Well, here we are. The end of KTMA. And the one oddball Sandy Frank movie they never re-did: K21-The Legend of DinosaursSandy Frank did such a low effort job on this, even the dogs are badly dubbed. This one had a particularly muddy print and noisy sound. Took some doing to fix it.

Alright, watching this one I get why it wasn't used in Season 3. Quite a bit of gore. More so than they ever showed outside of maybe Incredible Melting Man.

I think Legend Of The Dinosaurs may very well be the single most non-discussed episode of the entire series. Almost never see it brought up. I think it's a funny, if gory, episode.

Those are two of my favorites from KTMA. I put on my Legend of Dinos disc and watched the youtube vid at the same time, I forwarded to the movie and strangely synched both perfectly without any effort (that's a one-in-a-million shot). Then compared Last Chase, and again, better picture clarity, and definition on your's Kolos. Last Chase is miles better than my disc (I got to laughing at Trace and Josh, as they're both slightly breaking character and cracking up during the opening bit).
Looking forward to watching both in full.

It is one of my least favorite (original) KTMA eps, but I don't really remember being turned off by any violence/gore, I just remember it being pretty boring. For me anyway, I think it's that it is more like your average not-that-good-on-it's-own MST3K movie, whereas movies like Phase IV, Last Chase, City on Fire, SST are actually all fairly good, fun TV-movie quality movies. I'll have to give LOTD a rewatch.

FYI, I'm currently in the process of uploading the files uncompressed and un-Youtube'd to my Archive.org profileMy files are big. I don't care that they're big. Screw 700mb nonsense. Its 2021, who cares if you use a GB+ on one file anymore? I'm thru K16, should be done by the end of the night.

I don't think anyone stores these things on single DVDs anymore. I don't mind 1.X gig files. I just don't like it when some yahoo has a shared file that's like 5.6 gigs or something like that.

I always try to do these sorts of things at a DVD-sized bitrate, which would result in something about 4-5GB, which matches all of the episode rips. My logic is, if somebody wants to add compression to the files later, that's their business. Especially when dealing with something like the KTMA tapes, where they're second- and third-generation tapes, I wouldn't want to compress them any further because it can't help the picture look better, the only effect on the picture would be negative.

I still stand by my 1.X GB size though. 5GM is just so big. Not just download times, but even with terabyte hard drives, it takes you from upper 100s of files on a disk to low hundreds.

For me, it boils down to this: if the DVD companies working at a professional level were never able to figure out a way to compress picture down to a low enough bitrate to result in a feature length movie (or MST3k episode) under 2GB, I don't trust that consumer level compression is going to be better. To my eye, it's always more a question of "good enough", ie "this is a dumb sitcom so I don't care if the picture stutters and the pixels are blocky". (Even the professional level bitrate can result in problems, it's not like it's a perfect starting point, it's already pretty compromised; truly uncompressed raw video would be in the 25GB range.)
With regard to disc space, I have 25TB free on a 60TB NAS drive, so it's not a concern to me on my end. Leaving it to the downloader to compress based on their own preferences means that the end result file will be satisfactory to more people. People who prefer native interlacing be retained can have it, people who want it removed can take it out, etc.

Update, I've been contacted by MST producer Ivan A. via Reddit, asking about the HQ uploads, specifically if they're straight tape transfers or if I "did anything" to them so that "so that we're not "stealing" whatever work you might have done without realizing it."
He's "downloading them now for our archives".
I'll email him later tonight going over where I found most of the episodes and the tinkering I did to them.

Seems a little odd considering they should have the best quality collection of KTMA episodes themselves...
Unless those old U-matic tapes totally dissolved dust, which we know they didn't because Jim Mallon was uploading portions of them in pretty good quality...
Unless they've lost them...
