Seems a little odd considering they should have the best quality collection of KTMA episodes themselves... Unless those old U-matic tapes totally dissolved dust, which we know they didn't because Jim Mallon was uploading portions of them in pretty good quality... Unless they've lost them... Maybe there are sections of them that are a little damaged.

That is super interesting. I guess they really have none of the KTMA episodes backed up except for the first two. They gotta be out there somewhere, right? If they don't even have K04 to K21... that spells bad news to me about ever getting higher quality copies of these. At least we have the fan uploads. It's also interesting that you were asked about this now. It makes me wonder if they're planning to do something with the KTMA episodes. Probably not, though.

Had some computer issues last night and wasn't able to email him back yet. But I'm formulating an email now.
I may at the end ask about the current fate of the KTMA masters themselves. Need to find a way to do it that isn't too intrusive or rude, though...

He's "downloading them now for our archives". Hey, wow, that would be pretty cool if I had something to do with official releases of KTMA! ...even though all I did was grab them from one share source and provide them to someone else who wanted them...
"What would you say...you do here?"

Worst that can happen is he doesn't answer.

Fair point. I'm asking about the status of the masters and if they've been digitized already.

Oh, also I accidentally left out a potentially important part of his original message:
"Just wanted to reach out because I saw your HQ uploads on archive.org of the KTMA episodes, which is the first time I've been able to get my hands on copies of most of them, so I'm downloading them now for our archives, at least for reference."
Not 100% sure what "At least for reference" could imply. But it's interesting. Indicates they do have the master copies to compare these to. But if so, I'm not sure why he'd need these...or why he says its the first time he's getting his hands on KTMA eps...

Going all the way back to Thanksgiving 2016, Joel said that they had discovered *masters* of the first two KTMA episodes:
"I'm happy to tell you that we finally found master tapes for two of the three "lost KTMA episodes" of MST3K: Invaders from the Deep, and Revenge of the Mysterons from Mars. I actually thought we had discovered copies of these episodes at one point during the Kickstarter last year, and I was really excited that I'd be able to finally share them with you… and then it turned out that we hadn't found them, and it was a real bummer. But then, earlier this year, a few final boxes turned up. And there they were: the very first episodes of MST3K ever made."
Now, I also remember that Shout Factory was going to release the KTMA host segments on DVD, or at least some of them, but cancelled that because of "quality issues." So I assume that Shout Factory has the KTMA masters that exist. But I have a whole lot of questions: Does Shout Factory have them, and Alternaversal doesn't have access for some reason, and the "we" in Joel's 2016 refers to Shout Factory and not him/Alternaveral? If the masters are in someone's possession, are those the actual original Sony U-matic recordings, or copies that Jim Mallon created from those U-matic tapes when he was "dubbing" them off? Is it possible that because the KTMA episodes pre-date the formation of Best Brains, that the actual originals are still in Mallon's possession, and he only turned over copies that were made during the existence of Best Brains, and those copies are only partial/incomplete?
I'm really leaning toward the first option, that whatever KTMA material that exists at this point belongs to Shout Factory, and they're not sharing, maybe for legal reasons. (The first two KTMA exist in the Gizmoplex only because of their being distributed to the first Kickstarter backers through VHX/Vimeo, and are grandfathered in to be available there only to the people who got them in November 2017.) It would explain why Ivan says he has never received copies of them.

I'll throw out a random point. It's 2022. how many of you have a VCR tape or two laying around and no way to play it? It's possible there are fancy 1980s digital tape whatsajiggers in possession of people that don't actually have any working quality 40 year old tech to play them, or they can 'play' them, but the analog signal that comes out is really crappy for a host of possible reasons.

Tell him that if they use your work, you want a good clean copy of "Godzilla vs the Sea Monster" as payment

Interesting to hear this regarding the KTMAs. I’m fairly certain most of them still exist but are probably just in now shoddy quality. It’s a mystery for now.

High quality being a relative term, of course. Thanks to BoB3K , I've gotten my hands on some higher quality KTMA episodes that in most cases blow the widely circulated DAP copies out of the water when it comes to video quality. I took those and went a step further by working by magic on the audio to remove the VHS buzz and static hiss. So now you can see AND hear the KTMA episodes clearer than most fans ever have for more than 30 years. I've made a playlist, and am updating it as I add episodes: Find it hereI'm adding to it as I finish editing. K04-Gamera K05-GameraK06-Gamera vs Gaos - This is a broadcast edition. The video quality is better than the new version Bob gave me. K07-Gamera vs ZigraK08-Gamera vs GuironK09-Phase IVI have every KTMA episode except for the elusive episode 3. All really good quality from MST3UK a few years ago. Unfortunately he disappeared. Thankfully I have all the episodes and the ones MST3K took down like Rocketship - XM. I have em all.
