If a movie has a long stretch (or stretches) that they deem un-riffable then I'd rather they just look for another movie.

I'll just say, because it's been brought a number of times... but I didn't know (when they first played) that they cut a Host Seg from season 12, I didn't miss it. I guess that says a lot about how I felt about their Host Segs, a lot of them were forgettable.

I never watched the rest of season 12 after Mac & Me, and I'm on the fence of whether I'll watch any more going forward. I feel like Joel himself has lost sight of what MST3K is (at least to me and many original fans). It's not a mile-a-minute block of entertainment to be consumed, it's a show about hanging out and watching cheesy movies with friends and turning it into a fun experience. RiffTrax doesn't really edit at all, but I think they've lost the spirit a little in a different way in that they just act like they hate the movie from the beginning and hate the director and hate the actors, etc.
IMO, a cheesy movie riffing project is about taking a movie and having fun watching it--you laugh at the bad parts, you make fun of the cheesy parts, you applaud the surprise good parts, have fun playing with the silly characters and situations, etc. etc. (Yes, riffed movies are allowed to have good parts and good characters, and its okay to cheer for them as they plod through the cheese.)
Also IMO, if a riffed movie has a dull part, that's an opportunity for the writers and actors to show off their comedic chops making something out of nothing. If they fall down, or start sidestepping those parts, that probably says more about them than the movie or the riff engine.

Rifftrax definitely edits, unless they just have a habit of picking movies that are 75-80 minutes long.

RiffTrax edits, but to me it's not as noticeable. (YMMV) There was an interview somewhere, where Casey June, the senior RiffTrax editor, explained the editing process and the choices made, and it made a lot of sense to me. I don't mind them editing for length, but the movie has to remain coherent, and that's where I feel the editing process failed on Season 12 especially.
That said, RiffTrax can also do unedited movies, as they do for their JTJ releases and for RiffTrax Live movies. It's hard to write 2 hours of jokes, especially for repetitive scenes, and they've admitted that many times in interviews. But they do it, when they have to, and they CAN write riffs for the boring parts, the dull parts, the driving scenes, the underwater scenes, the dancing scenes, the walking somewhere scenes, etc. Old MST3K wrote for many boring and dull movies and made them funny. Cinematic Titanic didn't cut for content, as far as I know, and wrote for some dull and boring scenes. Trace and Frank don't edit down their movies, and boy some of them have some long stretches of nothing going on. (I'm looking at you, Walk the Dark Street.) I want to find out if the writers for new MST3K have the chops to make those dull scenes funny, but cutting the movies down to a point where there's always something happening isn't allowing them to even try.
Do most fans notice if the movies are edited down to 2/3 or less of their running time? Probably not. Do any fans care? Only a few, from what I can see. But it's not fair to make jokes about how disjointed and badly put together a movie is if edits have been made in order to make the movie look worse than it actually is, and that goes for whoever is riffing. And if a comedy riff writer can't write for the parts where nothing is happening because it's too much of a plod, or it's too hard, then maybe they aren't all that good a riff writer.

Rifftrax definitely edits, unless they just have a habit of picking movies that are 75-80 minutes long. Well, they didn't used to. Obviously they never do for the riff only synced riffs. But I don't think they really did back in the beginning of pre-synced full eps, either. Well, just another reason to not like modern RiffTrax, I guess.

Yeah, Rifftrax does edit, a lot (and some fans let them have it for doing so). But to be fair, the JtJ releases are edit-free.
I might have mentioned this already, but Bridget & Mary Jo's riff on WW84 was amazing. I didn't like the movie and I didn't really want to sit through it again - and I can't imagine the ladies had fun writing and riffing on a 2 and half hour crappy flick, but they powered through and nailed it, every scene intact, funny from beginning to end, their upbeat personalities never going sour.
B&MJ I salute you, you're champs!

(I'm looking at you, Walk the Dark Street.) lol.. yeah Walk the Dark Street was really painful. I can't believe Trace and frank subjected themselves to riff that one over and over again.. the poor guys. I mean something like Red Zone Cuba is worse but they only had to riff it once and then moved on.

Rifftrax definitely edits, unless they just have a habit of picking movies that are 75-80 minutes long. ideas.rifftrax.com/knowledgebase/articles/1818544-why-do-you-edit-the-movieswhy do you edit movies? Short answer: To make them funny! Longer answer: Tooooo maaaaaake theeeemmmmmm funnnnyyyyyyyy. In all seriousness, the movies we riff on are bad. Very bad. And usually, they're bad for several reasons, including such boring filmmaking details as pacing, editing, and overall coherence. Just like back in the Mystery Science Theater days, we sometimes edit our Video On Demand titles for comedic value. That's to help you, the viewer, as well as to make the end result more entertaining — or, at least, watchable. Likewise, if a movie includes scenes of extreme violence, or something else that we think would otherwise detract from folks' being able to actually enjoy the riffing, we will make edits where appropriate. But we always try to take care to leave whatever plot there is intact, and to make sure that the RiffTrax content you experience is funny first. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The official rifftrax word on it. I agree with them.

So are they (Rifftrax) saying that their just the jokes releases aren't as entertaining or funny because they can't edit them? Would Roadhouse be better without the sex and violence? Yes? No?
And are they contradicting themselves when they re-do an experiment and it's considered a bonus when they include previously cut scenes?
I think a lot of folks are making good points for both sides of the debate, so I'll just waffle and say, for me, it depends. Sometimes we lose great scenes, sometimes the edits are welcome, sometimes I want the whole enchilada, sometimes a bite will suffice, sometimes when we touch, the honesty's too much...
(thanks Frank)

Per Joel, they lost the rights to the 2nd selection for the Holiday episode, so they've now acquired a 3rd choice. They also couldn't find a good print of another episode and are on the 2nd choice for that one.

I guess I'd have to know how bad the extant prints they could find were, but I wish they were more comfortable choosing a movie that doesn't have a recent 4k Bluray release or something with a high quality release. It seems awfully limiting, especially for a movie that fit all of the other criteria.

When I read that I thought, "Yup, the days of the Cowtown puppet show and the scratchy prints are truly gone"
Ah well, I guess things do change, and I'll always have Paris, er, Cowtown. But I am VERY curious to know what was lost, either by rights or by the print quality.

Who are they making this show for if not people with a high tolerance for bad movies? Bad prints are part of the freaking experience.
