I was thinking about movies I actually liked from 1961, that would suit the show. How about "The Shadow of the Cat" (from Hammer) or Castle's "Mr. Sardonicus" (it's talky, but they've done talky before, like Bloodlust)

yeah i guess Joel doesnt see things from our end and how movies like Robot Monster and Earth Vs Spider and all these other rubber suit movies give MST3K such nostalgia and appeal of watching all these early failed visionaries get laughably crushed by their own ambitions in back in that new age of imagination.

I think it's great that MST3K has attracted a new group of young fan. It's encouraging - there's still life in this show, it's still relevant. And it has been able to do this for a while. We have fans in their 30s, who discovered the show in their teens when it aired on Sci-Fi, and those in their 50s and 60s who were around when Joel was host.
But I get it, new era, new fans to make happy... as long as they remember us who have been around a while and supported them (and also backed those kickstarters) - having Ator, and Hercules and next a Gamera, with shorts and a B&W film in the future, does feed the nostalgia, and makes me feel like I still matter as a fan.

I think if nothing else, now is a good time to slide back into having some black and white movies. Particularly not needing to worry about the audience landscape of Netflix, and it can ease younger (less forgiving of b&w) viewers into black and White episodes. I know it was a shame that the last 2 seasons were exclusively in colour, but I also understood they felt the need to attract new fans!

While Season 11 didn't have any black and white movies, it did feature The Beast of Hollow Mountain, which became the movie with the largest gap between initial release and appearance on MST (61 years; it was older when Jonah and the Bots riffed on it than Undersea Kingdom was in Season 4). And aside from the obvious few minutes of dinosaur action in the third act, Beast is a really archaic western. Westerns in general aren't popular anymore, but I imagine a land-grab western like this would feel interminably old (and boring) to people who don't like old movies. So, in other words, I think if new MSTies could accept that movie, they'd just as well accept a silly black and white sci-fi movie. But I'm a classic Hollywood cinephile so I don't really know.

Count me as one who really didn't like that episode and don't like any of the episodes featuring 'westerns' from the old seasons either. Even the color palette of those movies bores me to death.. lol. But I think the new era needs a wide variety and should do all the genres of films that were loved in the old episodes (and hopefully some new genres too) . I'm glad they got one really old western in there with Jonah. Lots of fans like that episode. I do however love a lot of the episodes that feature black and white movies. Samson vs the vampire women is one of my all time favs.. I also really love The Screaming Skull and I Accuse my parents is a fan favorite for good reason.

Rifftrax also apparently avoids B&W movies for the same reasons as Joel. I don't think it's necessary in either instance, but I am glad they'll be showing one in Season 13.

Not happy to read that - but it's funny, Bridget was on The Mads livestream and she was asked (by a viewer) when she and MJ were going to riff more from "The Teenager" series. These are B&W movies from the 40s, and seem to be fan favorites... course I don't have access to Rifftrax sale records, so maybe they are just vocal fan favorites and don't appeal to a broader audience?

I think it’s a fair bet that most episodes here on out will be in colour, because of that reason. However I’m just happy to see they’re being phased back in. To rule them out would be to miss out on some on a big selection of golden material to work with. It’s certainly one of the more encouraging decisions made so far regarding the show’s future!

They did Last Man on Earth this year. They used a colorized version of LMOE. Looking over the Mike/Kevin/Bill riffs, it seems like the black and white releases have slowed way down. They did It's a Wonderful Life in December, and it looks like the last one before that was Giant from the Unknown in May of 2019. My guess is there's a lower threshold of expected sales for Bridget and Mary Jo, so black & white might work better for them. But even then, if there's a colorized version, like Sherlock Holmes, they seem to go with that.

I remembered it being black and white but I think I was blending The Mads Are Back riffing The Tingler in my mind.

MJ&B's Teenager series had to sell okay, they did like 3 of them so far, didn't they? They have done a lot of B&W. Although, I could be confused, because whenever I watch a colorized riffed movie, I just adjust the color out in the player settings. Were the Sherlock riffs B&W or color? They've done like 3 of them too.
All this talk of 'new' MST3K fans from Netflix. We don't really know they're new, we just know there were new kickstarter backers. We also don't know what age group they fall in. One of the first things the new MST3K site should do is just give a simple survey to its 'members' and just see what demographics they are and whether they want old/new, B&W or color, shorts / serials / whatever, etc.
