I was reading this piece on MST3Ks most depressing movies and thought, what would I include, what would be my favorite dark nights of the soul?
The 8 Most Depressing MST3K Episodes - they selected: The Violent Years, The Brute Man, Hamlet, Parts: The Clonus Horror, The Girl in Lover’s Lane, Sky Divers, Manos, High School Big Shot.
Now, there's depression and there's darkness to consider. Dark as in twisted, "Brain That Wouldn't Die" would qualify under that heading for example.
Including shorts, my 5 favorite dark, dank, depressing MST eps would be...
High School Big Shot - the misery is piled on high in this one, I think the experiments a funny one, but oh that death and despair.
Days of Our Years - that Priest really piles on the happy stories, doesn't he? But I always remember, gentle pressure, and so far it's worked, so far I've not had my eyes melted out of my head.
Last Clear Chance - another short, another heaping spoonful of hellish death. This is why that kid in Gamera vs Guiron is obsessed with traffic accidents.
Devil Doll - sleazeball hypnotist forces a woman to love him, kills a guy and puts his soul into a dummy, and worst of all, denies ham to dolls, bastard! Dreary, nasty little movie.
Rocket Attack U.S.A. - I agree with the article, the ending of The Girl in Lovers Lane is depressing as all get out, and it's a great episode to boot. But to offer another something different, how about this dreary little piece, for one, you got a woman who sleeps with a pig for information... and it's for nothing, the agents fail miserably, they die, you die, 3 million die...
What would you add, or what are your favorites?
