the original image isn't too bad since max and kinga are there and it's zoomed in.. but when it's zoomed out it looks really lame IMO.

Re-watching myself. The image is just SLIGHTLY sharper and the audio isn't AS lagged, but still is slightly behind the image. That may just be my Chromecast, though.
That intro is terri-bad. Like, not only does it look and sound awful, but lyrically its stunted and breaks the appropriate number syllables in a few places to wedge in the new lyrics. I'm looking at you "G.P.C."
The cgi backgrounds on the SOL bridge are oddly slightly out of focus or slightly blurry. Probably an effect of making what was probably a HQ photo of the built bridge and blowing it up over a whole green screen. But I can't discount the idea that it MIGHT be new art and drawn, like the hallway.
For the Mads. -Wow. Is Felicia Day phoning it in? She's so bad. I wasn't a huge fan of her character in Seasons 11/12 but that was miles ahead of...this. Tonally confused, tired... She looks bad. Like, her hair/make up are so off-brand from the last 2 seasons. She looks like she's a wet cat. -Speaking of hair. My god. That wig on Mary Joe. What the hell. Awful. Not to mention Pearl is out of character from past seasons. -The Mads "control panel" backdrop looks bad, but the Gizmoplex/moonscape behind it looks oddly ok to my eye. The mini cutout Artie and the movie liquid works well. So that's 1 area where the new 2D cutout aesthetic works. But everywhere else, especially that dreadful doorway sequence it is just terrible. -Regarding that doorway. I think I know why my brain rejects it so much. THE SOUND! Its the same audio from the Netflix doorway, what with the sound effects of little swinging parts, objects coming out of the wall, etc. But...the 2D animated sequence is static save for the doors. So I can HEAR what's supposed to be happening, but I can't SEE it. So it comes off as WRONG.
SPEAKING OF...why can they use the audio straight from the Netflix doors but not the actual video?
Will probably have more thoughts as the episode goes on.
Edit: Christ, this audio mix is bad. I need to hear the movie, but in order to do that I need to turn it up so high that the riffing is almost blowing out my speakers. I,may tinker with the TV's audio settings to see if I can mitigate it.
Edit2: I really do like the slower pace of riffs. The beginning of the film, the riffing is slightly maybe TOO slow, quite a few "pauses" where they skip potential riffs, but the pace picks up and hits that sweet spot soon enough.
-I'm still not a fan of Baron's riff delivery. It's BETTER than Seasons 11/12, but it's still occasionally distracting. He tries to "sell" the riffs a little too often. Odd emphasis on certain words. Hampton and Jonah sound natural but Baron sounds like he's doing stage comedy and swinging for the back row, which is odd because of the 3 of them he's the professional actor. And he's not like that in the host segments. But it IS better than previous seasons.
-Segment 2 - The yearbook sketch. Boy, wouldn't it be nice if Jonah had a personality? Or if we knew anything about him? Anyways, this sketch goes nowhere and relies too much on "yell and repeat yourelf" humor.
-Segment 3 - The QVC sketch. It keeps going and going and going... Maybe could use some zooms on the bots modeling the items. It sems we're back to the flat, locked-off shots from Season 11.
-Intermission sign. Holy god. I kept fast-forwarding and it kept going. Just inexplicable and takes you RIGHT out of the movie. I counted, it lasted 12 minutes. Maybe place the paid sponsor ads throughout the other host segments so its not just all in the middle of segment 3? Maybe treat them like real commercials so we don't awkwardly have to come BACK to Segment 3 and then into the theater? The kitchen intermission itself is godawful and I hope stays in the premieres.
-Segment 4 - A good sketch! And Baron's Servo is the best part!
-Segment 5 - That song is a mess. They took the Pants Song from episode 410, tweaked it slightly, screwed it up by adding more lyrics than the new song could hold, and then gave a half-assed performance. It has certain Season 2-5 vibes, but not in a charming way. Those Cambots behind the Mads look just terrible.
I'm estimating, but the episode was short. About 84ish minutes without the technical issues, Joel intro and Intermission. It might stretch to near 90 minutes with the credits, seeing how bloated those were in Seasons 11 and 12.

I said it on Reddit but I still don't see how Pearl is out of character. She has always had a relationship with Kinga that is grudgingly a caretaker and not entirely venomous, so it doesn't surprise me she'd swing along the bipolar pendulum back to doting grandma, just as she smothered Clay. But I don't agree about Jonah or much else either, so never mind.

SPEAKING OF...why can they use the audio straight from the Netflix doors but not the actual video? makes sense because audio can always be made up of stock effects that everyone can use. Its why you always hear the same sound effects in hundreds of movies including the Star Trek doors. It's really hard to lay ownership to small bits of generic audio or sound.

Scifi era Pearl is the GOAT. No. SciFi Pearl is great, but you have to give GOAT to golden era Frank and Dr F. "Push the button Frank."

Pearl was very solid, Kinga and Max are very solid. But it will always be Clay and Frank to me. I think the Sci-Fi era Mads will always, for me, be somewhat compromised by the profoundly tedious 'chase' subplot stuff in S8 (and I think only 8?) that I tuned out completely after a certain point - a little Observer, etc. action went a long way for me, especially the whole thing with their planet, then ancient Rome, etc. I rewatched The Undead the other day and there is a segment on the Observer planet that seemed to go on for half the show and made me want to kill myself.
When they got to the castle I could tune back in, but I always liked Mary Jo as Pearl. I actually thought the new setup was best in the brief early period when it was just Pearl, Bobo and the forgotten, forlorn Peanut ruling over "Deep Ape".

(Copy and pasting my review from the official MST3K forum, since I don't feel like typing out another one.) Alright, having actually seen the episode now, I'll give my short review of 1301. It was good! It doesn't feel like they're trying to cram in as many jokes as possible with every scene. There's more quiet moments, where the movie gets to shine. The riffs were actually well written and they even got a few chuckles out of me. And I think the movie was a great choice to open the new season. It's a familiar face to MST3K fans, and the movie itself is completely wacky and makes no sense. So, it's perfect for the show. I can see Perico becoming a bit of a meme in the community (along with the almighty white dot). The host segments were not as good. I don't like the Mads sketches. They looked bad, weren't very funny, and really served more as an advertisement for the Gizmoplex than as comedy sketches. I liked Kinga and Max's antics in the Netflix seasons, but here they're just not doing it for me. Pearl also comes back, but she is completely useless as well. I also just do not like the new intro. It really looks like it was just slapped together at the last minute. They don't even show the hosts in it! I will say that the wrestling and home shopping network sketches were pretty creative and enjoyable. So, not all of the host segments were busts.
But at the end of the day, the most important part of the show (the riffing) was done pretty well here. So, I think I can safely call it a good episode.

Perico should've been a guest character in the host segments potentially able to recur in future, but they were stretched thin as is on doing those safely so I get a minimum of people.
I don't fault Felicia and Patton for how grating they came off in these segments. It's the nature of how it's being executed according to COVID protocol which makes it so terribly awkward. I did get a laugh out of Max calling in on the shopping network segment, and I was fine with Pearl and Kinga.

You know, everyone keeps making covid excuses. If this was so hard, and what we see is the 'best' they could do, why didn't they just wait a year. Is Joel really that desperate for money? It's not like MST3K core fans were going anywhere. I know there's the idiom of 'better than nothing', but for a non-essential consumer product like an entertainment show, it's rarely true.
