I was at work but during a break I poked my head in. Maybe I hit a bad spot, because there were hardly any (new) riffs being made, and they seemed rather off the cuff instead of written to sound like they were.

I was kinda out of it while it was running, but wasn't part of the point that people were submitting riffs online while it was happening? I can see that leading to some dead spots. It was a "riff along" in the sense that viewers were contributing new jokes as well. (Unles I misunderstood and people were supposed to submit them in advance or something.) My favorite riff of the night was the one about the joke that transcended time. I usually don't like political humor but something about that one was just hands down perfect for me, probably since it was more about the timing of the joke both then and now.

I dug the special enough. This was the first I've seen of Emily March and these bots (I think? The bots could have been the versions I saw on the "watch out for snakes" tour?). Anyway, I really liked the Netflix riffing crew a lot (I mean, I was fans of 2/3 of them before they were involved with MST), but it feels like this group could be a bit better heir to the classic MST-vibe of old. Emily has a naive sweetness that reads like a cross between early Joel and season 5 Mike, and the bots' voices are pretty perfect. I might be a bit more excited than I'd otherwise be if this crew ends up being the future of new episodes.

I saw on MST3KINFO that Joel said if a season 13 happens, Emily Marsh would be the host. Makes me kind of sad given how short Jonah's run has been, and he still seems all in on the MST3K stuff with his after show appearance wearing his yellow jacket and performing the Every Country Has A Monster song.
Still, I'd be all for a season 13 with the LIVE crew. I especially like the new bots, much more unique voices. I really think they could do a lower budget show and have it run on Pluto TV or Shudder as original content. I still want a Season the 13th all horror season on Shudder with the return of Castle Forrester.

I'm pleased with the idea of Emily, Conor, Nate and Yvonne as the new cast, as they've all proven their chops. And I think this was in fact the ideal way to curate the future MST3K crew: finding talented unknowns and having them make their bones with a year on the road.
But why didn't Joel do this from the beginning? In retrospect it comes off as if he just used the Netflix cast as a booster rocket to get the MST3K reboot to escape velocity, and now that they've served their transitional purpose he's abandoning them for another, cheaper troupe. And that troupe is excellent, but it still looks like Jonah/Baron/Hampton got the heave-ho through no fault of their own, and that's a bummer.

I think those guys spent years and years doing touring stand-up and got to a point in their career where they could work a little more steadily and with a lot less commuting, so I don't know if I'd expect that they want to go back to the touring life anyway. Maybe it was more mutual than you give it credit for. I'm assuming that the "touring" side is part of Joel's overall plan to keep the brand profitable and continue generating some sort of new material.

It was a "riff along" in the sense that viewers were contributing new jokes as well. (Unles I misunderstood and people were supposed to submit them in advance or something.) I think that Joel posted something about submitting jokes in advance, that they would test some during the pre-tape run through, something like that. From the jokes I saw posted on Facebook, I can't imagine too many of the submissions were useable. It wasn't being written on the fly, let alone by the viewers.

Maybe it was more mutual than you give it credit for. I hope I'm just being pessimistic. But there were those comments from Hampton Yount about how he wanted to be involved with the 30th anniversary tour but couldn't because of "a money thing." It's hard not to draw the conclusion that the Netflix cast gradually became the casualty of some serious belt-tightening. I'm assuming that the "touring" side is part of Joel's overall plan to keep the brand profitable and continue generating some sort of new material. I don't think that's even up for debate, and I think it's a smart move on Joel's part. I'll go even further and say that I'm more excited about the future of MST3K now than I was during the height of revival delirium in 2015 when the Kickstarter became a runaway success. The extremely stripped down nature of the tours and this "Riffalong" livestream may partially be an artifact of business realities, but it also feels more appropriate for MST3K in a way that the highly "produced" nature of the Netflix episodes did not, necessarily. It also keeps the show lightweight enough to survive cancellation and adopt to changes of platform, as it always has. I think Joel is moving the brand in the right direction. But I think it's fair to lament that some talent seem to have fallen over the side as he steered the ship into what I hope is a better course for MST3K in the long term.

I thought it turned out OK, given how it was rather quickly set up.
