Haha yeah, that is a good comparison, especially with stuff like the Sega CD and 3DO and all that. Funny enough, those kind of games would probably make for pretty entertaining riffs since they're just movies with a little bit of interactivity.

Now that I think about it an interactive playthrough of one of those games would be a fun event.

Quickly skimming through the update, I can't help but get the feeling that the Gizmoplex is just another streaming service but with a really fancy menu. They're really hyping it up as a "virtual theatre", but I don't get what makes it that special. Consider this.. If I want to buy a rifftrax VOD on their website and play it on my projector or tv I have to connect my laptop to it with the hdmi. What would be great is if Rifftrax had an app where I can buy and watch their VOD content on the stuff I already stream content on (firestick, ps4, etc). But they don't have it. MST3K has that problem with the episodes I got on the VHX platform. The gizmoplex is going to solve this issue for the cost of buying one rifftrax VOD a month and offer live premiers and other content through it.. They are gonna dress it up so that each space looks like it is run by the Mads themselves 'in canon' with the story of the show.. It really isn't any more complicated than that but is a win over having to subscribe to netflix to watch the new season or have to plug my laptop up to my projector to watch the latest Rifftrax VOD.

Now, is that real or is that fan bait like the "We've offered cameos to all the original cast"? is the next question. Either way, I find it scuzzy. They shouldn't bring it up until the deal is finalized. Otherwise it's like they're just telling people what they want to hear in order to entice them to donate more money. People want more transparency then complain when they get it. This is something people have been asking them about so they are telling them where they are at on that. Same with deluge of people constantly asking them if the original cast will be back or not. And its led to getting Weinstein, Pehl, Corbett and probably more coming.

They're really hyping it up as a "virtual theatre", but I don't get what makes it that special. Maybe I just need to read it more closely, but I'm not seeing it. I also briefly saw that there are potential plans for MST3K themed games on the service. If that ever becomes a reality, maybe they could that fan made Manos game on there. He's envisioning some sort of total VR world. What he seems to be thinking of will not become reality. The general ideas seem good but the whole immersive VR aspect reminds me of old video game marketing of Full Motion Video where they promise an amazing immersive experience but the video size is tiny and quality is low. where are you getting this?. there is one line in there about VR that they are 'looking into'.. it's not the basis of the app experience. It's an app.. each page in the app will have it's own art that makes it look like a section of a movie theater.. but you are just clicking through to each section like any website.

A huge Gizmoplex update just went out, but of interest to this thread Ivan does mention: "we're also in talks to offer content from RiffTrax, Cinematic Titanic, Film Crew and more."I feel like it would end up being a small selection of older RiffTrax titles, like you can find on Shout Factory TV on the MST3K page; there are 10 older RiffTrax there to watch, as well as the four Film Crew episodes. It would make no sense for RiffTrax to offer a large amount of content on someone else's subscription streamer when they have their own Friends service available. That's why they've cut back on the content available on Amazon Prime, Pluto, and Tubi.

it could be an offer they can't refuse, the Gizmoplex serving as a distribution platform much better than their own. It brings in more subscribers and Rifftrax gets that money.

the Gizmoplex serving as a distribution platform much better than their own. Have you used the RiffTrax site? It's very nice. easy to find riffs, purchase them, view your library, download or direct stream anything in it. I seriously doubt the Gizmoplex will be a better user experience than what RiffTrax offers out of the gates.

I seriously doubt the Gizmoplex will be a better user experience than what RiffTrax offers out of the gates. Probably. There's something to the convenience of having riff-based comedy all in one spot. I've only ever bought a couple of Rifftrax things, but once I realized they had a few things on ShoutTV, I started mixing them in with MST and CT...

I seriously doubt the Gizmoplex will be a better user experience than what RiffTrax offers out of the gates. My choices for watching rifftrax off the main site are this.. hook my laptop up to the tv/projector, download the file on a usb and plug it into the tv/projector, or use the incredibly clunky built in internet browser on any of my streaming equipment (PS4, firestick, etc). All annoying and requires me to go out of my way to choose to watch them as opposed to all the other entertainment options that I can view just by turning the tv on at the end of a long day. Having an app that is already there on the firestick where I can pull up, browse, and switch between mst3k episodes as easily as Netflix is a lot better than the rifftrax website. Rifftrax should have expanded the rifftrax app to do these kinds of things a long time ago.

Do you have an account at RiffTrax.com? And a RiffTrax library? It's pretty easy to use. They make enough money to have 19 full time people working for them (without Kickstarters), plus pay their contributing writers, so I'm not sure that the Gizmoplex would have more subscribers than RiffTrax has users. After reading the update yesterday, I feel like the Gizmoplex isn't really an environment I would want to use on a regular basis. I want a simple experience to get a riff to download to my hard drive and watch at my convenience. I don't want an atmosphere where it's like a CD-ROM from 1996 and I have to go through three layers of animations and menus just to search for something. I know I'm in the minority feeling that way.

You actually probably aren't alone, and they are probably going to find out pretty quickly once they launch that even the people who like the virtual stuff still want a way to just go to the home page, click a link to their library, and then click an item to start watching or downloading it. Then again as far as we know, they already know this and it will be there from the beginning. (shh, don't tell anyone, but i think all this virtual stuff is more of Joel's blue sky dreams (and huckstering) and what will actually end up be presented to gizmoplex users is just a list and click interface with a few graphics...)

Someone pointed out to me elsewhere that the Gizmoplex site, as Joel is proposing it, might have difficulties with being accessible under the ADA act for people who use screenreaders and other accessibility devices. I hope that's being taken into consideration as well. I agree with you that what the Gizmoplex will be, at least in the beginning, will be simpler than what is being pitched during the fundraising.
