Couple of things Joel mentioned during Q&A: -Back in the CC days it would cost 35K to make an episode (70k in today's dollars) and its still rather cheap today. Probably doesn't include the cost of the movie rights btw -They are aspiring to have their own studio and office again but its taking a long time. definitely does not include the movie rights.

I thought it was fine, not stellar, not a laugh riot, but fine. It flowed better, though the Jonah host segs ran overlong and weren't really all that funny. The short's riffing was alright, with a few guffaws here and there. But you know that riff about not putting a good movie in with your bad movie... that's how I felt once Manos started, and I thought, "Now this, is MST". The Nu-mst short just came up a little short by comparison laugh-wise, the chemistry in the theater, just not as special. I dunno, so far, it's all fine, it's all okay, but it's not all that great. You think the Hired part 2 short was funnier than the new short? I find that surprising.

I find it surprising that your surprised by that. Hell, yes, it's funnier!!!! Absolutely nothing in that new short approached anywhere near the highs of Hired II. That's not even being a rose-colored_glasses, old-head fan. It subjectively wasn't on that level. C'mon, don't even. It was a perfectly cromulent short. But let's not pretend it was great. Or at the very least as good are Hired II. I've watched Mary Jo & Bridgette shorts on Rifftrax's YouTube that have gotten more laughs from me than that Water short did.

I thought the Johnny/supermarket short from last Halloween held its own against the shorts of the past, so they definitely still have it in them. I didn't catch this latest short, though, so I can't comment on its quality. I am eager to see these new bumpers, though, if there are screenshots anywhere.

That short can hold its own. Maybe it's just a different team of writers?

I find it surprising that your surprised by that. Hell, yes, it's funnier!!!! lol! I never found that short to be particularly memorable... but then again I'm someone who thinks the manos episode isn't anywhere near the best the show has done.. not even near the best of the joel era. shrug. I really enjoyed the new short. I thought it really solid. Not 'Date with the family' level or anything but solid. the hired shorts I just find kind of dull and only saved cause of Hired! The Musical from the previous episode.

Probably the issue is they aren't going to get their own studio that will be providing everything unless they know its going to be their permanent home and going about it was a going to be no-go during COVID, especially with restrictions having everyone work remote anyway. They probably can't go about narrowing down a location until they see how they are going to operate normally with the Gizmoplex.

I think we can maybe have a good short without needing to run it down quite this much. Pipeline doesn't have to be Hired!, an all-time classic, to be pretty funny and I think it was.
And yes, the supermarket short from Turkey Day was very good.

The Musical from the previous episode. It isn't whether you like or dislike it, we all have different tastes... it was the expression of surprise that was silly. I mean, surprise that I like a respected, fan favorite short - come on, seriously? I think we can maybe have a good short without needing to run it down quite this much. Pipeline doesn't have to be Hired!, an all-time classic, to be pretty funny and I think it was. I wasn't running it down, I said it was fine, it was okay. I'm not going to pretend it was anything more than that.

I liked the Supermarket short with Joel, Josh, and Bill, but the version shown on Turkey Day with the new cast was terrible. I haven't seen the Pipeline short yet, but I'm hoping the humor there is more comparable to the new Joel shorts than the MST3K Live one. The writers are very capable of writing good riffs. It's just kind of a gamble as to whether or not they'll actually do it.
And yeah, I agree. It's hard to top a classic short like Hired!, especially part 2. All I'm hoping is that the new shorts will scratch a similar itch the classic ones do. They don't need to meet some crazy high standards. I just want them to be funny.

a new edit is up at the Gizmoplex (showing in the bunkers at the virtual theater), it removes the pre-show stuff, brings it down to an even 3 hrs. The synch issues I had during the livestream (host segs, mostly at the start of the stream) are fixed, but not the sound, the darn movie, or here, short, is still too quiet. Likely another cut is coming when it officially opens in May.
