to throw the lives away of elderly and those at the most risk of getting this virus for the sake of getting the economy going again. I mean, what's the lives of thousands of people so as long as the rest of us who won't be affected as bad can get back to doing what we were doing?

^^^ It's all about being comfortable, I guess, and not having to change one's ways. The economy is man-made and fake. We made it what it is, we can tweak it to something that works in extreme situations and emergencies like this. We could always put it back to "the way it was" when the emergency has passed.
The environment and PEOPLE'S LIVES, that's the real, actual world. Can't get that back once it goes. The problem with most of the human race is that if something isn't happening directly to them or someone they love, it doesn't feel real or immediate enough to them, so, hey, don't worry about it. Or it's fake news. Human lives are reduced to just numbers or statistics. So the people dying isn't real, just the them not getting paid or being able to just go somewhere and do stuff is (a legitimate concern, of course, but lives are more important).
Grrrr. I want to punch people.
Plus, they don't seem to get that the numbers aren't through. This thing is just starting and the number would be higher if precautions weren't taken. And they would go up if we just let everyone "go back to normal." Then we'd have to do this sh*t all over again, and perhaps for even longer. Might as well try to get it right the first time. How much of an economy do they think we'd have with so many people sick or dead and other industries having to close down even more?
Now is the time for that human spirit to kick in and for people to start inventing new ways to do things. Maybe the next big wave of creative enterprise can be better ways to keep things sanitary and better ways to test people and better PPE's and such. Better ways to do business with less contact. Even though less contact would be kind of a bummer for most things where people normally congregate like concerts and sporting events and, well, just walking around city streets. And public transportation. Eesh. We have our work cut out for us.
Wish I was an inventor.

A single death is a tragedy. A million deaths is a statistic.
Most people at a gut level count 1,2,3,4,5...a bunch...a real big bunch. They really don't see at a gut level the difference between 10 people dying or 100 or 1,000 or a million, if they don't know the people. If you're living in an epicenter and you've seen a distant relative die and a neighbor and the nice clerk at your local store die it means a lot more than 52,000 strangers dying.

I find it laughable that so many people are paranoid about "big government", yet they are perfectly willing to sell their souls to mega corporations. But these corporations are "people", let's not forget, that determine policy and get all the breaks. Corporations where the top tiers get all the profits and treat their employees as expendable nothings, and if God forbid they had to pay those employees decent wages (and we're seeing just how essential these "lowly" minimum wage earners in the service sector are with this pandemic and, hey, they actually keep the country moving), these "job creators" outsource those jobs for practically slave labor overseas leaving this country with even LESS employment. Corporations that destroy the environment and risk the lives of their employees with shoddy, half-assed "safety" measures, have dangerous work conditions because they can't be bothered with spending THEIR money on things to make things more safe, cut corners until disaster strikes, use toxic substances in food and products and screw their employees and the consumers - and some places without worker's comp and sick leave and maternity leave. Yeah, let's get back to those halcyon days, right?
And these corporations track people's every move and sell all their personal information and target them with ads and slanted "news" and such based on an algorithm. They have their fingers in all aspects of our lives, but don't let the gubment take muh frrRRReeeedom!!
Sure, no one wants all their freedoms taken away, and no one wants the government to dictate every little detail of our lives, but, holy sh*t, people, this has been going on for a few MONTHS! Not years! Calm the f*ck down! These are emergency situations. Lives of tens of thousands of people are at stake, more if these things aren't done right. And we still don't know everything about this virus. Why can't people be patient? You'd think this was year 3 or something the way some people are acting. Again, I know people need to get back to work and start having some money coming in, but give city, state and federal govts. a chance to get this thing in order. This isn't permanent, but it will go on LONGER the more people act like selfish dicks and put others at risk.
