Gotta say, I usually can't watch the Turkey Day marathons at all, but this year I managed to get on for almost all of Escape 2000 and Avalanche since only family members who actually like MST3K were about. And I had a blast! Sorry it fell flat for so many, but it was a fun time. It was also the first time in months I'd actually intentionally sat down to watch the show, and it felt like a good reminder about why this show is so awesome.

I can excuse unfunny host segments, because the original show had plenty of them. And yet it remained good even during the Sci-Fi years, when the host segments were downright painful to watch. It's the riffing I care most about.
I'm not a fan of Tom & Crow getting new voices, though. It takes a while to accept new actors in familiar roles, and we really haven't had enough time to get used to Hampton & Baron yet. Introducing new voices now, when we haven't even gotten used to the old ones, feels like too much change too fast.

and finally.. not sure what everyone is complaining about with the meta humor. to me it's not new.. even thinking back to the robot roll call with Bill corbett... "I'm different".. there was always a winking to it 'just being a show' to me it's just cause the turkey day segments weren't funny that it becomes a problem. True, but it was always these little throw away subtle little nods in the past, not this over-the-top-in-your-face explosion of "LOOK AT US! WE'RE DOING JOKES ABOUT HOW WE'RE JUST A SHOW, RELAX!", "we're just actors, not actual people" schtick they're doing now. Also, there was more of an organic chemistry and folksy feel before, where now it just seems forced.

I wouldn't say the marathon fell flat. There were some good episode choices, and I loved how it gave attention to more lesser known episodes. Also, this year's marathon gets big thumbs up for showing Avalanche, which I and many others consider the best episode of the Netflix era. I did like the little season 13 teasers as well, as they all showcased the wackiness of each movie pretty well. I just feel like that if the host segments are anything to go by, then season 13 might be a painful watch. I know that these are just silly segments for a Turkey Day marathon, but they did these before with the Turkey Day marathons on Comedy Central and those were great. Perfectly captured the feeling of the show, even if they're just simple bumpers. If this kind of humor is what we're gonna see in season 13, then we're in trouble.

I didn't watch any of Turkey Day this year, was busy with other stuff. So I have no opinion on the substance. But I did see screenshots of the bridge, and the cgi does indeed look like ass.
Here's to hoping one day they build a physical set again. One that is slightly more three dimensional than the flat wall they had in Season 11-12.

I would imagine that is more indicative of the writing quality of Season 13.

One that is slightly more three dimensional than the flat wall they had in Season 11-12.I can't for the life of me figure out why the bridge background looks fuzzy and out of focus. I can grab a screencap of the bridge from S11 or 12 that looks clearer and sharper. Surely they had a better quality picture than that to use, right? I haven't seen a single comment mentioning the sound quality, yet. The first two segments with just Jonah and the bots sounded OK but it got worse after that, very echo-y at times, especially for the bot voices. It sounds like it was recorded in a room with not enough sound dampening material, to my ears. I listen through headphones or computer speakers; is the sound just bad for me with my setup because it's mixed for larger speakers/soundbars?

I've never complained about the bot voices changing because that's something that's out of anyone's control. Different performers are going to sound different even if they try to imitate an original voice. That said...
I can't stand Nate's Crow. I hate hate HATE that generic cartoony kiddie puppet show voice he's using for Crow. Conor's voice is naturally deep enough that you could distinguish Tom from Crow if Nate used a more natural, conversational voice. It's a bad imitation of Trace's KTMA Crow, if Crow was hopped up on diet pills and in a manic phase.

I've heard many positive things about the live tour. However, I'm also kinda wondering if people really enjoyed it because it was funny or because they were in a crowd and everyone else was laughing with them. I can't say for sure. However, if the live tours are genuinely good, then I'm hoping season 13 will have the same quality!

I promise you.. a packed theater would not have made Turkey Day segments funny to me. but definitely think all experiments are more enjoyable in bigger groups. So I get what you mean.

The crowd vibe is a bonus for sure (Manos was so, so funny in a theater setting), but I've also been to live shows that didn't cut it for me, where I wasn't joining in with the audience's laughter. I think I'm able to gauge what I find funny and what I don't, though a theater can make a good experiment (or any comedy for that matter) even better.
