Cautiously optimistic that Joel is finally trying to “go Indie”, even though arguably he’s been doing that in various degrees for decades. I’m very happy Jonah stayed connected this whole time, and is involved with this new iteration. I love the live shows and shorts that the touring cast produced, but they never really got a chance to be legitimized. Their ads on the Twitch channel became grating, but I still liked the performers and their performances, especially in a theater context. I hope they find a way for those two worlds to coexist without it being any more awkward than it has been. Similar sentiments toward the original cast and their current projects. I’m sure it won’t happen immediately, but it would be cool for the same spirit of the Reunion to extend to occasional guest spots in this virtual theater by, say, The Mads or Rifftrax (or Dr Zaius lol). Finally, release the Star Wolf KTMA cut, you cowards!

It's about to hit one million

I might do that one. I've never backed any crowdfunding deal, I just go to the shows, or buy the sets, or stream the series when they become available. It could be interesting to actually back the series in this way. I'm usually a tightwad, I save and save and save for a rainy day (and last summer an uninsured drunk plowed into me and sent me to the hospital, and murdered my car, so me being a cheap, penny-pinching bastard turned out to be a good thing Still, I've since rebuilt my saving and might throw in this time, could be fun. Support the economy, help build a show. The Kickstarter blu-rays have consistently included a bonus disc that the later editions omit, so that's one benefit of getting the discs now. I'm still a tightwad ($15 with the box set add-on), but I did it, my first Kickstarter. Hoping for the best. Still need to see how that streaming service thing is going to work out, need more clarity on that, but I'm a backer and will have the discs at least. (I feel like I should have a sticker put on my coat, like when I got my covid shot. I'd walk around with all these stickers proudly proclaiming "I did this" and "I did that!" Woo hoo!

Seasons 11 and 12 were... Not so good. I'm not holding out much hope for this. I was downvoted on the subreddit for saying as much.
I haven't posted on here in like 40 years. How's everyone doing?

So I guess the more I think about it, the more I am not sure.
I don’t want to be a downer here. I liked 11 and 12. I own every episode. I’ve been watching since 1990/1991. I’d love more.
I have no clue what things cost. But I am not sure how 5.5 million is going to produce 12 episodes (with celebrities), set up a studio, purchase the licensing or development of a streaming service with features like watch parties, pay salaries for everyone involved.
It seems like a low number. If it were really that inexpensive, wouldn’t we see more people do this?

I still hear Penn’s voice in advertisements, inviting people to watch the show.

The streaming site is a concern, the hows, and whats behind it - cost, creation, upkeep...
These things can be buggy, I remember the Criterion Chanel having issues on its launch - movie freeze up and crashes - what a pain it was just to get through to the end of a film without some crap happening. It took a bit to fix the big problems and they were still ironing out stuff months after that (it works wonderfully these days, BTW).
This project sounds ambitious and fun, but that can turn sour if the mechanics of the thing fail.
And I would think this would be more a lo-fi project, keep costs down where you can, ditch pricey celebrities.
I'm crossing fingers.

I believe the AV Club interview mentions that developers from Scener will be working on the app, among another people. Also I think the celebrities appeared as favors to Joel because they were friends or fans. Mark Hamill and Jerry Seinfeld for example.

I pledged, and am interested in seeing how this new idea will pan out. I don't think he needs to go all out with some of the ideas (like a VR set-up). Just continue to make funny episodes with cheesy movies. I'm hoping at least a couple of the new shows will feature movies shown during the live tours, particularly "The Fantastic Argoman". I'd prefer video of the actual live shows, but re-riffing them in-studio would suffice.

There's an AV Club interview? Guys from Scener?
Why wouldn't they just use the whole infrastructure Shout! already has. I watch Ultramans with my son on there all the time. This whole thing is weird. Joel is weird. And I'm not sure in a good way any more.

I would say the reason other shows don't so the same is because very few production companies attempt to produce a show without network/streaming platform backing. If they can't sell the show, they wouldn't risk spending the money. You can produce a very low budget show and put it out there, but MST3K is not going to let the quality slide. They have a vision, a proven audience and momentum from the last 2 seasons and live shows. It is a low number, but they probably have much lower production costs than some simply because of the majority of the screen time is a licensed product they didn't have to pay to make. It's all writing. Their money is in the host segments, and getting high(er) quality source films to riff.

Joel is weird. And I'm not sure in a good way any more. From what I've seen of Shout Factory TV and their Twitch streams, they are very basic web streams of content. Not events with multiple staff logged in from different locations appearing live in a produced event for an audience that can interact via chat or webcam. Scener allows for something like this, and the Gizmoplex - based on what I've read - will allow them to curate live events with a mix of pre-recorded content and live video feeds and fan interaction. This is not something Shout is capable of on their own.

Have you not seen Frank and Trace's the Mads are back? They have been putting out a monthly riff with guests and live QA with nothing but Zoom. I'm not saying that's the quality that Gigaplex is going for, but then The Mads is a fun show and it costs ~$0 to produce. I think there are a few levels between 0 and 5 million. PSA: Check out Frank and Trace's live stream shows. They're great! If you buy a ticket you get the live stream and also a full download of the show afterwards. And all the money goes to Frank and Trace. www.themadsareback.com/www.themadsareback.com/event/a-night-of-shorts-3-livestream-screening/

There's the Zoom account fee itself, the design and marketing, having to administrate the event. It works for them, but I do not think "just use Zoom" is befitting of MST3K especially if part of the plan is to develop a platform to release new and classic content. Based on the costs breakdown, they are spending $60,000 to develop a browser-based Gizmoplex and fund the monthly events. An additional $6,000 brings Gizmoplex to smartphones and streaming devices. By comparison, Rifftrax had to raise $225,000 to produce two live shows in a rented theater. If MST3K can create an online hub for all their new episode premieres plus live events for a quarter of the cost of two live Rifftrax shows, I would say the cost for Joel's Gizmoplex is well worth it.
