They couldn't get the TV show people (or the first string theater touring people)? Or are they using these people (who I'll dub "The Third Stringers") because their tour was cut short?

Ehhhhh no. This is like watching a concert given by a classic rock band where there is one original member and it's the bass player who played on one album and tour before leaving. I do like the idea of re-riffing Season 1 titles though, just not with this crew.

I'll watch it, why not, where else am I going to go? HaHa - but yeah, if Joel's not riffing that's a disappointment. After all, hearing him riff again on the tour made it all the better IMO... speaking of which.
Someone on facebook expressed disappointment that the live shows weren't recorded, and Joel responded, "never say never" - well now he's just given me reason to hope.

Its the Beatles! But only Paul is in attendance, and he'll only be sitting backstage. And the band is some of the guys from Wings. But not the ACTUAL guys from Wings; their stand-ins when the actual guys from Wings called out sick. Not the ORIGINAL stand-ins, mind you, THEIR replacements.
But its totally the Beatles!

I think we might be at the point where dubbing something "MST3K" might mean absolutely nothing anymore.

Considering how many Beatles tribute band concerts I've been to, I'd actually probably be okay with that.

If someone asked me "so your a fan of Chicago, you like those 80's ballads sung by Peter Cetera?' I would say "NO NO NO the early Terry Kath years when the band had chops and knew how to kick ass" Kinda my allegory about how I've felt about the new MST3K all along.
Also a good Beatles tribute band (seen a few) is well worth the price as they are faithfully capturing an era and not guys dressed as The Beatles playing The Standells catalogue.

They're trying to do something amusing for people in quarantine?
Those bastards. How dare they?

I'm a bit confused by this. Why riff over an already finished episode, and why Moon Zero Two of all episodes? I know that this is all subjective, but I think there are movies/episodes from season 1 that deserve a reriff way more than Moon Zero Two. It was a good episode to begin with, and riffing over a riff just tells me that it's gonna be crowded with riffs and very hard to understand. Well, whatever. I'll be there just to record the thing, at least.

My guess on the episode pick and re-riff is that Moon Zero Two didn't have any rights issues, and with all the watch parties happening right now the concept makes sense. I'd presume they are rewatching an old episode on lockdown and because season 1 eps are so light on riffs that its easy to riff between the riffs.

I'm a bit confused by this. Why riff over an already finished episode, I would imagine it's quicker to write (assuming they won't be ad libbing entirely). They should get Joel to riff "This Island Earth".

I do wish they rounded up the Netflix cast for this, and while I did really enjoy the recent tour (which did see the tour through to the end, so no it was not cut short by the pandemic) I think it will confuse most people tuning in.
That has been one of my big complaints with the new era of MST3K. The lineup has never been rock solid at the live shows, and as mentioned the latest team is 100% no TV episode actors. So a lot of the excitement in seeing them live is lost, aside from Joel being there.
I did take note that the traveling Gypsy is doing the Sunday event, and they've named it GPC. Makes me wonder if big Gypsy is still Gypsy.

I noticed that too. Why do they need the portable Gypsy for an online event? I would hope big Gypsy is still around, but it's been a while since we've seen her.

I've also noticed that Joel has been relegating a lot of the plot to the live shows. The first Netflix era live show, the Watch Out For Snakes! Tour, was perfect. Big budget, nearly the whole TV cast, not tied too much to TV continuity so we could "just relax". For continuity fans, like myself, it could sit any time during season 11. Whatever.
The 30th Anniversary Tour was kind of a mess. The show itself was solid, but the story took place AFTER season 12 and yet Netflix aired season 12 after the tour. So the whole thing didn't make sense until after you saw season 12. So doesn't that make the 30th anniversary tour season 13? Oh wait...
The Great Cheesy Movie Circus Tour is Joel's season 13, but none of the cast from the TV show returns, nor do the previous tour cast. Despite bing a lot of fun and very funny, it felt cheap. Oh, and apparently Emily Crenshaw is the new host.
So that leads us into Sunday's show, which picks up from here. So basically, if you've only ever seen the TV show, this special will be very very confusing. haha
