Kickstarter launches tomorrow: Dear MST3K Revival League, Hey everyone, it's Joel. I hope you’re all staying safe and well during the pandemic. I know you’re probably wondering why I’m writing, especially after so much time has passed since our last Backer Update. Well, it's because we have some BIG NEWS, and as one of the backers who #BroughtBackMST3K, I want you to hear it from me first: Tomorrow morning – after 6 years, 20 episodes, 2 seasons, 6 comic books, and 3 live tours – Mystery Science Theater 3000 is returning to Kickstarter to launch our next campaign. We've got some pretty ambitious plans, and I hope you'll be as excited about them as I am. I'll tell you a lot more tomorrow, when we launch. For today, I wanted to give all of you a chance to jump to the front of the line, so you'll have the first shot at our new rewards. If you want to get notified as soon as our new Kickstarter goes live, just go here and let us know. And before all the craziness starts, I just want to thank you again. Six years ago, thanks to your enthusiasm and support, we changed the course of Mystery Science Theater forever. And starting tomorrow, together, we'll have the chance to do it again.

cautiously optimistic. I have a few questions. Does Joel understand where he went wrong with the first reboot? Does Joel believe they went wrong during the first reboot? Will they go back to basics and stop trying to have million dollar special effects for a comedy puppet show?
If they are willing to spend more time and money on the writing and less on the production, I'm in. I'd like to see a bunch of core writers in the same room together with secondary writers working from the road. And I'd like to see the on screen people actually getting to practice their lines in person. The mads can just read their lines but the in theater part must be practiced to be good.

Hopefully if this Kickstarter proves successful, they can find a home that lasts longer than 2 seasons. A show can’t survive being propped up by Kickstarter every few years. I wish I could be a little more optimistic about this, I mean I imagine I’ll donate the second Kickstarter, but I doubt I’d do it a third time!

As the Giant on Twin Peaks once said.
It is happening again.
It is happening...again.
And I'll re-up what I once said the prospect of another Kickstarter:
"What I'm saying is, Joel would need to do a big mea culpa and start from scratch, while giving some creative control to other people before I give him 1 more red cent."

Ya know, I've kept thinking about popping in here and starting some -- "it's been over a month since anyone's posted here" thread to talk about the lack of stuff to talk about...
...and now here's this.
It will be interesting to see. mylungswereaching essentially nails my thoughts on this exactly.
One thought I do have right out of the gate though, is that I seriously doubt Joel will get another $6 million. No way. A healthy amount of that was people repaying Joel for the original show, and nostalgia and excitement. But now that's done.
I'm guessing the people that are going to give this new one 100s and even 1000s of dollars are going to be much rarer. Honestly, at this point it should just be a preorder for some blurays or streams of the next season of the thing already kickstarted.
I would be worried that the pic just looks like he wants more money for a season 13 of what is already going, but I'm sure that was just a thrown together cut and paste of media he already had lying around.
I'm also guessing that this one won't have to do with NetFlix as, A) they already walked away, and B) that's probably why it took this amount of time--the Netflix contract has probably finally run out.
I really hope he stays away from any streaming deals and just sells downloads and streams straight through himself of Shout!

I'm not too crazy about the idea of there being a new Kickstarter. The last Kickstarter was mostly about making noise and letting the fans be heard. This one feels like "We stumbled, let's pick ourselves up." But then again a lot of projects proceed on constant crowd funding these days, so that might be the old fogey in me.
Not sure if I can do too high of a contribution this year. I pretty much need my savings stable and things have been rough since my dad passed. But I'll hear what they have to say tomorrow before I make any decisions.

...Oh god, and if it has anything to do with a live show, so help me...

I agree with mylungswereaching, Diet Kolos and BoB3K on this. Huge wait and see from me. Highly doubt that I will be giving them any money this time around.

If Joel gives his sworn promise on day one that they're going to go back to the old school way of shooting theater segments, that is guys sitting under puppets delivering jokes at the same time so that they don't have to reinvent the wheel and have to edit everything together later on, I may just be comfortable enough to participate this time.

I mean if it does come back, surely they’ll have to try an shop it somewhere who unlike Netflix doesn’t have an insane track record of canceling their shows after only a couple seasons. Honestly I get what happened with Netflix has to be incredibly disappointing, but the fanbase can’t just keep bailing the show out!

Looks like the cheerleading and groupthink is back already. I and anyone else with trepidation are getting downvoted pretty hard on the MST subreddit.
The "any new content is good content" mentality of fandom really is annoying.

I don't have that much problem with their choosing Netflix for the first reboot. But they had to have realized that Netflix generally Netflix gives shows 1 to 3 years unless they are huge hits. The Kickstarter paid for year one. Netflix paid for just one year and the viewership just wasn't high enough to justify year two.
As much as I love MsT3k it is a niche product. More people watch 10 minute shows on line than 2 hour shows on TV today. There really aren't any two hour shows anymore.
They need to put out a cheap show with great writing. People who expect very high production values over great writing aren't the demographic for the show anyway.

Yeah, if they refocus as a small show with barebones production values and focus on the writing, instead of trying to wow us with how Crow's arms can move, I think we'd be in good shape.

Looks like the cheerleading and groupthink is back already. I and anyone else with trepidation are getting downvoted pretty hard on the MST subreddit. The "any new content is good content" mentality of fandom really is annoying. Cult shows are always like that. A quarter of the fans will support the reboot no matter what and uncritically love it. A quarter of the fans will hate the new shows because they just aren't exactly the same as the old shows. And the other half will like some things and dislike other things about the new show but be hated by the other half of the fandom for not toeing the line. I'm also a Star Trek fan and the level of hatred for the new stuff is just incredible to me. Anything less than a total clone of their favorite show is just horrible. They seem to believe that the writers only concern should be keeping them happy. The writers first thought in the morning and last thought at night should be "How can I keep that one random fan on line happy?"

I'm cautiously optimistic that it will be a TV show and not another tour, simply because we see the full cast there in (what appears to be) new recent photos. Also, with the pandemic, I cannot seeing them expecting people to pay to fund a tour that will not be 100% safe until 2022 AND not hit every city, thus limiting the amount of backers.
My hope is they have a streaming partner already lined up (Shudder would be great) and the Kickstarter rewards are as beefy as season 11 (blu-ray, posters, shirts, etc).
